Asus ZenFone 2 available tomorrow in the U.S. and Canada starting at $199

Posted: 18 May 2015 12:18 PM PDT

Asus doesn't have the best track record in North America, but that could be at least in part due to not bringing its strongest devices over here. The ZenFone 2 might not go toe to toe with Samsung or LG's finest, but with unlocked options at $199 and $299, ASUS is making a compelling option for budget-minded smartphone buyers.

There are just a few key differences between the two devices.

  • Intel Atom quad-core (1.8 or 2.3GHz)
  • 2 or 4GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • 16/32/64 GB ROM with microSD expansion
  • 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 5MP front facing camera
  • 3000mAh battery
  • 2.3GHz version includes 18W BoostMaster adapter for fast charging
  • Android 5.0

We haven't had the opportunity to use the new 64-bit quad-core Intel chip yet, so we'll have to withhold judgment on how it holds up against the best from Qualcomm or Samsung until that time. Asus seems pretty convinced that it will hold up to scrutiny, but we've been burned by Intel mobile options plenty of times in the past.

The camera is usually one of the weakest points for budget smartphones, and 13MP isn't going to blow anyone away, but that obviously doesn't tell much of the story. Asus is touting a low light mode that will offer incredible brightness at lower resolution, somewhat reminiscent of HTC, and also a shooting mode that will create 52MP images by stitching multiple shots together. Again, these features sound great, but we'll have to get our hands on the ZenFone 2 to really put it to the test.

The ZenFone 2 will be on sale tomorrow through Amazon, Newegg, B&H, and Groupon in the U.S., while Canada will rely on Newegg, Canada Computers, Memory Exchange and NCIX for their ZenFone 2 needs.

While selling outside the standard carrier model seems like a limiting decision, the reality is that that market just hasn't been working for Asus here, so we are happy to see them trying a new tactic.

Would you consider the Asus ZenFone 2 for your next device?

Have your mood-matching Spotify playlists eaten a 400MB hole in your pocket? Wipe 'em out. Don't need those cached maps of Thailand for that trip you took last summer anymore?

HTC is skipping a mini variant of the One M9

Posted: 18 May 2015 10:17 AM PDT

For the launch of the One M7, with its 4.7-inch display, HTC saw fit to release a smaller variant of the handset, the original One mini, with a 4.3-inch screen. After that, HTC would launch the One M8 with a 5-inch screen, and then a One mini 2 with a 4.5-inch display. The trend seemed simple enough: Here's a big flagship and a smaller option for those that might not want to go that route.

It's hard to ignore that the industry has been adopting big displays for its smartphones over the recent years, and HTC has been more than happy to ride that bandwagon with its own smartphones. But for those that enjoy a smaller option, HTC also had them covered, too. That won't be the case moving forward, though, as HTC North American President Jack Tong has confirmed HTC will be focusing on smartphones with 5-inch displays or bigger moving forward.

According to Tong, the industry is "moving towards new phones over 5 inches in size," and that HTC's product roadmap is holding right along that path, too. Tong does say "close to that of the industry," which could leave some wiggle room for the company if they do decide to change their mind at some point in the future, but for now it looks like HTC is focusing on bigger devices.

What do you think of that decision?

Appeals court reverses on part of the $930 million Apple v. Samsung verdict

Posted: 18 May 2015 08:42 AM PDT

Remember back in 2012 when the Apple v. Samsung trial over patent infringement and trade dress finally ended?

Well with the legal system being what it is, the case never really ended, and just today the court of appeals has ruled that the trade dress portion of the original ruling is to be thrown out. What that means is that Samsung should be getting a roughly $382 million savings on that original ruling. Not a bad deal for Samsung by any means. Heck, it might even cover the legal bills for the last three years.

Assuming this actually sticks, it's a nice step as far as ludicrous trade dress claims go, as the court made it clear that Apple's trademarks were attempting to establish a monopoly on features that are fundamental to the functioning of a smartphone.

While I would love to say this is the last we will hear of this trial (or any such trial for that matter), I have little doubt that Apple will continue to fight on.

