Hangouts For Android Gets Easy Video Chat Invitation Links

Posted: 07 Mar 2015 11:50 AM PST

unnamed (1) Hangouts video chats are pretty good in terms of handling multiple up and down streams, but the invitation and verification system leaves a lot to be desired - there's something of a traffic jam when we start the Android Police podcast video, for example. Today Google is making that a little easier by allowing mobile users to join a Hangouts video session with a simple invitation link, instead of needing an explicit, personal invitation via the Hangouts/Google+ system.

The app has accumulated over a million downloads on the Play Store, so clearly it has earned some loyal users. The update to version 3.1 adds a couple of crucial features: full support for both Android Wear and Android 5.0. If you have either one, you'll appreciate the added functionality.

Mint v4.1 Update Brings Bill Reminders, Navigation Tweaks, And No More Floating Action Button

In an update that we can call minor by Mint's standards, they have refined the interface and navigation in addition to adding a bill reminder feature. This new feature is actually quite helpful, since it can be hard to keep a multitude of due dates straight in your head.

Of course, this won't help reduce any confusion between Mint and the recently-rebranded Mint Bills service. To be clear, you will not be paying your bills on Mint; you will just be reminded about them.

Alleged Sony Xperia Z4 chassis gets compared to Xperia Z3

Posted: 07 Mar 2015 09:31 AM PST

sony_xperia_z4_leaked_chassis_comparison_030715

At MWC 2015, there was some belief that Sony would announce its next flagship phone. The Xperia Z4 was never unveiled in Barcelona and, instead, the company introduced the Xperia Z4 Tablet. It is strange that Sony separated the phone's announcement from the tablet, but it seems like we should learn about the Xperia Z4 soon because of alleged images of its chassis. The images show parts of Xperia Z4 compared to the preceding Xperia Z3.

Here are some notes regarding the leaked chassis:

  • Both handsets' length and widths are pretty much the same, the Xperia Z4 is slightly thinner

  • Microphone hole moved away from the headphone jack

  • No microSD card slot on the right side

  • SIM card slot moved to the left side

  • No cover on the charging port

LG G4 running Android 5.1 surfaces on test site

Posted: 07 Mar 2015 07:07 AM PST

lg_g4_android_51_tests

Following up on the success of last year's LG G3 smartphone, LG is working on a "radically different" LG G4 for release sometime in 2015. The device may debut as soon as April and new test results suggest LG is on track with development of the device. One of the benefits the company may have when they release the LG G4 is that Android 5.1 will have been available just long enough for it to ship on the G4 out of the box.

The test results for the LG G4 that surfaced on the html5test site show LG running Android 5.1 on the G4. The specific build number is LMY29F, which matches the build number running on the Google Android One smartphone. A newer version, build number LMY47E, of Android 5.1 has also been spotted in the Chromium issue tracker database running on a Nexus 5.

The hardware for the test device is listed with model number LG-H818, which is supposedly the Asian market variant of the LG G4.

New specs indicate HTC may change front camera on HTC One M9 Plus

Posted: 07 Mar 2015 06:47 AM PST

htc_one_m9_plus_front_camera_tight

Amongst the images of the HTC One M9 Plus that have started to float around, showing both the back of the device and the front with a physical home button, Twitter leakster @upleaks has updated the purported specs for the smartphone.

The change that was recently made is with the front camera. Previously, it was thought the device would have a 4MP Ultra Pixel camera. HTC has been moving away from that technology and it appears they have dropped it completely from the HTC One M9 Plus. The front camera is now believed to be a standard 13MP sensor, which is quite impressive itself for a front-facing camera.

The new images show the front of the device, which is very similar to the HTC One M9. The item that stands out is the large, physical home button on the front. Some sources believe HTC may include a fingerprint scanner in the button. Otherwise we see the prominent HTC BoomSound speaker grilles at the top and bottom, the HTC logo bar at the bottom of the screen, and the camera setup with sensor at the top.

A version of Android for virtual reality is reportedly in the works

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 05:16 PM PST

Hot on the heels of the debut of the Samsung Gear VR for Galaxy S6 and the HTC Vive, a new report suggests that Google's planning on getting into virtual reality in a big way too.

According to the Wall Street Journal , Google has a team consisting of "tens of engineers" that's working on a version of Android for virtual reality devices. The team is reportedly being headed up by Clay Bavor and Jeremy Doig, the former of which helped to create Google Cardboard. Details on this Android VR OS are light, but it's said that the software will be offered for free.

There's a lot of interest in virtual reality lately, and while Google does have its Cardboard VR headset and app, the company has yet to really dive into the market. A version of Android for VR devices could be a way to get into VR, get into it early, and perhaps become a major player in VR just like it has in smartphones and tablets.

What do you think of virtual reality? Are you interested in headsets like the Gear VR and Vive?

T-Mobile says that it’s ‘rewriting the rules of wireless again’ on March 18

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 04:47 PM PST

Looks like T-Mobile's got another big move to announce.

T-Mobile is sending out invites to an event that's taking place at 1:00 pm ET on March 18. T-Mo teases that it's "rewriting the rules of wireless again" and that its next announcement is "a real piece of work."

tmobilemarch18

So what might T-Mobile have planned? Well, that's a bit of a mystery right now. There haven't really been any leaks or rumors about big new T-Mobile promos or plans lately, so we don't really have any clues about what John Legere and Co. have planned for March 18.

What do you think T-Mobile's got up its sleeve for this event?
