Is HTC working on its own variation of Android Auto?

Posted: 04 Apr 2015 02:33 PM PDT

New markets are always being analyzed by comapanies because of their ability to expand profits. Home automation, wearables, and virtual reality are all being flooded with new products. The automobile market, though, has been slowly seeing the arrival of new platforms and complementing hardware. Current options include Google's Android Auto, Apple's CarPlay, and MirrorLink. Later this year, HTC could be involved with its own variation of Android Auto. On Reddit, one poster shared the front page release note for a device going by the codename "Cello."

The release note shows that special components are being used. Night Vision, Sonar, Mini HMI (Human Machine Interface), DVD, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Lane Departure Warning System, Navigation and GPS are all named. Some of these are not available through Android Auto at this time.

Interestingly, HTC has apparently worked with Android 4.4 KitKat to operate Cello. That could change by the time it is introduced to the world.

How to set up the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Posted: 04 Apr 2015 01:52 PM PDT

The Galaxy S6 has a pretty extensive setup process, but it accomplishes a lot the first time you turn your phone on.

While it sure would be nice for every phone to have the same exact setup process when you first turn it on, that just isn't the case. Even within manufacturers, new versions of software usually bring a new setup process, and while they may be familiar they aren't always the same. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge guide you through the process pretty smoothly and get a lot done in just a few steps — let us walk you through it.

OnePlus OxygenOS is now available for download

Posted: 04 Apr 2015 07:17 AM PDT

OnePlus One owners, your Lollipop update has finally arrived.

OnePlus today posted its own OxygenOS ROM, which is based on Android 5.0. The update is now available for manual flashing, and OnePlus has instructions on how to perform the installation on both Windows and Mac. OnePlus says that it's working on an "easier, more automated" way to load OxygenOS onto the OnePlus One, but right now your only option is to flash it yourself.

OnePlus's goal with OxygenOS was to utilize Google's Material Design and offer a bloatware-free experience, and so far it looks like the company was able to stick to its goals. It did include a little of its own special sauce with OxygenOS, though. One unique feature of the OS is that you can perform gestures when the screen is off. Double-tapping the screen will wake it, drawing an O will launch the camera, drawing a V will launch the flashlight, and you can draw two lines to play music, then draw < or > to change tracks.

OnePlus has also made its Quick Settings feature customizable by letting you add, remove, and rearrange the toggles in the notification drawer. There's a File Manager in OxygenOS, too, letting you manage all of the music, documents, and other files that you've got loaded onto your OnePlus One.

If you want to give OxygenOS a try for yourself, you can get the install ball rolling right here. It's also worth noting that the OnePlus One will get a second Lollipop update option with CyanogenMod 12S, but right now it's not known when that update will be released.

If you decide to flash OxygenOS onto your OnePlus One, don't forget to tell us what you think of it!

Report: Sony expects to sell 38 million handsets this year

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 09:47 PM PDT

The mobile industry has not been kind to Sony for the last few years. Sony has failed to recognize it needs to change in order to stay competitive and considered leaving the industry altogether because of this. It seems like the company will remain involved in mobile for the next year or two because a new campaign promotes their devices' capabilities. Also, leaks have revealed that a Xperia Z4 is on the way. The Xperia Z4 and other handsets cause Sony to believe that it will sell thirty-eight million handsets in 2015, according to Digitimes. The report notes that Sony's goal for the year has been lowered because of changes within the company's mobile division. Sony now has a focus on mid-range and high-end devices.

OnLive announces its shutdown after Sony acquires “important parts”

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 09:17 PM PDT

Cloud gaming service OnLive has announced it will be shut down later this month. The reason for the shutdown is that Sony has acquired "important parts" of the service and the company has no plans to continue operating OnLive. That decision makes sense considering Sony operates PlayStation Now, another cloud gaming service featuring titles from the platforms vast catalog. So the pieces of OnLive being acquired by Sony are almost guaranteed to be integrated into PlayStation Now.

Data centers supporting OnLive's services will cease to exist on April 30. Subscribers will no longer be charged and games will go inaccessible on that date. All data will be deleted after accounts are closed.

The following notice was left on OnLive's customer service site:

It is with great sadness that we must bring the OnLive Game Service to a close. Sony is acquiring important parts of OnLive, and their plans don't include a continuation of the game service in its current form. Your service should continue uninterrupted until April 30, 2015. No further subscription fees will be charged, and you can continue to play all of your games until that date.

