Apps of the Week: Swarm, ASPCA, Gogobot Travel and more!

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 02:53 PM PDT

Another great week of Android has come and gone, and that means it's time for Saturday's Apps of the Week column. We've rallied together the folks here at Android Central to each submit an app of their choosing that has been on their device this week, and give a quick explanation as to why they're recommending it. We always get a diverse set of apps in here, and this week is no exception.

You'll find everything from utilities to media apps to games and of course the occasional random pick-up we found. Read along with us and see how this week's apps line up.

A look at the Logitech Type-S Bluetooth Keyboard case for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 02:40 PM PDT

For many of us (myself included) for a good tablet to be more than just a content consumption device, an equally good keyboard is mandatory. With the release of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S — especially the larger 10-inch version — we see a tablet that can do just about anything we throw at it, and do it well. It's a perfect content consumption device out-of-the-box. But like any touchscreen device, actually working on the thing leaves a lot to be desired.

The addition of the Logitech Type-S Bluetooth Keyboard case makes all the difference, and turns your Tab S into a little workhorse.

Photoshop

Adobe knows that the world is evolving to be mobile-centric, so it order to adapt, it'll have to continue heavily supporting its mobile applications.

As a result, the company has updated Photoshop Express on both Android and iOS to add blemish removal and defogging tools. Most importantly, perhaps, is the added ability to import RAW files for editing. You can do all of this for free — just head to the link after the break to download the app from the Play Store.

HTC Dot View case seemingly heading to additional devices

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 01:03 PM PDT

htc_dot_view_case_compatible_devices_leak

The Dot View case, which received an intriguing app update yesterday, is currently limited to just the HTC One (M8). The company does not have a Dot View case for any of its other devices. However, that is likely to change. HTC, according to @evleaks, is working on a Dot View case for at least seven other devices.

There will be different levels, though. What the difference between each will be is not yet known, but it likely means HTC will water down the case. The 'Dot View Premium' case that is currently featured for the company's flagship will also be heading to smartphones with the model number's M8 Ace (One E8), B2 (alleged Butterfly successor), W8 (alleged Verizon Windows Phone), and EYE (alleged selfie handset for AT&T). The 'Dot View Standard' case is going to be paired with A51. And the 'Dot View Lite' will go with A21 and A11.

Augmented SmartWatch Pro now supports Android Wear

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 12:34 PM PDT

augmented_smartwatch_pro_app_icon

Augmented SmartWatch Pro has been around for a bit of time supporting devices like the Sony SmartWatches, Pebble, and a few others. It adds a hands-free notification aspect to each device it supports. With the 7.3.1 update, Augmented SmartWatch Pro now supports Android Wear devices.

To get the app setup with your Android Wear device, make sure to enable the Android Wear settings. It should already be enabled by default. Then make sure the app has access to notifications within your device's security settings. Turn off notifications from other apps and choose which apps can push notifications to your device. Even though Android Wear already seems pretty good at handling notifications, this could be an option for people in need of a hands-free solution.

Fish Out Of Water! 1.2.1 APK

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 04:57 AM PDT

Finally a halfbrick game that was on the iPad, iPhone and ipod and now it comes to android. Fish Out Of Water is an insanely addictive game from the team behind Jetpack Joyride. This game is so addicting, and it's so perfect for those moments when you're bored or just waiting around and need something to do. It's simple yet intriguing and makes you want to keep playing.

Fish Out Of Water is the story of six feisty fish longing to soar above the ocean. To help them get airborne, simply throw your fish of choice right out of the water and watch as it flies through the clouds and skips merrily along the waves! Battle the elements and choose your throw wisely as the weather changes every few minutes. Expect the unexpected with crazy tsunamis, icebergs and even an immense jellyfish swarm!

In the game, you began as a dead-simple game in which you flicked your finger left-to-right to skip a rock across the water. The game is very cute and creative, especially the little fishes. That the core mechanic was as addicting as Fruit Ninja's slice or Jetpack Joyride's fly-and-shoot, Halfbrick's developers and designers set about creating a world around it that's much more complex than skipping rocks.

Requires Android: 4.0.3+

Wunderlist gets updated with Android Wear support

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 08:34 PM PDT

Wunderlist

Wunderlist is the latest app to join the Android Wear party, baking in support for Google's wearable tech in the latest app update. The update will let you check any notifications and reminders from your watch, as well as create a list by saying "Ok Google, make a note." You can also use voice dictation to reply to comments on any notes.

It's too early to tell if Android Wear will take over the wearable market, but it's safe to say that it's getting off to a great start by getting so many apps and developers on board.

Google Camera gets another update with Photo Sphere improvements

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 08:19 PM PDT

Google_Camera_Large_Icon

Google released an update to the Google Camera on the Play Store just a few days ago that brought some Android Wear functionality. Today's update isn't quite as big, but it does fix a lot of issues that users had with Photo Sphere and related modes.

Photo Sphere has been improved so it has a larger target area, which is extremely helpful in bright sunlight. This change should make creating Photo Spheres much, much easier. Aside from that small tweak, Photo Spheres should use less memory during the stitching process, which will supposedly cut down on crashes in the camera app. That performance change should also affect related camera modes, including Fish Eye, Panorama, and Wide Angle.

Nova Launcher gets Android L-style visual tweaks

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 08:19 PM PDT

nova_launcher

Nova Launcher is one of the best third-party launchers available, and today's update makes it even better. The latest stable update brings some visual flair from the Android L developer preview, including different animations and theme tweaks.

