Garmin Killed Its Paid Viago Navigation App A Whole 8 Months After It Was Released, Didn't Bother Telling Anyone

Posted: 15 May 2015 03:25 PM PDT

Capture

Some time before late February earlier this year, Garmin removed its Viago navigation app from the Play Store (as well as iTunes). No explanation was given, and no announcement was made - it just went away. The app cost $2 ($0.99 if you got it on sale) and had numerous in-app purchases for expensive map packs and add-on features (ranging from $5-20). Viago was basically Garmin's attempt to compete with Google, Apple, Waze, and other virtual navigation apps, and it did using Nokia's HERE map data.

Must-have Quick Charge 2.0 accessories for your Android phone and tablet

Posted: 15 May 2015 02:48 PM PDT

If you've purchased a new Android smartphone or tablet in the past 12 months, there's a good chance that the device is compatible with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 technology. If you're not aware, Quick Charge 2.0 can charge a 3300mAh battery from 0 percent to 60 percent in 30 minutes. That's 75 percent faster than a standard 5 volt, 1 amp USB charger and 50 percent faster than Qualcomm's Quick Charge 1.0 technology, which has been available for a few years.

Unfortunately, not every Android device is compatible with the Quick Charge 2.0 standard. As a rule of thumb, Quick Charge 2.0 is compatible with any device that's powered by a Snapdragon processor that's been released within the past 12-14 months. This includes devices like the HTC One M8, HTC One M9, HTC Desire Eye, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, LG G3, LG G4 and even the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge (even though neither phone features a Qualcomm SoC). To see if your phone is compatible, check out Qualcomm's list of supported devices.

Buying an official Quick Charge 2.0 adapter from HTC, LG or Sony can be quite expensive. Fortunately, there are third-party accessory makers that are now offering a wide selection of Qualcomm-certified Quick Charge 2.0 products. The standard wall plug is the most common product, but you can find multi-port USB car chargers and external batteries as well.

Adult Swim's Tofu Hunter Opens Our Eyes To The Violence Behind Veganism

Tofu-ThumbI'm a vegetarian. Okay, pescetarian. Since I do occasionally eat fish, I'm aware that some animals have to die to sustain my current diet. But I did not know that was also the case when I put tofu in my stir fry. Fortunately, Adult Swim Games has opened my eyes. In Tofu Hunter, I learned that even when I'm not eating meat, that doesn't mean some poor creature wasn't gunned down to put food on my plate.

Google’s Designed for Families program set to go live during Google I/O

Posted: 15 May 2015 01:02 PM PDT

Last month, Google announced its plans to start a new initiative giving family-friendly content in Google Play credibility and visibility by letting developers tag their content as Designed for Families. According to an email going out to developers, the Designed for Families program is set to launch on May 28, the first day of Google I/O.

Designed for Families is another way for Google to organize content on Google Play, while also giving parents the peace of mind that anything marked as Designed for Families is safe for children and free of inappropriate content. In the email going out now, Google is urging developers to submit their apps to the Designed for Families program before May 28, when it will apparently launch.

Be on the lookout for more information on Designed for Families on the first day of Google I/O 2015. We wouldn't be surprised to see it get a special keynote shoutout.

It’s Official! The Iron Man Edition Of The S6 Edge Is Coming Soon!

Posted: 15 May 2015 12:20 PM PDT

Iron Man S6 Edge

While I don't necessarily classify myself as a full fledged geek, things like this make it hard to deny my geekiness.  Samsung has official confirmed that they will produce a limited edition Iron Man edition Galaxy S6 Edge and I couldn't be more excited.  The above teaser was Tweeted by Samsung earlier today and although we only get to see the box, it's already ridiculously epic.

In addition to stating that this is "coming soon," the Tweet also states that "availability in markets may differ by region."  Unfortunately, they give no clue as to which regions will get a crack at this beauty.  Fingers crossed that we get some here in Canada but at the same time it may be best if it didn't launch here as I'd most definitely throw my hard earned dollars at it.

What do you guys think?  Is the Iron Man edition S6 Edge on your wishlist too?

ASUS ZenWatch getting its Android 5.1.1 update

Posted: 15 May 2015 10:42 AM PDT

Good news, Android Wear users! The Android 5.1.1 update that was previously only available on the LG Watch Urbane is now making its way to other models.

