Android Weekly: top 6 stories this week

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 11:17 PM PDT

This week in your world of Android: Android 4.4.4 took us by surprise, ART replaced Dalvik in AOSP, Google released updates to several of its core apps, the Galaxy S5 LTE-A launched in South Korea, Amazon finally unveiled its smartphone, reports emerged about Google's Android in the car plans, and hacker Geohot released a widely effective root method.

These are the essential stories, the summary of an entire week in just a few words. It's Android Weekly.

Hello, Android 4.4.4

Not all Nexus devices out there received their dose of Android 4.4.3 when Google kicked off a new update on Thursday. Android 4.4.4 brings mostly security patches, including the major SSL issue that reportedly prevent the on-time shipping of the OnePlus One.

"Dalvik is dead, long live Dalvik"

That's how a Google employee prefaced the commit to the master branch of AOSP that removes Dalvik and replaces it with the shiny new ART. The new Android runtime will bring faster load times and better battery life, but some apps and the Xposed framework could suffer from compatibility issues.

Update Wednesday

This week's Update Wednesday was quite eventful, bringing updates to Google search, Waze, Drive and more, as well as the release of the stock Email app in the Play Store.

The S5 Prime is real, so why are we so disappointed?

The long rumored Galaxy S5 Prime turned out to be the LTE-A version of the device, launched this week as a South Korean exclusive. Some people declared themselves disappointed they didn't get Prime specs on the regular S5, but Samsung probably didn't have any choice in the first place.

The Fire phone is here

Amazon this week unleashed a firestorm of questionable puns when it finally launched the Fire Phone, its first smartphone. The device comes with 3D effects and a built-in tool for identifying and ordering products off Amazon, but the stingy price and AT&T exclusivity may put off a lot of customers.

No Nexus 6 from LG

Google Nexus 5 black aa 2

LG did a great job with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, so fans will be disappointed to find that LG won't be making the next Nexus, as confirmed by LG's communications director. Okay, how about a Silver device then?

Auto Link OS

audi infotainment

Remember the Open Automotive Alliance? Apparently, the first result of the initiative is Auto Link, a technology that will allow drivers to control their Android devices with the car's controls. Expect it next week at Google I/O.

Towelroot all the things

When Geohot hacks something, he does it in style (see iPhone and PS3). Geohot's latest achievement is a widely effective root method called Towelroot, that works with many previously unrootable devices, such as AT&T and Verizon's Galaxy S5 and Note 3.

Alleged LG G Vista for Verizon promotional image leaks, looks oddly similar to the G3

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 07:21 PM PDT

This makes things interesting, but mainly confusing. Provided to @evleaks, the image above shows an LG device that looks just like the G3. But, clearly, this promotional image is not for the G3. This is for the recently-leaked G Vista. Everything looks identical to the G3 aside from the text. So what could the G Vista be? Perhaps a G3 Mini, but the sizing and everything else looks unchanged. Or could it be that Verizon is wildly altering the name of its G3 to the G Vista? Yeah, that sounds a bit crazy.

What do you think the LG G Vista is? Let us know in the comments.

Nexus tablet Volantis manufactured by HTC leaks: 8.9-inch display, NVIDIA Tegra K1, and more

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 06:51 PM PDT

Waiting for the Nexus 8? So are we. But the next tablet from Google could actually be called the Nexus 9. The alleged device has leaked, a tablet with an 8.9-inch display that has a 2048×1440 resolution. The aspect ratio for such would be 4:3. It is believed to be manufactured by HTC and therefore an aluminum zero-gap construction would be obvious. The leak does claim that stereo front-facing speakers will be present, but the device in the image does not appear to have them. This could merely be a placeholder image.

Hit the break for additional information.

The specifications of this device, going by Volantis and Flounder right now, is where things get very interesting. The processor inside is apparently the Tegra K1, a 64-bit chip that is codenamed Logan. Along with this is 2GB of RAM. And the device's internal storage options are 16GB of 32GB. On the front is a 3MP camera but that back one is 8MP with optical image stabilization.

For specifications that are this good, Google likely will not be going light with pricing as they have done with other Nexus devices. Android Police, who obtained all of this information, points out that the 16GB version would retail for $399 and 32GB for $499. A variant with an LTE connection would cost anywhere around $600. These are preliminary prices, though. The same source claims that Volantis will have many more accessories compared to previous Nexus devices. One of which is a keyboard case.

Volantis is not expected to arrive at Google I/O on Wednesday. Instead, a release this fall or near the end of 2014 is likely.