There's a new animation option for opening and leaving apps called slide up, which causes apps to appear from the bottom of the screen like they do in Android L. Many of the default theme elements have adopted the same aesthetic, including the Google search bar and the app drawer icon. The folder icon previews can now use Android L style grouping, too.

It's not a major update, but if you like the visuals of Android L, you're going to want to check out this update. Hit the break below for the link.

g Android Wear does a lot of things well right now, but launching apps by touch is not one of them. If you don't want to shout at your wrist, you have to scroll way to the bottom of the options list to see your installed mini-apps like Keep, Evernote, and IFTTT. Wear Mini Launcher makes it much, much easier by showing all your apps with a quick edge gesture.

Pick up a hot date straight from your wrist with Tinder, now available on Android Wear

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 06:04 PM PDT

Tinder Android Wear large IMG_1541

We've told you guys about the dating friending app Tinder a few times in recent months. After first launching on Android almost a year ago to this date, the app is now finally ready to venture into the brave new world of wearables. In a recent update, it appears Tinder added support for Android Wear devices like the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live, allowing users to simply launch the app by speaking the "Start Tinder" command.

From there, swiping left will reject a user, while right will give them the green light for further communications. Tapping a photo will pull up a quick bio, while long pressing allows you to quickly exit the app. Overall the app behaved well, except that launch times are fairly slow, made worse by the fact that the app closes out every time the screen dims (LG G Watch).

You guys may remember Tinder's recent attempt at rebranding their business as a friend discovery tool, something you can be sure to tell your SO should they catch you perusing rating women based solely on their looks. If you have an Android Wear device, Tinder on your wrist could be exactly what the doctor ordered. Check it out for free on Google Play.

You can now use Tinder on your Android Wear device

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 05:29 PM PDT

tinder-android-wear

Because using Tinder on your smartphone simply wasn't addictive enough, the developer has gone ahead and made it compatible with Google's new Android Wear platform. Users can now use tinder straight from their smartwatch, without the need to even pull out their phones from their pockets.

For those who are not in the loop about Tinder, it is a dating app that allows you to easily connect with men or women of your preference. The app presents you with what seems like an unending stream of images.

You can "like" or "not like" a person, or go into their profile if you wish to learn more. If two people happen to like each other, a connection is made and you can chat away! It's that simple and can become quite addicting.

The Android Wear feature supports images and parts of the users' profiles. You can also get notifications for your Tinder matches. Then it will be as easy as always to continue the conversation from your smartphone.

Those who want to try the new Android Wear-compatible Tinder app can go ahead and download it from the Google Play Store. After you download or update the app, you can simply give your Android Wear device the command "OK, Google: start Tinder", and you can Tinder away.

First images of the Sony Xperia Z3 leak – are they real?

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 04:44 PM PDT

Sony Xperia T2 Ultra-31

Rumors of the Sony Xperia Z3 have been spreading, with the latest coming from Vodafone Germany. The device's appearance has not been unveiled until today, though, making this leak a little special. Today we bring you a set of images said to have the Xperia Z3 as the subject.

While previous rumors made us expect the design to be different, we don't see many changes in the design language here. Sony is known for its classic aesthetics, which is something their fans often praise. Aside from its looks, the prototype unit does seem to be quite a capable device so far.

This would be the Chinese version with model number L55t, which makes sense knowing the Xperia Z2 is labeled as the L50t. Check out the gallery below to see the device in more detail. The pictures are not half bad, but we could always use better quality.

Xperia-Z3-leak_1 Xperia-Z3-leak_3 Xperia-Z3-leak_2 Xperia-Z3_5 Xperia-Z3_4

Most specs continue to be a mystery, but from the photos we can tell it is running Android 4.4.4 on firmware build 23.0.G.0.98. It also seems like the device will have a 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, Adreno 330 graphics and probably the same 20.7MP Exmor RS lens we have seen from both predecessors.

It's also important to note this is still a prototype, so design, specs and other aspects could still be subject to change. Of course, it may a bit early to be losing sleep over the Xperia Z3. After all, the Sony Xperia Z2 is an amazing smartphone and has yet to reach many markets.

Not to mention, this are still rumors and we wouldn't hold our breath on them just yet. We will definitely give you the details as soon as they become available, so stay tuned!

HTC One M8′s Dot View app gets a huge update, introduces custom wallpapers and more

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 04:19 PM PDT

HTC Dot View app update

HTC's Dot View case is arguably the best thing to happen to device protection in a very long time. Not because the Dot View case offers the best protection, or even uses premium materials — it's because it's damn cool to look at. Straight up.

Today, HTC's Dot View app is getting an update on Google Play and it looks to finally add many features/requests lacking in the previous build. Namely, there's an actual interface giving users the ability to choose from various hand picked wallpapers tailored to the Dot View's 8-bit like Creative Matrix Display. Should you have a wallpaper of your own you'd like to try out, you can even select one of your vary own, just keep in mind it might not look as cool.

Aside from customization options, the app is getting some new functionality as well. HTC added the ability to redial the 3 most recent calls, and new notifications can be found, viewable by swiping left or right with the Dot View case closed.

One of the smarter moves HTC made lately was unbundling a few of their system apps and making them updatable through the Google Play Store. Typically, users have to wait for manufacturers to push out an entire system update before getting nifty little features like camera tweaks or what have you. A trend started by Motorola with the Moto X, we have to say we like this method a lot better.

You can grab the Dot View update right now in the Play Store, or if this has finally convinced any of you to pick up the Dot View case, they can be found on Amazon for around $27 here .
