Crowd funding sites like Indiegogo have spurred a tons of mobile-focused innovation, and the latest huge campaign looking for more contributors is called GOkey. The basic idea behind GOkey is being a bit of an all-in-one smartphone tool — a large key-sized device that is a battery, a charging and data sync cable, a device locator and a file storage device all in one. It's a pretty neat idea, and it's pulled in nearly $1 million after looking for just $40,000 to start.

Android L Developer Preview walkthrough

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 02:50 PM PDT

For the first time, Google released a new version of Android as a developer preview. Android L (or whatever they will call it) probably won't get a final release until October, but if you own a Nexus 5 or a Nexus 7 (2013), you can give it a try now. As I am sure you have read elsewhere, it's pretty buggy. The biggest problem is that so many apps won't work with it so my advice is to stay away for now. Still, I know there are a lot of you that can't handle not having the latest and greatest, so go for it if you insist.

Since the preview is only available to a couple of devices, the majority of you won't be able to actually test it out so we put together this walkthrough showing you many of the new features. There's still a lot more to come, but for now, you can check out Material Design as part of the new Dialer app, settings, battery saver, ripple effects, the lock screen notifications, Heads Up, the recent apps UI, and more. Hit the break for our hands on.

Protip: Want Ok Google everywhere on your Android device? Try searching it

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 02:34 PM PDT

Ok Google everywhere

Click to play GIF

There's a good chance that, by now, most of you have received the Google Search app's new ability to enable the "Ok Google" hotword detection everywhere on your Android device, even while it's sleeping (as long as it's charging). It's a super useful feature and one that, up until now, only the Motorola Moto X was able to pull off (although, the X still has the benefit of always listening, even when not charging.

Because not everyone has received this new feature in their Google Search apps (something to do with a per-account basis), we though this latest tip might come in use for some of you. Apparently, a user on Reddit discovered the craziest trick to get the system-wide "Ok Google everywhere" up and running on his device: simply search for that term in Google Search.

While we haven't been able to confirm if the trick works (all our devices received the functionality earlier this week), we've seen reports from Android users reporting success. Again, it's not full proof, just one more hoop you can jump through if you want this new killer feature on your Android before the 4th of July weekend. Good luck!

The LG G3 is slowly rolling out to markets across the globe, with the USA being of high priority. The device is now available for pre-order from T-Mobile, but Sprint is not staying far behind. The Now network is ready to bring the mighty G3 to market.

Sprint is announcing the LG G3 will be available starting July 18th, in black and gold colors. You can pre-order the device starting July 11th. While the price is not directly specified yet, customers can get it with a $0 down payment and $25 monthly payments for two years. You will also love the reward early birds are getting.

$150 reward cards are available for those who purchase the device between July 11 and July 24. Meanwhile, those who get it between July 24 and August 14 will only enjoy a $100 reward card. Not a bad deal if you ask us! That is possibly near a fourth of the smartphone's retail price!

The LG G3 is one hell of a smartphone, and we can be sure it will not let you down. This version happens to support Sprint's Spark network, but everything else should come pretty standard.

Don’t expect a version of CyangenMod based on the Android L Developer Preview

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 11:52 AM PDT

Now that the Android L Developer Preview has hit AOSP, a lot of people are thinking ROMs. If you're thinking that CyanogenMod 12 will be out soon, think again. The "L" is for "Later" as they see it, and I agree 100%. It's a wonderful thing that Google released a preview version of L for us to play with and for developers to get accustomed to, but it makes no sense for a team like Cyanogen to spend much time with something that is full of bugs.

So expect CM 11 M8 (Android 4.4.4) to be released right after the 4th of July weekend, and their main focus will continue to be CM11 until Android L becomes a final release.

Samsung pokes fun at iPhone owners again with new ‘Wall Huggers’ commercial

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 11:35 AM PDT

Samsung is back at it again. They just released another commercial making jabs at iPhone owners, this time regarding the battery. "Wall Huggers" refers to those that have to spend their time at their airport close to a wall outlet in order to charge their phone, or shall I say iPhone. It's not that Samsung is saying their phone will last longer, it's more that they offer two things that iPhones don't offer. The first is the ability to swap out the battery, and the second is Ultra Power Saving Mode. The latter will allow your phone to last a long time, but at the expense of not doing much else on your phone other than texting and phone calls.

