Google Compare allows Californians to compare auto insurance, coming to more states soon

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 02:10 PM PST

In the market for new auto insurance? Live in California? Then you may want to check out the new option for Google Compare. The service allows California residents to compare auto insurance side by side. According to the announcement, Compare provides a seamless, intuitive experience for insurance carriers to connect with customers online, whether you're a local or national provider.

For customers, you'll be able to compare insurance on either your phone or computer in about five minutes. Carriers will be able to highlight what separates their company from the others and customers will be able to adjust deductibles, add or remove cars and see updated prices as such. Then customers will be able to purchase said insurance over the Internet or on the phone.

The service is set roll out to other states and Google Compare will add other features like ratings, reviews and local agent support. Google says that while Compare is based on a flexible cost-per-acquisition (CPA) model, payments do not influence ranking and eligibility.

Google starts showing auto insurance comparisons in search results

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 01:03 PM PST

At its core Google has always been about putting people in touch with information. It started with searching the web, and has since ballooned to many other things. The latest is a handy tool for comparing auto insurance. If you live in California you should start seeing comparison tools when searching for auto insurance. They've also made the tools accessible on a new website.

All you have to do is enter your zip code, car details, and some other information to get results. You'll see a list of quotes from a variety of insurance companies. From there you can head to the provider's website and finish your purchase. Right now the service is only available in California, but it will be rolling out to other states soon. With all the different commercials and ads from auto insurance companies it's nice to have a place to compare them all.

Google Search will now show you cocktail recipes when searching for them

google sarch drink recipes

Google wants their search engine to become a resource for nearly everything, from health information to song lyrics. And now they're adding another element we didn't think we'd need (but probably will appreciate): cocktail recipes.

So the next time you decide on the perfect drink you want to feature at a social gathering you can simply search "how to make a dark and stormy" on Google, and the quick recipe will be smack dab at the top of the page for you to take a look at.

We should note it's a very barebones implementation for a recipe, so specific measurements for different serving sizes, mixing instructions and more are absent. That still gives you plenty of reason to explore the other dozens of recipe sites that will show up in your search results. Have at it, and try not to have too many before you have to go back to work today!

HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6 retail prices leaked in contest rules

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:09 AM PST

HTC One M9 DSC08393

Samsung, HTC and the carriers likely won't be ready to announce pricing details for their latest smartphones until they're nearly ready to be sold, but a couple of early contests have given us an idea of their suggested retail costs ahead of time.

HTC's contest rules for the HTC One M9 reveals that the device's estimated retail value is $599.99. This is $50 less than what Best Buy was listing the device for ahead of its official unveiling, but Best Buy has been known to mark prices up in order to promote customers to buy on-contract or financing instead.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge DSC08445

T-Mobile's contest rules for the Samsung Galaxy S6 reveals similar information, with Sammy's latest handset said to cost $699.99 once it's made available.

It's important to remember that estimated retail values and minimum suggested retail prices are only baseline figures, and that actual price tags will most certainly vary from carrier to carrier and retailer to retailer. Still, it's nice to get an accurate idea of how much you'll need to save ahead of time in case you're planning to buy one of these things at full cost. Do these prices look fair to you?

HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6 retail pricing revealed

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 07:46 AM PST

One piece of information left out of the recent announcements of the upcoming flagships from HTC and Samsung was the price of the new hotness. Fortunately, thanks to contests from HTC and T-Mobile, we now have an answer for both.

The HTC One M9 will retail for $599, which is precisely what you would expect given that the One M8 retailed for the same price in most locations last year. Obviously on contract you should expect to shell out the standard $199.

The Samsung Galaxy S6, on the other hand, isn't quite as predictable as the One M9, it has moved on up since last year with the change to a sealed metallic frame and the $699 retail price reflects that move. This is a $100 bump from last year's Galaxy S5, and it becomes questionable whether we will see on contract pricing at $199 or $299. Of course, this doesn't include the Galaxy S6 Edge, which will likely summon at least a $50 — and more likely $100 — premium on the standard Galaxy S6.

Realizing that most people aren't swayed too greatly by the full retail pricing of a phone due to on-contract pricing and the proliferation of monthly payment options like JUMP! and Edge, does the $100 premium for the Galaxy S6 sway your opinion on which flagship you might go for this year?

Apple and LG tie for best smartphone of 2014 award, Moto 360 takes wearables

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 07:18 AM PST

Every year at Mobile World Congress, the GSMA — the folks behind the event — vote on the best technology, software and ideas in mobile. This year's winners might have seemed obvious, but there were a couple of "gotchas" that caused us to take notice.

The biggest shock is that Apple didn't take home the Best Smartphone award alone for the iPhone 6. They actually tied with LG for the LG G3. It's sure to be great news for the South Korean manufacturer up against stiff competition from their neighbors Samsung or the folks out in Taiwan named HTC.

Motorola took home two awards for two different products. They won Best Affordable Smartphone (those which cost $100 or less) for last year's Moto E, and took home the Best Wearable category for the stunning Moto 360.

Moto 360 DSC06955

Other notable wins at the Global Mobile Awards include Gameloft winning Best Game for Asphalt 8, and IFTTT winning the big grandaddy of app awards with their automated web service being voted the best overall app of 2014. Well deserved, we'd say.

As we found when we reflected on the year a while back, 2014 was great. The best part is that 2015 is looking even better with tons more wearables bound to be introduced, great new smartphones on the horizons and more innovations that we have yet to even know about. Be sure to take a look at all of the winners over at the GMA website if you're curious.