After April 30, 2015, our data centers will shut down and the service will be offline. All accounts will be closed, and all data deleted including game save data, achievements, and credit card data will be deleted. If you purchased a Steam game from OnLive, that game will still be available on Steam. No refunds will be available for any game purchases, hardware purchases, or subscriptions.

We will have extremely limited coverage for customer service over the next 30 days. We hope the FAQs below will answer all of your questions. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being an OnLive customer, and we wish you all the best.

Samsung’s next Exynos processor will allegedly feature custom cores

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 08:47 PM PDT

The next processor released by Samsung under the Exynos name feature its own custom cores. The latest report published out of China claims that the company will shift away from Cortex A72 cores in favor of its own creation. The upcoming processor is known internally as "Mongoose" and will be clocked at 2.3GHz. Performance of a single core on Mongoose is said to be considerably better than the current Exynos 7420.

This is not the first time we heard of such plans about Samsung and its processors. In 2013, there was a report that the custom cores in its processors would arrive the following year. That never happened and a few weeks ago a report matching today's surfaced. Chances are we see Mongoose debut sometime in 2016.

You can find the Nexus 9 for $75 off at Best Buy [DEALS]

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 06:48 PM PDT

Nexus 9 DSC07280

The Nexus 9 — although not perfect in any sense — is still the only 9-inch Nexus Tablet out there. Love it or hate it. For those that aren't turned off by some of its shortcomings (we've seen varying reports of bugginess and questionable build quality), the tablet can be found at Best Buy this weekend for a cool $75 off.

That brings the price down to $325 for the 16GB version, and $405 for the 32GB model in either Indigo black, or Lunar white. Normally priced at $400/$480, that's still $75 cheaper than you'll find the Nexus 9 on the Google Store.

The tablet has received mostly favorably reviews on Best Buy.com and Amazon, where we're seeing a solid 4-star rating. That's gotta say something, right? Link to the Nexus 9 at Best Buy provided below.

Periscope for Android is in the works and coming ‘soon,’ company says

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 05:17 PM PDT

When Periscope launched on iOS last month, an Android version was conspicuously absent from the app's debut. The company has come forward to say that the app won't be missing for much longer, though.

Periscope recently put together a blog post to answer some of the questions that it's gotten about its app recently. Of course, one of those questions was "When is Android coming?" Periscope says that it's currently working on an Android version of its app and that it'll launch "soon."

Considering Android's large slice of the mobile market, it's kind of surprising that there's no version of Periscope available to us yet. And since there's no Meerkat app on Android either, those of us that'd like to get in on all of the livestreaming action that's been going on lately are out of luck. Thankfully, that's going to change soon now that we know Periscope for Android is close. Stay tuned and we'll let you know just as soon as it becomes available.

Google Wallet update brings Maps integration and keyword search

Google Wallet tap to pay phone

Google Wallet is adding a few small, but pretty worthwhile new features in the Google Play Store today. Announced on their Google+ page, Wallet won't just tell you where you bought something, they'll actually show you. This is done using Google Maps which has now been integrated into the app and viewable in the transaction details.

Google Wallet rich receipt Maps

Now the next feature is even more useful. Imagine it's several weeks later and you can't for the life of you remember where it was you had those amazing tacos during a drunken night out with your friends. You could scroll through all your transactions like an animal, keeping an eye out for anything related to Mexican eateries.

Or, like a future-man, you can simply search through your transaction history by merchant name, item of purchase, or any other keywords. Type in "bomb tacos" and you'll pull up a transaction — now with a handy Maps location — of that amazing hole-in-the-wall.

The update should already be waiting for you in the Google Play Store, so make sure you update and happy shopping.

Amazon Prime Instant Video extends to Android tablets

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 03:47 PM PDT

Amazon does not give Android us much attention as it should even though its own hardware is powered by the platform. The company takes an extremely long amount of time before bringing its services to Android and other platforms. Prime Instant Video, which is included in a package for $99 per year, took an eternity to reach phones with Android. There was also the requirement that the Amazon app had to be installed before being redirected to get the Prime Instant Video app from the Amazon Appstore. That's a lot of unnecessary work and it will continue with the new support of Prime Instant Video for Android tablets.
