ap_resizeGoogle hasn't updated Chrome Remote Desktop on Android for a while, but today it's jumping from v39 to v43 to match the latest Chrome release. The good news is the app no longer looks like a relic from the holo age, but I'm not seeing any feature additions as of yet.

Microsoft Outlook For Android Leaves Its Preview Status Behind

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 01:39 PM PDT

Outlook-ThumbMicrosoft Outlook came to Android in January, and after no shortage of updates, the company now feels that the time has come to remove the app's preview label. It has become a full-fledged piece of software, mature and feature-rich enough to take on the world like countless freshly-out-of-beta apps before it. Outlook for Android, according to Microsoft, is ready to compete with its iOS counterpart.

There are numerous signs of this maturation.

LG teases the leather body of the G4 in new video

LG has released a short new teaser highlighting the premium leather back of the upcoming G4. With the G4 shaping up to be one of the year's hottest flagships, LG is doing all that it can to build hype around the device. For several weeks now, we've been treated to small official hints and teasers about the G4 that have been accompanied by a veritable flood of leaks, including one that revealed nearly everything about the device, including its vegetable-tanned leather back.

The new teaser video doesn't reveal anything new, but continues to emphasize the care and attention that LG has given to the G4, particularly in regards to its design. While the phone is set to wow us in several areas, the design looks to be a stunner. We'll know all the official details on April 28, but while you wait you can check out this huge leak that gave away most of the specs.

Regal Cinemas Shows How An Android App Is Done Right With A Material Design Upgrade

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 12:51 PM PDT

unnamed (11)Most Android apps from large corporations don't really consider the design guidelines worth following - hell, a lot of them are carbon copies of the counterpart iPhone app. (From three years ago.) The app from movie theater chain Regal Cinemas is refreshingly different: even before the latest update it followed Holo guidelines pretty well throughout the interface. The latest update, published in the Play Store yesterday, brings it up to Material Design.

New Android Code Samples

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 12:09 PM PDT

Posted by Rich Hyndman, Developer Advocate

A new set of Android code samples, covering Android Wear, Android for Work, NFC and Screen capturing, have been committed to our Google Samples repository on GitHub. Here's a summary of the new code samples:

XYZTouristAttractions

This sample mimics a real world mobile and Android Wear app. It has a more refined design and also provides a practical example of how a mobile app would interact and communicate with its Wear counterpart.

The app itself is modeled after a hypothetical tourist attractions experience that notifies the user when they are in close proximity to notable points of interest. In parallel,the Wear component shows tourist attraction images and summary information, and provides quick actions for nearby tourist attractions in a GridViewPager UI component.

DeviceOwner - A Device Owner is a specialized type of device administrator that can control device security and configuration. This sample uses the DevicePolicyManager to demonstrate how to use device owner features, including configuring global settings (e.g.automatic time and time-zone) and setting the default launcher.

NfcProvisioning - This sample demonstrates how to use NFC to provision a device with a device owner. This sample sets up the peer device with the DeviceOwner sample by default. You can rewrite the configuration to use any other device owner.

NFC BeamLargeFiles - A demonstration of how to transfer large files via Android Beam on Android 4.1 and above. After the initial handshake over NFC, file transfer will take place over a secondary high-speed communication channel such as Bluetooth or WiFi Direct.

ScreenCapture - The MediaProjection API was added in Android Lollipop and allows you to easily capture screen contents and/or record system audio. The ScreenCapture sample demonstrates how to use the API to capture device screen in real time and show it on a SurfaceView.

As an additional bonus, the Santa Tracker Android app, including three games, two watch-faces and other goodies, was also recently open sourced and is now available on GitHub.

As with all the Android samples, you can also easily access these new additions in Android Studio using the built in Import Samples feature and they're also available through our Samples Browser.

Check out a sample today to help you with your development!

The app requires a Facebook login, which should not come as a surprise. It lists all your Facebook contacts, even those who don't have phone numbers attached.

