Oppo N1 Mini revealed in leaked images with rotating camera, multiple color options

Posted: 28 May 2014 08:51 AM PDT

Just a couple of weeks after HTC took the wraps off of the One mini 2, a leak has revealed that we'll soon have another new shrunken smartphone on our hands.

Sina Weibo user C Technology has posted several images of a device referred to as the Oppo N1 Mini. The regular N1 launched back in December 2013 with a 5.9-inch display and rotating 13-megapixel camera. To compare, this N1 Mini is said to feature a 5-inch screen and a rotating shooter. Also said to be included is 4G connectivity.

The Oppo N1 is a fairly sizable device, so it's nice to see that Oppo may be prepping a mini version for folks that like the N1's design but aren't feeling its size. Most of the N1 Mini's specs are still a mystery, so it's not known if it'll feature higher-end specs or if it'll be more of a mid-range phone like most other mini handsets. However, the good news is that with a debut slated for May 30, it won't be much longer before all is revealed.

How to install Android apps from the Google Play website

Posted: 28 May 2014 08:49 AM PDT

Installing Android apps to your phone or tablet from any computer with a web browser

Google is one of the biggest web service companies around. Their cloud-based apps and services can do some pretty wild and wonderful things, and we're about to look at one of them -- installing apps to your Android device remotely through the Google Play website.

All the complicated issues, like making sure apps are compatible and available for you, or keeping track of which device(s) you're currently using are done by Google behind-the-scenes, leaving us with just a few clicks needed to make some serious magic happen. All you need is an Android device registered with Google Play, and a computer with a modern web browser.

There's a complete video walkthrough of the process after the break, but we'll spend a few minutes and talk about it as well. This is the way I install almost all my apps, because I only have to find them once and can install them to any device I may have in service. It goes a little something like this.

Sony announces official wireless charging solution for Xperia Z2

Posted: 28 May 2014 08:17 AM PDT

If you're an Xperia Z2 owner that's been impatiently waiting for the rumored Z2 wireless charging kit, you'll be happy to know that Sony has now made it official. Sony's wireless charging solution is based on the QI charging standard and consists of two different components: the WCR12 Wireless Charging Cover and the WCH10 Wireless Charging Plate.

Sony's new cover not only works with wireless charging, it also covers both the front and back of the Xperia Z2 and can even work as a kickstand. The case weighs in at 66 grams and packs the dimensions of 149 x 78 x 14mm. The stand is available in black or white.

While the Xperia Z2 charging cover should work with any QI-certified charger, if you want to keep to official accessories, the WCH10 charging plate gives you a stylish circular solution with a black top and metal sides. The plate is capable of producing 5W of power and 1A output. If you have other QI-compatible devices they should also work nicely with the WCH10 charging plate.

So how much do these official accessories set you back? That's a good question, but one Sony has yet to answer. Sony has yet to set pricing or release date in stone, though the accessories should roll out sometime this summer.

What do you think of the Xperia Z2 WCR12 cover and WCH10 charging plate? How much would you be willing to pay for each?

New Broadcom chip to finally bridge the gap between wireless charging standards

Posted: 28 May 2014 08:12 AM PDT

Broadcom has announced a new wireless charging chip that aims to simplify wireless charging by combining all three current standards onto a single chip. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), and the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP - of which Broadcom is a member) all have their own standards, though the PMA and A4WP have recently agreed to merge.

While the WPC's Qi standard has found its way into many products, it faces some challenges. For instance, though Nokia includes Qi charging in its phones, models bound for AT&T in the U.S. use the PMA standard, thanks to the carrier's partnership with the Alliance. This is set to change with Broadcom's new chip.

Samsung Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit review

Posted: 28 May 2014 07:25 AM PDT

Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear Fit

The Samsung Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit are the next-generation wearables from Samsung, following up on the popular Galaxy Gear smartwatch. There are three new devices, but we really can break them down into two categories, all with the same things going on deep inside. The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are really the same watch, only the Neo has no camera — and it costs $100 less than the Gear 2. The Gear Fit does mostly the same stuff as the other two, only it lacks a few of the advanced features, has a different form factor, and it's the same price as the Gear 2 Neo. Lost yet?
