Posted: 05 Jul 2014 12:22 PM PDT

Those of us here in the states have been enjoying our fair share of barbecue food, tasty beverages and fireworks, but that doesn't mean we didn't have time to put together our Apps of the Week column this fine Saturday afternoon. There's nothing particularly patriotic about this week's picks, though — we've just continued our weekly showcase of apps that the writers here at Android Central are currently using.

This week features a new way to listen to podcasts, a weather app, a calendar replacement and a few other great picks. Read along and see the apps we picked this week — you may just find a few that meet your needs.

Prototype of a Nexus 8 tablet passes through Indian shipping site

Posted: 05 Jul 2014 11:29 AM PDT

nexus_8_prototype_zauba

We know that Google is likely to launch a Nexus tablet this fall alongside the release of Android L. The sizing for Volantis' display is allegedly 8.9 inches, which would put into question whether or not it would be titled Nexus 8 or Nexus 9. A new entry in the Indian shipping site Zauba may have tipped off what the name will be. On June 30, a "NEXUS8 PROTOTYPE" appeared, claiming it is similar to the Nexus 7.

A Nexus 8 tablet has been rumored for a very long time, and this prototype does not confirm anything. Being that it is indeed a prototype, Google may have scrapped this specific device and is now focusing on something else. Either way, we are expecting a new Nexus device this fall considering the program is not dead.

How to turn on the LG G Watch

Posted: 05 Jul 2014 10:27 AM PDT

With no obvious power button, switching the G Watch back on can be a little tricky

The LG G Watch is designed to be an always-on device, whether it's on your wrist or resting on its charging cradle. But sometimes, for whatever reason, you might need to switch it off completely. Maybe you're traveling somewhere without Internet connectivity, or you're using a different watch and want to save the device's power. Switching the G Watch off is easy enough, but turning it back on again is a bit of a head-scratcher. With no buttons on the front or side of the smartwatch, it's not exactly obvious how you're supposed to return it to life.

Fortunately we've got everything you need to know down below.

Custom watch faces are heading to Android Wear

Posted: 05 Jul 2014 09:28 AM PDT

Google has launched Android Wear with a decent supply of watch faces on the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live, but like all things Android half the fun is customizing the experience to make it your own. While some developers are readying existing apps to support Android Wear in various ways, custom watch faces have proven on other smartwatch platforms to be a big part of the ecosystem. One of the first to hit the Google Play Store is hands down the most obvious for scoring geek cred through your wrist computer, and it paints a clear picture for what we can expect moving forward.

Weekend Project: Make (or buy) your own Google cardboard VR headset

Posted: 05 Jul 2014 08:13 AM PDT

Missing Google I/O doesn't mean you miss out on all the fun

One of the developer gifts handed out at Google I/O was – initially, at least – a perplexing piece of cardboard. What it actually turned out to be was a do-it-yourself virtual reality (VR) headset that could be used to interact with an Android smartphone. The good news for everyone who didn't go to I/O is that you, too, can join in the fun and games by making (or buying, if you're less handy) your very own.

OnePlus One To Get Android L Within Three Months Of Release

Posted: 04 Jul 2014 10:35 PM PDT

OnePlus One

The OnePlus One is getting delayed yet again, due to a mixture of production issues and overwhelming demand, but that won't stop them from updating to the latest Android release in the fall.

The Android L Preview Release brings significant improvements to the platform, which may or may not conflict with the current build of CyanogenMod 11S (based off of Android 4.4.2) on the phone.

CyanogenMod themselves have stated they will not incorporate any L features until the stable release so it's uplifting to see that they are promising an ETA, similar to HTC's announcement last week.

Well, we're keen to announce today that the OnePlus One will indeed be getting the L treatment. When, you ask? That depends on Google. We promise to have it done within three months of their releasing a final build.

Now if only they could only start shipping the phones to the general public…

LG G3 to hit Canada August 1st

Posted: 04 Jul 2014 06:19 PM PDT

lg g3 aa (3 of 22)

The LG G3 has been making its way across the world, and we have just found out Canada's turn is coming up. LG Canada has announced the highly-anticipated device will become available for our neighbors starting August 1st, which is not long after the expected USA release.

LG is bringing Canadians plenty of options by releasing the device through all major carriers and retailers. Rogers, Bell, MTS, SaskTel and Videotron are in the list of networks that will offer the high-end smartphone. In addition, customers will be able to get the device from Tbooth, The Source, Wireless Wave, Wireless Etc and Wow.

LG G3 Global Launch June 27

LG will continue launching the device across all possible markets, so be sure to stay tuned to see which countries will be blessed by the G3 next. We know the device is arriving the USA later this month. T-Mobile and Sprint have already announced availability, but Verizon and AT&T should be joining soon.

Signing up for these high end devices comes with a high price… literally. We know it's no easy decision, but you can always check back to our LG G3 review to see how well the device fared in our tests. (Spoiler: it did very well). You can also check out our Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G3 comparison, which will be helpful for those who can't decide between these two popular devices.

OnePlus promises to update to Android L within 3 months of its release

Posted: 04 Jul 2014 05:05 PM PDT

android l release apis

Android L is all the hype right now, and rightfully so. It is the biggest update Android has seen, which also means it won't be as easy to update current devices. Manufacturers really seem to be making an extra effort to bring timely updates, and OnePlus is definitely not staying behind.

The Chinese manufacturer has announced they will have Android L in their devices within three months after its official release. This is much like what HTC is promising, which means the Android L proliferation through these devices depends much on when Google decides to release the new software.

Timely updates are to be expected from OnePlus, especially considering the device is running CyanogenMod. The Cyanogen team is known for being great with Android updates. With this update we will see the introduction of great improvements, including the new Material Design, a plethora of small (yet awesome) updates, battery improvements and more.

oneplus one aa (33 of 34)

Those who consider themselves the adventurous kind can go ahead and download the Android L preview right now. It can get a bit tricky if you are not very literate in Android tinkering, though. If you are not comfortable with manually flashing software you can also check out our first look article and video on Android L.

To Android users, this is really the golden test. You can beat the competition with stunning specs and an amazing price, but it's support and timely updates that will really keep the tech community on your side. Let's hope OnePlus stays on top of its game.

Group photo of LG G3 models leaks, Verizon unsurprisingly makes noticeable changes

Posted: 04 Jul 2014 03:34 PM PDT

lg_g3_all_carriers_leak

Which one of these devices is not like the others? The Verizon model, of course. You are looking at the different carrier models for the upcoming LG G3. While each has implemented carrier branding here and there, Verizon has gone ahead and revamped LG's 2014 flagship. The color is noticeably darker and the rear button setup has been altered to resemble what was done with last year's G2 with chrome trims. On the front, too, Big Red has made changes. The chin of the G3 is now black rather than matching the design of the back panel.

Is Verizon's branding and changes holding you back from purchasing the LG G3? Or are you on another carrier and intend on jumping on this device?