The ASUS ZenWatch is now getting its Android 5.1.1 update. Reddit user Verdes8891 got the update yesterday, and since then it appears that at least a couple of other people have received it too. If you've got an ASUS ZenWatch, you can either wait for the OTA to hit your device or you can manually load it yourself using the OTA link that's been shared by Brian Buquoi and Android Police.

asuszenwatchandroid511small

This latest Android Wear update is a big one that adds several notable features. For example, always-on apps will let you keep an app up and running rather than disappearing when you drop your arm. When you're not actively looking at the watch screen, it'll turn black and white to save on battery life. This update also brings the ability to flick your wrist to scroll through news and notifications, support for drawing emojis, and more. Unfortunately, the ASUS ZenWatch won't get the Wi-Fi support part of this update since it doesn't have Wi-Fi. That's a bummer, but hey, at least you're getting the Android 5.1.1 update before most everyone else!

I don't have a Nexus Player, neither do I live in a country where Netflix is available, but I would have assumed that a movie and TV streaming app on a set-top box should support surround sound. By default. I mean, that's a given, isn't it? WRONG. So wrong. Couldn't be any more wrong. Netflix' official version for Android TV, 1.0.6 build 136, just plays sound in stereo, no Dolby in sight.

Samsung teases Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 edge

Posted: 15 May 2015 07:26 AM PDT

Samsung will soon continue its Avengers partnership with an Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 edge.

Samsung today took to Twitter to tease that an Iron Man version of the Galaxy S6 edge is "coming soon." The teaser image shows a red and gold box with Iron Man, The Avengers, and Galaxy S6 edge branding, but unfortunately, we don't get to peek at the phone itself.

A Samsung executive said earlier this month that the special Iron Man phone will be red, and while we don't know much else about the device's looks, we wouldn't be surprised if there ends up being some gold on there too. It's expected that this Iron Man GS6 edge will debut either this month or next, so it shouldn't be too much longer before we get to see what Iron Man in cellphone form looks like.

Galaxy S6 Active Shows Up On Samsung’s Website

Posted: 15 May 2015 01:19 AM PDT

Galaxy S6 Active Press

Well I guess we can finally count the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active as confirmed.  The rugged version of Samsung's flagship had leaked a few times over the past few days and now it has shown up on Samsung's own website.

The device is currently listed as a participating device in Samsung's Plus Program, a US only program that provides different benefits to loyal customers.  While the program itself isn't overly exciting, the fact that the device is listed is good news as it may be a sign that the launch of the flagship variant is imminent.

As we had previously reported, the S6 Active is expected to sport many of the same internals as its standard sibling.  That means a Exynos 7 octo-core processor, 3GB RAM, 16MP camera with OIS and a 5MP front facing camera.  It's also expected to sport a larger 3500 mAh battery and, in typical Active fashion, will be water resistant.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active shows up on Samsung Plus page

Posted: 14 May 2015 07:02 PM PDT

Calling the Galaxy S6 Active (not pictured above, but probably could have used one) a poorly kept secret is at this point an insult to poorly kept secrets.

Yesterday we saw shots of some AT&T branded Galaxy S6 Active units in the wild and today Samsung itself apparently forgot that they haven't made an official announcement and went ahead and added the S6 Active to the Samsung Plus Overview page.

galaxy-s6-active

The page also indicates that the S6 Active was launched on April 10th so perhaps all that is necessary is a reminder that Samsung neglected to do that and Galaxy fans with a penchant for beating the heck out of their phones can finally get an S6 of their own.

As we mentioned yesterday, beyond the burly exterior the S6 Active supposedly trades the fingerprint sensor for an extra 900 mAh of battery, which depending on your needs seems likes a worthwhile exchange.

Are any of you waiting for the S6 Active to arrive or is a plain old S6 or S6 edge in a case cutting it for you?

Microsoft has released the first Android beta of Hyperlapse Mobile, the culmination of a couple of years research. The app captures video from your camera and outputs a smooth, sped-up time lapse, which is far more complicated than you might expect. It can also convert existing videos. Rather than simply give you an end product that is akin to watching your video on fast forward, Hyperlapse intelligently chooses frames that make it far easier to watch.

Snake Rewind Hits The Play Store

Posted: 14 May 2015 05:03 PM PDT

Snake

Snake is Back!  Rumilus Design teamed up with the Taneli Armanto, the Nokia engineer behind the original iconic game, to reinvent the classic for the modern day smartphone.  Meet Snake Rewind.  The overall goal remains the same, eat stuff with your snake without crashing, but there are some new special fruit that give your snake some extra juice.

The graphics definitely pay homage to the original while still bringing a modern twist to it.  Controls on the other hand are a little tricky to get used to at first but after a couple of rounds I was pretty comfortable navigating the slithery creature around the board.  There is a freemium element to the game but thankfully it doesn't seem like you'll really need to invest much (if any) into the game unless you want to get really intense.

So if you want to get some old school gaming on, hit the link below.  I tried searching for it in the Play Store and came up with nothing so the link might be the easiest way to get it.
