Lollipop Now Hitting The Galaxy Tab S 10.5 LTE

Posted: 13 May 2015 03:53 PM PDT

Tab S 10.5

The Galaxy Tab S 10.5 received Lollipop back in March and now nearly two months later, the LTE variant of the killer tablet is getting its taste of Google's latest treat.  The update brings the device up to Android 5.0.2 which, while not the absolute latest version of Google's software, is great news for users.

If you haven't received the update yet, be sure to jump into your settings and scroll down to "About Device."  In there, you'll be able to do a manual check for the update.  Let us know if you receive it and how you like it!

Is This The Galaxy S6 Active?

Posted: 13 May 2015 03:53 PM PDT

Galaxy S6 Active

We may have just gotten our first look at Samsung's ultra durable variant of their flagship device, the Galaxy S6 Active.  The above photo was sent in to GSM Arena by anonymous tipster and it sure looks like it could be the upcoming device.

The overall body shape definitely resembles that of the Galaxy S6 with the obvious exception of the reinforced shell.  In typical "Active" fashion, the physical home button and accompanying capacitive buttons have been replaced by three reinforced physical buttons.  Similar to the S5 Active, the S6 Active appears to have ditched the fingerprint sensor which makes sense as the home button has been replaced.

In addition to providing the photo, the tipster also claims that the S6 Active will pack a much larger 3500 mAh battery.  If true, the S6 Active could provide some excellent battery life given that the 2550 mAh battery in the Plain Jane S6 does a pretty solid job.  The rest of the specs are expected to match those of the original S6 and Edge.

Although the device pictured above sports AT&T branding, there's a good chance that the device will come to Canada as the S5 Active hit various carriers last year.  We'll keep an eye out for a release date and pass on any new information we come across.

Huawei hosting US event in NYC June 2

Posted: 13 May 2015 02:48 PM PDT

Huawei has something up its sleeve for the US market, and I'm pretty excited to see what it is. The company recently entered the US market with the Ascend Mate line of unlocked devices, selling them for low prices with pretty decent specs. And something new might be coming soon!

The event will be held in New York City on June 2, and this teaser image has been released. You can see small glimpses of a hold and a white device, but no real info has been given. Maybe the fact that the front facing camera was singled out indicates that there will be a focus on selfies and a high megapixel count for the front facing camera.

Stay tuned for more coverage on the event!

Turns Out The Amazon Instant Video APK From A Sony TV Actually Works Really Well For Other Android TV Devices [APK Download]

AmazonInstantVideo-ThumbAndroid TV may look different from vanilla Android, but underneath that tiled interface is the same operating system you know and love. That means it's possible to sideload whatever APKs you want. The thing is, without a touchscreen, most of them are pretty useless.

Take the regular Amazon Instant Video app. Besides requiring that you have the general Amazon app installed first, it fails to provide a passable experience on Android TV (which lacks an officially sanctioned Instant Video app because Amazon).

Second gen Moto E 4G LTE getting Android 5.1 update

Posted: 13 May 2015 01:02 PM PDT

If you're the owner of a second generation Moto E 4G LTE, you're in luck, because the company is rolling out the Android 5.1 update! Note that this applies only to the 4G LTE models, and potentially only to the XT1527 model. But with any model, check for updates and see if you get it!

The update brings the latest version of Android, 5.1 Lollipop. There are quite a few tweaks to look forward to. Swiping up a heads up notification no longer clears it from the notification panel, WiFi and Bluetooth tiles now have drop downs to change between devices, and more. Plus there are quite a few fixes included. Hit the source link for a full list of changes.

If you don't see the update on your device yet, you may have to wait until it rolls out to everyone. Hopefully it'll reach more devices soon!

Soon you’ll be able to order Domino’s pizza with a tweet and an emoji

Posted: 13 May 2015 12:42 PM PDT

We're truly living in the future, and I have to admit, it's a pretty silly future. Domino's has announced that in just a week, you'll be able to order pizza by tweeting its Twitter account… with a pizza emoji. It's that simple, a single emoji in a tweet and your pizza will be made and delivered.

This isn't some promotion, either. Domino's says that this will be a permanent ordering option starting May 20. And since more than half of all Domino's orders come from online sources, it actually makes some sense to start doing orders through Twitter. The plan is to attract busy techie people, since this is a 5 second order instead of the normal few minutes of building your order manually.

