Bing.com gets a makeover for Android phones

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 02:48 PM PDT

Just because you have an Android device doesn't mean that you must use Google as the go-to search engine. There are plenty of options available and one of them just received a makeover. Today, Microsoft unveiled a new look for Bing that focuses on content consumption. Rather than being so straightforward and emphasizing search, Bing now serves popular content. Also, Bing Rewards has a new home on the homepage.

The team behind the changes highlighted these areas:

User interface redesign: Based on numerous A/B experiments, we've determined that users prefer a swipe-up card layout (~5-10 percent swipe-up rate), a translucent color scheme and ~50 px initial card peak height.

Image of the day (IOTD) card: While on the go, you can learn something new about today's homepage image with our IOTD card. In addition, we shipped a new UX to help you learn even more about the topic.

Popular now card: News consumption is a common activity on mobile devices. We also know that on Bing.com desktop, the homepage news carousel at the bottom of the page is one of the most highly engaged features, connecting users to news stories across the web. With that in mind, we are bringing the desktop's news carousel experience to mobile. We select the top trending stories for you and update them throughout the day. Moving forward, we will continue to make these stories even more relevant and personal.

Bing Rewards card: Many Bing Mobile users are also heavily engaged Bing Rewards users. To facilitate their experience, we created a new Rewards card and gave it prime real-estate. This card gives you a convenient entry point to Bing Rewards and a quick way to view your status.

Settings Card: Another common activity for users is to change their Safe Search settings. With this card, users can discover and take action quickly (see above.)

Footer Card: In the footer section, we have added "Send feedback" link. We would love to hear your feedback, thoughts and suggestions.

Each phone is different, but once you've got the Galaxy S6 powered up and ready to go these are the first five things you should do with it.

The OnePlus One to get Lollipop-based CyanogenMod 12s over the “next few days”

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 09:18 AM PDT

With a variety of devices getting Lollipop, it was only a matter of time before the "flagship killer," the OnePlus One, would see its own CyanogenMod Lollipop update. While there are unofficial CM Lollipop builds out and about, and users using CyanogenMod 11s, other users have been waiting patiently for an official CyanogenMod 12s build to arrive for the device and they'll only have to wait patiently for another few days.

According to OnePlus founder Carl Pei, CM12 has just passed certification and will be rolling out within the next few days. Now that's a relative amount a time but it's nice to know that it will be rolling out soon. Of course, if you don't want to wait, you can install OnePlus' own OxygenOS.

Lyft tries to get social with latest update

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 09:03 AM PDT

Lyft, the "taxi & bus alternative," is moving into the realm of social platforms with a new update they have rolled out that makes "Profiles" available to users. The new feature is designed to add a little extra level of comfort and familiarity between riders and drivers and perhaps bridge the awkwardness that is present when strangers meet. Lyft says they were inspired by some feedback they got from users of their Lyft Line carpooling service. Those users reported they ended up sharing interesting connections and in some cases forming friendships.

The new Profiles feature gives users the ability to add three data points to their account – hometown, favorite music, and an open-ended bio where users can put in whatever they want to share. Driver profiles will have some additional data including their average star rating and the number of rides provided. Lyft is not making the completion of the Profile information mandatory, so users can just leave it blank if they want.

You can get the Lyft app for your Android device using one of the Play Store links below. Do you think Lyft's Profiles will prove to be a successful addition to their service?

That's right ladies and gentlemen, $179 will net you the leather-wristband Moto 360 and $229 will score you a metal-clad version. Watch the first batch of Samsung Galaxy S6 commercials [VIDEO]

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 08:19 AM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxys S6 Edge are officially on sale now. Samsung has already been heavily advertising the devices, but now we should see the marketing really pick up. This is where Samsung sets itself apart from other Android manufacturers. Everyone knows what a "Galaxy" is, and soon everyone will know the Galaxy S6.

The first couple of new Galaxy S6/Edge ads are starting to pop up on Samsung's YouTube channels. The first one stars James Corden, new host of The Late Show. In the ad he is battling with his alter-ego hipster director, who Samsung named "Wilf" for some reason.

The second ad is all about anticipation. You can see people at the top of roller coasters, at the top of a waterfall, about to go on stage, and more. The the Galaxy S6 Edge is shown and everyone experiences the joy that follows anticipation.

What do you think of these new ads?

Huge discounts on all Moto 360 smartwatches on Amazon

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 08:17 AM PDT

Following the deal on the Champagne Gold Moto 360 yesterday, we have even more amazing deals on the Moto 360 today, with the standard leather models coming in at an all time low of $179 and the metal versions also at an all time low of $229!

While the Moto 360 remains my favorite smartwatch — and I've tried basically all of them — I have to caution you to remember that the second generation model is probably weeks away from an announcement. Best Buy is showing some similar price cuts on the Moto 360, pointing to this perhaps being a permanent price drop. With that said, you obviously aren't going to see any deals this good on the new model until next year, so if spending $250 or more on a smartwatch seems crazy to you then this is your chance to own a fantastic smartwatch at a great price.

Amazon has just lowered the pricing of the Moto 360 to as low as $179 for the model with a leather strap.

The Moto 360 price has been cut on Amazon, bringing the leather strap model down to $179 and the metal to $229. These price cuts bring the device to the cheapest that it has been yet, which is not all that surprising at this point in the product's life cycle.