It's yet another effective and funny commercial, but I doubt there will be too many iPhone owners that will run out tomorrow to buy a Galaxy S 5. Hit the break for the 60 second spot.

Samsung is back to poking fun at iPhone users in new ‘Wall Huggers’ commercial [VIDEO]

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 10:35 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S5 battery life ad

It's been awhile since we seen Samsung take a jab at iPhone users. Samsung's original smear campaign began with the Korean manufacturer's first "Next Big Thing" ad spots, targeting blind consumers waiting in line for another incremental release of the new iPhone. Backed by a huge multimillion dollar budget, the ads were everywhere and seemingly effective too. Despite playing it safe in terms of design and build materials, we watched as Samsung further dominated the smartphone market with their onslaught of Galaxy devices.

Today, Samsung is back and right where we like them: poking fun at iPhone users in their latest video, "Wall Huggers." That's what Samsung is calling all those sad little iPhone users desperately clinging to their wall sockets, looking for any available current to charge their depleting iPhones. Samsung goes on to show off their Ultra Power saving mode and the fact that, unlike many phones on their market, their Galaxy line features removable batteries for quickly swapping out with a spare. While the same fate could befall even Android users it's only in recent flagships we've seen OEMs get serious about battery life.

Yet another feather in Samsung's cap, the ad effectively showcases one area in which the Samsung Galaxy S5 excels above all others. Even though the Galaxy S5 is far from perfect, battery life is a huge selling point as more consumers begin relying on smartphones for all their computing needs. Gotta give it to Samsung, they sure know how to drive a point home. Check out their latest video below.

Official: Sprint LG G3 launches July 18th; pre-sales begin July 11th

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 09:49 AM PDT

Sprint customers wondering when they'll finally be invited to the LG G3 party will love today's news. The Now Network has announced July 18th availability for LG's 2014 flagship, meaning there are only a short couple of weeks before you're able to walk away with one for $0 down and $25 per month for 24 months (if you're "well-qualified," of course).

Don't want to wait that long to secure an order? Pre-sales will begin July 11th. You'll also be entitled to some rewards cards if you happen to buy your device through official Sprint channels, including their retail stores, website or over the phone within a few weeks' time:

  • $150 Reward Card – purchase July 11 through July 24 and register by Aug. 7

  • $100 Reward Card – purchase July 25 through Aug. 14 and register by Aug. 28

Sprint's version of the LG G3 is equipped with their Sprint Spark LTE radios to give you access to the company's faster and more reliable data network, though it should be pretty much the same as the phone we reviewed not long ago. Highlights of the LG G3 include a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 display, Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel OIS camera with laser-assisted autofocus and more. Let us know if you'll be picking one of these up when they finally land.

ASUS has high hopes for their upcoming smartwatch

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 08:49 AM PDT

It's no secret that ASUS has a smartwatch in development, as we've heard several promising rumors about the device. ASUS chairman really believes the smartwatch will be great, too, judging from his comments about it earlier today.

Chairman Jonney Shih discussed the trade offs that have to be made in a smartwatch, including form factor, size, and price and how focusing on different aspects of a device can make or break its success. He says the ASUS design team has learned a lot about smartwatches in their design process, and if the early rumors about how thin and affordable the device is pan out, there's a good chance ASUS will have a hit product on their hands.

Shih also said that key features of the device, including voice recognition and being able to solve user problems, will be vital in making the smartwatch a "hero product." Unfortunately, he didn't have anything to say about the release date of the device, but it sounds like the smartwatch is fairly close to being done, so maybe we won't have to wait much longer.

The Red Cross Hurricane app is our go-to storm tracker this season

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 08:43 AM PDT

Plus more tips and tricks for using your phones during severe weather

We've got our first hurricane of the year — Arthur — and he's starting to make his way up the eastern seaboard. That means it's the perfect time to talk a bit, as we do every year, about how your smartphone can help out with the summer scourge.

This year, I'm using the Red Cross Hurricane app as my go-to tracker. There are a bunch of hurricane apps available in Google Play, but most of them just repurpose data from the National Hurricane Center. There's nothing wrong with that, but I can visit the NHC site for free. For those new to tropical weather, the Red Cross app also has a wealth of preparedness information, including what to do before, during and after a storm, traditional tracking maps, and shelter information. It's basically a one-stop app for severe storm information.

In addition to that app recommendation, let's also take a look at a few ways your smartphone can help you during a storm.