This move has also made Twitter pretty happy, as it drives users to use the social network more, as well as expand its functionality. It's definitely a funny way of ordering pizza, so tell us what you think of it!

You can try things out for yourself by installing Chrome Dev from the Play Store, enabling http://chromeflags/#enable-new-video-renderer, and restarting the browser.

AT&T subscribers will get a free subscription to Hulu this year

Posted: 13 May 2015 12:04 PM PDT

AT&T has announced a new partnership with video streaming service Hulu and made sure that its subscribers get a bonus out of it.

On Wednesday, May 13, AT&T officially announced the new partnership with Hulu and also revealed that, beginning in 2015, Big Blue subscribers will get a free subscription to the video streaming service. That means that all of the content that's usually blocked behind a premium paywall, better known as Hulu Plus, will be readily available at no extra charge to AT&T subscribers.

While the partnership and free subscription have already been announced, just when this perk will go live for subscribers is unknown at this point. The announcement does indicate that it should be sometime before the end of 2015, though, so at least there's something to look forward to this year.

Sprint says Android 5.1.1 update for Nexus 5 is on the way

Posted: 13 May 2015 10:18 AM PDT

Android 5.1.1 has already begun arriving on some devices, and now Sprint is adding to the mix by saying that the newest software for Google's mobile operating system is on the way to the Nexus 5.

Sprint has recently updated the support page for the Nexus 5, and it outlines that the Android 5.1.1 update is on the way. When, specifically, the rollout will begin is still anyone's guess at this point, but interestingly enough the page does say the update began on March 11. That's likely a typo, but considering the support page has been updated, it's likely that the update will begin soon enough.

When the new software lands on a Nexus 5 out in the wild, it will bring the build number up to LMY48B, and the Now Network says it will include "security enhancements."

If you have a Nexus 5, are you looking forward to get the update?

T-Mobile slashes the price of the Nexus 6 while Best Buy kicks off HTC One M8 deal

Posted: 13 May 2015 08:33 AM PDT

We're always on the lookout to help you save some cash, and to that end, we've got a couple of noteworthy deals on Android smartphones to tell you about.

The Nexus 6 is Google's current flagship smartphone, and you can now snag the Lollipop-powered device from T-Mobile for $100 off its regular asking price. That means that the 32GB version is $549.84 (or 24 payments of $22.91) and the 64GB version is (or 24 payments of $24.99). One detail that's worth noting is that T-Mo only sells the Midnight Blue Nexus 6, but considering this deal, that might not be a huge deal to some.

Meanwhile, Best Buy is hosting a nice offer on the HTC One M8. You can now snag an AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon HTC One M8 for $299.99 without a contract. It's worth noting that this deal includes the special Harman Kardon version of the One M8 that's on Sprint, which has a pair of Harman Kardon AE-S in-ear headphones inside its box.

These are some nifty deals on two quality Android phones. The Nexus 6 is an option for folks that want a flagship Android phone that'll get updates quickly, while the HTC One M8 is still a respectable Android handset, despite the fact that it's no longer HTC's flagship.

Sony’s Xperia A4 is headed to Japan in June with a 20.7MP camera

Posted: 13 May 2015 08:19 AM PDT

At the end of April, Sony officially unveiled the Xperia Z4, the company's latest flagship smartphone. While it shared many similarities to the Xperia Z3 from last year, the changes it introduced may have swayed a few folks out there in the wild to call it their next daily driver.

However, for those that prefer a less-than-flagship smartphone and who happen to live in Japan, Sony's got you covered with the Xperia A4. It may not be as high-end as the Xperia Z4, but that didn't stop Sony from cramming some worthwhile specifications under the hood.

The Xperia A4 boasts 4.6-inch 1280×720 HD display, with a 20.7MP camera on the back and a 2.2MP front-facing camera on the other side. Inside, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor is powering the show, running at 2.5GHz. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, with a microSD card slot for extra storage. It's running Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, and the battery is measured in at 2600mAh. It has LTE connectivity, too.

As far as a launch window goes, Sony says the device will launch sometime in June for NTT DoCoMo in Japan. If the handset has an itinerary that brings it out of Japan anytime soon, Sony's keeping it under wraps for now.

What do you think of the Xperia A4?