LG Escape2 for AT&T with Android 5.0 now available

Posted: 18 May 2015 08:03 AM PDT

In some lucky regions across the globe, LG's latest flagship, the G4, will begin arriving on store shelves for those excited to get their hands on it. Some areas are still waiting, though, and for anyone that might be tempted by another Lollipop-powered smartphone, but not want want to pay as much, AT&T subscribers have a new option.

The big blue carrier recently launched the Escape2, a modest follow-up to the Escape. This particular handset boasts 4.7-inch 1280×720 IPS display, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor under the hood clocked at 1.2GHz. There's an 8MP camera on the back, with a 1.3MP front-facing shooter on the other side. It's got 8GB of built-in storage, but a microSD card slot for anyone that might need more. It also has a slight curve to it, and LG also included the volume rocker and power button on the rear panel, just like on the G4.

The battery is a removable 2100mAh option, and it has 1GB of RAM.

With AT&T Next 12, subscribers can pick up the Escape2 with $0 down and 20 monthly installments of $9. On Next 18 and Next 24, it's 24 monthly installments of $7.50 or 30 monthly installments of $6, respectively. The full retail price is marked at $179.99, or it can be picked up for $0.99 on a new, two-year contract.

LG G4 will launch this week

Posted: 17 May 2015 08:18 PM PDT

The flagship Android battle is about to get a bit more competitive.

The LG G4 is launching this week. The rollout will begin in Hong Kong, followed by releases in Turkey, Russia, and Singapore. LG says that there are around 180 carriers and retailers that plan to offer the G4 and that eventually the device will be available in "most of Europe, North America, CIS, Southeast Asia, Middle East/Africa, and South/Central America."

When it comes to you U.S. folk, well, you've still got a few weeks to wait for the LG G4. LG has confirmed that the G4 will launch on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon, but so far all we know is that Sprint and U.S. Cellular will begin sales in June. Now that LG has kicked off the G4's rollout, here's to hoping that we hear more launch details from other carriers soon.

The G4 is LG's latest flagship smartphone, offering a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 IPS Quantum display, Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. One of the highlights of the G4 is its camera, which is a 16-megapixel snapper with an f/2.4 aperture, optical image stabilization, Laser Auto Focus, and a Color Spectrum Sensor that can recognize colors and objects in your shots. Rounding out the G4's spec list is an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, removable 3000mAh battery, and microSD slot.

Not only does the G4 pack some high-end specs, but it's got a removable battery and microSD slot, both of which are becoming harder to find in the smartphone world. With those features, LG is aiming to get the attention of the hardcore mobile user with the G4. LG's also working to court the mainstream consumer, though, giving the G4 a high-quality camera and large, high-res display. Now that the G4 is starting to roll out globally, it'll be interesting to see how well it sells compared to the Galaxy S6 and One M9.

Galaxy S6 in Blue Topaz and Green Emerald S6 edge join the lineup

Posted: 17 May 2015 07:36 PM PDT

While it isn't the panoply of color and texture options offered by Motorola, let it not be said that Samsung denies its customers options. The current White Pearl, Black Sapphire and Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge options are being bolstered by one for each device.

The Galaxy S6 picks up Blue Topaz, which Samsung describes as a "vibrant, expressive and distinctive color," and I would be hard pressed to argue with them. It's certainly going to stand out from the crowd, so it's definitely worth considering if you like to draw attention to your phone. Samsung even brought in a psychologist to weigh in on the Blue Topaz color, and she believes this color will attract consumers that are "self-confident, fastidious, discriminating, sensitive, exacting, and intuitive," so I guess if that's you, head out and pick one up immediately.

The new option for the Galaxy S6 edge is no less bold: Green Emerald looks like it was hijacked from the land of Oz. The psychologist diagnosed future Green Emerald owners as "balanced, loyal, hard-working, honest, benevolent and concerned for others," so go ahead and buy one before you hurt her feelings.

While we know the new colors are launching now, we are following up with Samsung on the exact where and when they'll be available.

Were any of you waiting for one of these more conspicuous color choices before making your Galaxy S6 purchase?
