This week's sidebar poll: Do you own a quick-charging phone?

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 03:39 PM PST

It has many names: turbo, rapid, quick and fast.

Whatever the name may be, there are a plethora of phones out there that support Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 standard (or a manufacturers own version of it) since it was first announced back in 2013. And while we're doing our series on quick-charging and the phones and chargers that support it, we'd like to see how many of our readers have these phones that can rebound in a hurry when the need arises. Quick charging phones can be wonderful when you're short on time and juice, and while not all quick-charging chargers are alike in shape they all adhere to the same standard.

DIY: Transform your LG G Watch R into a Watch Urbane using a little sandpaper

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 03:34 PM PST

LG G Watch R Urbane conversion 2

After scoping out the recently announced LG Watch Urbane, some LG G Watch R owners may have been left with feelings of buyers remorse. With a smooth metallic finish, our own Quentyn Kennemer felt the watch was the best looking smartwatch to date. But did you know that underneath the LG G Watch R's matte black exterior was an Urbane just waiting to be revealed?

LG G Watch R Urbane conversion 1

After seeing images of the Urbane, one resourceful G Watch owner took matters into his own hands. A sheet of fine grit sandpaper and a little elbow grease later, this brilliant do-it-yourselfer managed to successfully convert his G Watch into the Urbane — well, for the most part.

The Urbane does have a less prominent ring without the dial around the watch's glass, as well as a slightly less chiseled exterior. But hey, this is damn close and we think it looks great.

What do you guys think? Anyone else thinking about doing something similar with their LG G Watch R?

IDC releases latest smartphone shipment numbers for China, Xiaomi leads the pack

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 03:23 PM PST

IDC has released the numbers for smartphone shipments by vendor for Q4 2014. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Xiaomi is on top with a 13.7 percent market share in the fourth quarter — up from 6.5 percent over the previous year. However, Xiaomi's gain is Samsung's loss, as the Korean manufacturer's year-over-year growth was down 49.9 percent while Xiaomi's grew by 150 percent.

HTC One (M8) for Verizon expected to receive Lollipop approval in two weeks

HTC_One_M8_Back_TA

A few weeks ago, Verizon shocked everyone when it became the first carrier in the United States to push Android 5.0 to the Galaxy S 5. Look back at Verizon's history in updating its devices and you will find that the updates are either extremely slow or nonexistent. So it is great to see some changes at Big Red. Now, many people with the HTC One (M8) on Verizon are waiting to receive Lollipop. HTC Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi, essentially the company's spokesperson for software updates, took to Twitter to provide some information.

Hit the break for more.

On Twitter, one owner of the 2014 HTC flagship expressed hope that his device would receive the update this week. Versi responded with good news and bad news. The bad news is that the update will not arrive this week. The good news, though, is that approval for the update is expected to be received in the first week of March.

There you have it, the HTC One (M8) on Verizon should receive Android 5.0 Lollipop within the next two or three weeks.

Google concerned with Xiaomi’s ability to compete with apps and services

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 03:03 PM PST

xiaomi

When it comes to apps and services competing with Google and Android, there is not very much. Even historically the same can be said as no hardware manufacturer of Android devices has successfully built a strong user base for its own apps and services. At one point, Samsung was viewed as a threat but nothing ever became truly dangerous for Google. Consumers with Samsung devices turned away from what Samsung put on the table and stuck with what Google has offered. Another company from Asia, however, may hold the key to disrupting Google's dominance in mobile software.

There are several concerned Google employees that are part of the Android team, according to The Information, due to the rise of Xiaomi. The Chinese company is expanding outside of China and into markets such as India. With the expansion comes more exposure for Xiaomi apps and services. In China, much of Google's software is either limited or blocked; therefore, Xiaomi already has an advantage in its home country. Getting ahead in places like India means that Xiaomi can push its own software before Google gets there and competes. The folks in Mountain View do have Android One, but that has yet to really gain momentum.

Comcast's Xfinity TV Go App Picks Up AMC, Showtime, The Weather Channel, And Several Other Networks

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 02:36 PM PST

XfinityTVGo-Thumb The Xfinity TV Go is Comcast's way of letting customers take some of the channels they're already paying for and stream them to an Android device. For something that doesn't cost extra—thankfully, considering the high price of cable—it's a nice perk. Comcast has recently brought the list of supported channels up to over 70 with the addition of AMC, BBC America, FOX Deportes, MOVIEPLEX, Showtime, Univision Deportes and The Weather Channel.