Google launches Project Fi, its own wireless service

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 11:34 AM PDT

Just as rumors pointed to, Google has announced its own MVNO, Project Fi. Project Fi is Google's new service that aims to change the wireless market and provide a better experience for customers. The major selling point of Project Fi is that customers pay only for the data that they use. $30/month grants access to the basics of talk, text, Wi-Fi tethering and international coverage. From there, it's a flat rate of $10 for 1GB of data. You can choose an amount at the beginning of the month and if you go over, you'll simply be charged another $10 for every 1GB you use. If you're under the data amount that you paid for, Google will refund you the difference, with $1 for every 1/10 of a GB.

Google is launching the service in conjunction with T-Mobile and Sprint, which leads us to the second feature of Project Fi. Google has developed new technology that will allow your device to switch intelligently between Sprint, T-Mobile and Wi-Fi for the best speed and coverage in any area. The best part is that the transition will be seamless, so if you're on a call and transition from Wi-Fi to Sprint's network, the call won't drop.

Finally, Project Fi allows your phone number to "live in the cloud." While it's not entirely clear how all of it works, it seems as though Google is relying on its technology from Google Voice and Hangouts to allow customers to send texts and place calls from their computer or tablet, even when they don't have their phone.

Excited for Project Fi? There are a couple caveats. First of all, Project Fi will only work with the Nexus 6, at least for now. It's the only smartphone that currently has the hardware and software to support the service's features, and it also allows Google to better monitor the service, as the company knows the Nexus 6 backwards and forwards. The second is that Project Fi will be available as an invite-only Early Access Program. If you'd like to sign up, you can do so here. Google will be sending out a small number of invites each beginning this week. Again, you'll need to have a Nexus 6 or be willing to purchase one if you want to become a part of Project Fi.

Facebook launches ‘Hello’ for easy caller ID and call blocking

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 10:36 AM PDT

When a phone call arrives and the number is blocked, or unknown, or it's just a string of numbers you don't recognize, the impulse to answer that call can be lessened a great deal. Facebook is trying to make it easier for people to know who is trying to get in touch with them, and maybe even block a call or two if it comes right down to it.

Today, April 22, Facebook officially unveiled "Hello," a brand new application that was created within the company's Creative Labs, with initial testing for the product launching on Android to start. With the new app, which ties directly into Facebook, you'll be able to see who is calling you, block unwanted calls and even do a quick search for people and places.

image Facebook Home2

Interestingly enough, Hello will show you who's calling you even if you don't have the number saved in your contacts, and it will also show you anything that that person has shared with you on Facebook before. Hello will also make it easy for people to block calls, with settings geared towards blocking numbers that are already frequently blocked, block specific numbers and more. Those blocked calls will automatically go to voicemail, and you'll be able to look them over in a recent calls list.

The information that Hello populates is readily available on Facebook, and any information that's not present there will not be displayed in the app.

It's a free download right now, available below.

Game Performance: Explicit Uniform Locations

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 10:06 AM PDT

Posted by Shanee Nishry, Games Developer Advocate

Uniforms variables in GLSL are crucial for passing data between the game code on the CPU and the shader program on the graphics card. Unfortunately, up until the availability of OpenGL ES 3.1, using uniforms required some preparation which made the workflow slightly more complicated and wasted time during loading.

Let us examine a simple vertex shader and see how OpenGL ES 3.1 allows us to improve it:

#version 300 es

layout(location = 0) in vec4 vertexPosition;
layout(location = 1) in vec2 vertexUV;

uniform mat4 matWorldViewProjection;

out vec2 outTexCoord;

void main()
{
outTexCoord = vertexUV;
gl_Position = matWorldViewProjection * vertexPosition;
}

Note: You might be familiar with this shader from a previous Game Performance article on Layout Qualifiers. Find it here.

We have a single uniform for our world view projection matrix:

uniform mat4 matWorldViewProjection;

The inefficiency appears when you want to assign the uniform value.

You need to use glUniformMatrix4fv or glUniform4f to set the uniform's value but you also need the handle for the uniform's location in the program. To get the handle you must call glGetUniformLocation.

GLuint program; // the shader program
float matWorldViewProject[16]; // 4x4 matrix as float array

GLint handle = glGetUniformLocation( program, "matWorldViewProjection" );
glUniformMatrix4fv( handle, 1, false, matWorldViewProject );

That pattern leads to having to call glGetUniformLocation for each uniform in every shader and keeping the handles or worse, calling glGetUniformLocation every frame.

