AT&T’s HTC One M9 now receiving its ‘camera improvements’ update

Posted: 21 Apr 2015 02:39 PM PDT

When HTC launched the One M9, one of the main takeaways was that the camera, while better than in previous iterations, still had room for improvement. As a result, HTC confirmed that a software update would land on the handset to help improve things.

AT&T's variant is set to receive a maintenance update today, which HTC has confirmed will include the "camera improvements, thermal improvements" that owners have been waiting for. There are some unspecified bug fixes included as well, as is usual for these types of updates. Once the update is installed, the One M9′s software version will be bumped to 1.32.502.31.

According to some owners, the maintenance update is already landing on some devices.

What do you think of the One M9′s camera?

EA Sports Releases Graphically Impressive UFC Game For Android, Sucker Punches You With Pricey IAPs

Posted: 21 Apr 2015 02:35 PM PDT

UFC-ThumbI've seen many Android games that offer gorgeous screenshots in the Play Store that hardly reflect the visuals I encounter after downloading the title to my Nexus 7. That's not the case with EA Sports' newly-released UFC game. The press images were spot on. The fighters in this game are impressive, and fans are in for a visual treat.

Controls are more of a mixed bag. EA Sports UFC uses a combination of taps and swipes to perform basic strikes and dodges.

AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S4 Active will update to Android 5.0 beginning today

Posted: 21 Apr 2015 11:30 AM PDT

The rollout for Android 5.0 Lollipop has been pretty consistent across manufacturers and devices at this point, and now AT&T subscribers with the Galaxy S4 Active have something to look forward to.

The Big Blue carrier has confirmed that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Galaxy S4 Active will begin today, April 21. The update is Android 5.0.1, and it weighs in at 1GB, so you'll want to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to get the new software on your device. The official change log looks like this:

Android 5.0 Lollipop Highlights

  • Songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one Android device can be immediately enjoyed across all of your Android devices.
  • New User Interface look and feel, more fluid motions
  • Priority mode to only allow certain notifications to get through
  • Battery saving features and remaining time left to charge or deplete indicators
  • Smart Lock to secure phone or tablet by pairing it with a trusted device like a wearable or car
  • Most frequently used settings available with just two swipes down from the top screen

As is usual for these types of over the air updates, the process can take a bit of time to reach all of the active units out there. So, if you want to try your luck to grab it manually, head into Settings –> More –> About device –> Software update –> Check for updates. If the update is waiting in the wings, you'll be able to download and install it.

Do you own a Galaxy S4 Active, or know someone else who does that will be excited about this update?

First Android 5.1.1 factory image is live, and it’s for the Nexus Player

Posted: 21 Apr 2015 11:18 AM PDT

Less than one week after we spotted out first mention of Android 5.1.1, Nexus Player owners can now move up to the still-unannounced update.

The Android 5.1.1 factory image for the Nexus Player is now live on Google's developer website. The update will bump your Android TV device up to build LMY47V, which is a smidge different than the LMY47W and LMY47S builds that were paired with the Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 9 last week.

If you absolutely have to be on Android 5.1.1 now, you can flash this factory image to your Nexus Player, but you'll wipe your device's data in the process. Of course, it's possible that the official OTA will begin rolling out soon now that the factory image is live, so you could just wait for that. Hopefully we'll hear something about Android 5.1.1 from Google soon.

For Jelly Button Games, understanding users is the key to creating and maintaining a successful game, particularly when growth relies on moving into overseas markets. The team makes extensive use of Google Analytics and Google BigQuery to analyze more than 3 billion events each month. By using this data, Jelly Button can pinpoint exactly where, when, and why people play their highly-rated game, Pirate Kings. Feeding this information back into development has driven active daily users up 1500 percent in just five months.

We caught up with Mor Shani, Moti Novo, and Ron Rejwan — some of the co-founders — in Tel Aviv, Israel, to discover how they created an international hit and keep it growing.

Learn about Google Analytics and taking your game to an international audience:

Moovit is a navigation app that specializes in bus and train routes, and the latest version completely overhauls the interface. In particular it's much easier to assign a destination location from the main screen: instead of manually entering an address via text, just slide the map around until the indicator is where you want to go.

Qualcomm will reportedly use Samsung’s foundries to make the Snapdragon 820

Posted: 21 Apr 2015 08:17 AM PDT

A lot of different companies are linked to a single smartphone, despite the fact that when the phone lands on store shelves, just a single logo usually finds its way onto the body. This is especially true with the parts that are installed under the hood. Qualcomm has typically relied on chip manufacturer TSMC to piece together the processors that get installed into many smartphones, but according to a new report that's changing.

The report, which was published by Re/code, states that Qualcomm will skip using TSMC when it comes to the manufacturing of its next high-end chip, the Snapdragon 820. Instead, Qualcomm will reportedly turn to the resources of Samsung and its foundries. The report indicates that while Qualcomm wanted to use TSMC, the fact that the manufacturer is still utilizing a 20nm fabrication process, rather than 14nm which is needed for the Snapdragon 820, swayed their decision.

As a result, Samsung will be the company that lands the manufacturing deal for the Snapdragon 820. As for the chip itself, it's expected to land in many high-end Android-based smartphones sometime in early 2016, and should use Qualcomm's own 64-bit cores to alleviate any issues with overheating.

At this point, there is no real shortage of "smart" launchers in the Android ecosystem. Of course, we have to put "smart" in quotation marks, because there still is a void in terms of truly good products trying to do that. So when I tell you that Bento is a new entrant in this bustling market of context-aware launchers, you shouldn't ask, "do we need another one?" You should ask, "is this the one that will really do a great job?"

Bento is a venture capital-backed project that is in a semi-private beta at the moment.

PSA: WhatsApp Now Lets You Report Users As Spam

WhatsApp has had spam-solving measures for a while now: you could block people from messaging you when you noticed something fishy about them (usually when receiving a photo, contact, link, or ad from someone you didn't know). Phone numbers that were blocked by several users eventually ended up being temporarily or permanently banned from using the service. However, there was no way for you to tell WhatsApp whether you were blocking a number for personal reasons or because they were actually sending spam messages.