Google Play Store and parents: how to control what apps are listed

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 02:02 PM PST

Content filtering puts you in control of what you (or your kids) can see in Google Play.

Smartphones and tablets can be a great match for your kids. Open up Google Play, and you'll find there are plenty of educational apps and entertainment apps, and even clever applications that have managed to combine both at once. You'll find a lot of things you want to expose your young ones to, and they will be better for it.

You'll also notice that there are plenty of things in Google Play that you might not want your child to see. While Google doesn't allow things like hate speech or outright pornography in Google Play apps (see the content guidelines here), things like "fictional" violence or suggestive imagery, or apps that can share your location, are permitted. You need to be aware of these apps if you choose to keep your kids away from them.

ZRRO is an Android gaming console with a hover pad

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 02:02 PM PST

ZRRO is a new Android gaming console that breaks from the norm and uses a controller outfitted with a hover touch pad. Rather than using a traditional gaming controller, ZRRO uses a unique hover touch pad that the company claims is like using a touchscreen. The ZRRO Pad uses a patented combination of mutual and self capacitance technology, dubbed zTouch. This combination allows the ZRRO Pad to sense where fingers are above the display and whether or not you're actually pressing down or not. It also reportedly solves ghosting issues that would be expected.

The ZRRO BOX itself seems to be a decent Android gaming console. It's outfitted with a quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage plus a microSD slot that supports cards up to 32GB, two USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI port and video output up to 4K. The best part of the entire package is that it supports all of the Android apps and games out there, due to the unique touch experience that it offers.

ZRRO is an interesting concept that could either blow us all away or spectacularly flop like the Ouya. If you want to get in on the action, follow the source link to the Kickstarter page and pre-order for $149 as an early bird price or $199 full price.

Google Seems To Be Testing Some UI Tweaks For Google+ On Android

plus

From time to time, Google engages in A/B testing with its live products. Flipping switches from somewhere deep in its Mountain View HQ, Google will turn on new design tweaks or feature changes for small groups of users, and measure their impact on engagement. This is generally a helpful process for validating design decisions, and occasionally we catch them in the act and get a peek at what might be around the corner.

HTC confirms 'new HTC One' on March 1

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 01:23 PM PST

Not that there was any doubt, really, but HTC UK on Twitter has confirmed that we'll see "the new HTC One" on March 1.

That phone, of course, should be the HTC One M9. We've seen leaks and rumors in drips and drabs over the past few weeks, some suspect, some not quite as much. (But all very much unofficial.)

Only, the exciting part according to most folks has little to do with the two different phones being launched. Instead, it has been pointed out that these phones have Android 5.1 in the version number field of their settings panel. There are a few obvious questions that follow something like this.

As if we needed any further confirmation their new 2015 flagship will be in attendance for the show, HTC UK confirmed on Twitter earlier today that "the new HTC One" will be unveiled at their event in Barcelona. There. They said it. Get hyped.

HTC says Lollipop for the Verizon One M8 should arrive in early March

Posted: 17 Feb 2015 01:09 PM PST

HTC One M8 DSC06660

After watching as Verizon successfully pushed out Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy S5 early this month, HTC One M8 owners may be wondering what the status is on their software update. HTC revealed that because of buggy software, they would be missing their self-imposed 90-day deadline as part of their "HTC Advantage" promise. And although we saw a few carrier variants like the One M8 on T-Mobile receive Lollipop last week, this didn't bode well for customers on Verizon who's lengthy approval process typically means longer wait times.

Well, you may not have to wait too much longer. In a response to one user's inquiry on Twitter, HTC Product Manager Mo Versi revealed that Verizon already has the HTC One M8's Lollipop update in their labs, and that HTC is expecting the update to be approved in early March. No exact date was given and we're hoping Verizon doesn't run into any major bugs before then, but now you don't have to hit that "Check for software updates" button for a few more weeks.

When Chrome does not have access to an internet connection, a prehistoric dinosaur placed in a desert-like environment appears. And behind the message proclaiming the lack of an internet connection is a game. Press the space bar and Chrome transforms the static page into an endless running game in which the dinosaur is the playable character. Now, users can play that same mini-game by installing the new Dino Run – Dinosity game. It is an unofficial version of the mini-game for Android devices. Simple tap the display to jump over objects and tap twice to jump even higher. The game tracks high scores, too.