Warning! Never call glGetUniformLocation every frame! Not only is it bad practice but it is slow and bad for your game's performance. Always call it during initialization and save it somewhere in your code for use in the render loop.

This process is inefficient, it requires you to do more work and costs precious time and performance.

Also take into consideration that you might have multiple shaders with the same uniforms. It would be much better if your code was deterministic and the shader language allowed you to explicitly set the locations of your uniforms so you don't need to query and manage access handles. This is now possible with Explicit Uniform Locations.

You can set the location for uniforms directly in the shader's code. They are declared like this

layout(location = index) uniform type name;

For our example shader it would be:

layout(location = 0) uniform mat4 matWorldViewProjection;

This means you never need to use glGetUniformLocation again, resulting in simpler code, initialization process and saved CPU cycles.

This is how the example shader looks after the change. Changes are marked in bold:

#version 310 es

layout(location = 0) in vec4 vertexPosition;
layout(location = 1) in vec2 vertexUV;

layout(location = 0) uniform mat4 matWorldViewProjection;

out vec2 outTexCoord;

void main()
{
outTexCoord = vertexUV;
gl_Position = matWorldViewProjection * vertexPosition;
}

As Explicit Uniform Locations are only supported from OpenGL ES 3.1 we also changed the version declaration to 310.

Now all you need to do to set your matWorldViewProjection uniform value is call glUniformMatrix4fv for the handle 0:

const GLint UNIFORM_MAT_WVP = 0; // Uniform location for WorldViewProjection
float matWorldViewProject[16]; // 4x4 matrix as float array

glUniformMatrix4fv( UNIFORM_MAT_WVP, 1, false, matWorldViewProject );

This change is extremely simple and the improvements can be substantial, producing cleaner code, asset pipeline and improved performance. Be sure to make these changes If you are targeting OpenGL ES 3.1 or creating multiple APKs to support a wide range of devices.

To learn more about Explicit Uniform Locations check out the OpenGL wiki page for it which contains valuable information on different layouts and how arrays are represented.

NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet and Portable will be updated to Android 5.1 soon

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 10:03 AM PDT

While the NVIDIA SHIELD garnering the most excitement right now is the console due out next month, NVIDIA is continuing to kill it with support of the SHIELD Tablet and Portable.

SHIELD Tablet is second only to Nexus tablets as far as update speed, and it will continue that track record with its Android 5.1 update, according to an NVIDIA forum administrator.

NVIDIA-SHIELD-Tablet-5.1-comment

SHIELD Portable, on the other hand, has fallen slightly behind. It's still running Android 4.4, but considering how centered around the gaming experience that device is, SHIELD Portable owners shouldn't be too put out. At least I can say that I haven't been pining for a Lollipop update on my SHIELD Portable. Regardless of whether it was a concern or not, though, another NVIDIA forum admin chimed in with the cheerful news that the SHIELD Portable will be jumping straight to Android 5.1 sometime in the next few weeks.

Again, with the NVIDIA SHIELD console arriving next month, it is encouraging to see NVIDIA still putting serious effort into the rest of the SHIELD line. We also still anticipate a follow-up to the SHIELD Portable sometime this summer, as NVIDIA has been adamant in the past that they weren't giving up on that form factor.

Do any of you own SHIELD devices currently? And are you considering ordering the new SHIELD next month?

Android Wear companion app updated with new design and features

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 06:34 AM PDT

Google is sending out an update to the Android Wear companion app that brings in a visual refresh and a few new features. The app itself has been updated to include more Material Design elements, and new facets of that include further shadowing and an enhanced sense of layering and depth. Device related settings are now seen when you tap on a specific device, rather than being on the main page with the general Android Wear settings.

The big new feature is Cloud Sync, which essentially enables Wi-Fi on Android Wear devices. Cloud Sync allows you to receive notifications, use voice search and more when your watch and phone aren't connected by Bluetooth. Whenever your phone joins a Wi-Fi network, the info is automatically sent to your watch, allowing it to use the Wi-Fi network as well. A heads-up, however, Cloud Sync does require you to have the latest version of Android Wear on your device in order to use it.

All in all, this is a pretty solid update, and we're particularly excited about Cloud Sync. Get updating both the companion app and the firmware and let us know how you like it!
