Bloomberg: Google Is Ready To Announce New Photo Service Independent From Google+

Posted: 19 May 2015 02:50 PM PDT

nexusae0_Google-Photos-icon-logo_thumb.pngA new report from Bloomberg claims that Google is in the final stages of prepping its new online photo tool, which has been rumored for months. Importantly, this tool would not be built into the Google+ website or app as the current Photos client is. Let's skip the part where we predict the downfall of Google+ and talk about what this really means.

The new Google Photos will apparently have better integration with services like Twitter and Facebook, though I'm sure Google+ will be in the mix too.

[Google And Twitter Sitting In A Tree] You Can Now View Tweets Among Search Results In The Google Search App And On The Mobile Web

Posted: 19 May 2015 12:51 PM PDT

Twitter-ThumbGoogle and Twitter have rekindled their relationship, and that means users can now view tweets inside the Google Search app. Messages appear among results in a carousel, similar to images. The feature is live today for people searching in English across the US on Android, iOS, or the web. Desktop compatibility is still in the works, along with support for other countries.

The two companies were friends between 2009 and 2011, when they made a deal where Twitter automatically provided its stream of data to Google.

This Is Google Maps For Android Wear Running On A Watch Urbane

Yep, Maps for Android Wear, it's happening! A few of you have already spotted the icon in your Wear launchers if you're running the new Maps 9.9 APK, but with a little help from the latest Google Play Services Package (I used this one), I was able to get Maps for Android Wear fully up and running... mostly.

It's super-duper crashy and certain things just don't work sometimes, like nearby places.

Instagram's New 'Layout' App Offers Yet Another Way To Crop And Arrange Photo Collages

Posted: 19 May 2015 12:51 PM PDT

lIf a picture is worth a thousand words, then multiple pictures smushed together into the same square-cropped Instagram post must be like a freaking novel. Or a short story at least. The new Layout app from Instagram lets you easily create that sort of photo collage from your gallery, or take new snapshots on the spot. It's aimed at Instagram users, but you can do whatever you want with the images.

The app displays photos already on your device arranged in three ways—recent, faces (as detected by the app), and the full gallery list.

Layout from Instagram now available for Android

Posted: 19 May 2015 12:47 PM PDT

In late March, a new Instagram-branded app called Layout was introduced and subsequently launched on iOS. It was never a secret that Layout was coming to Android, though, and now the app is available for downloading pleasure.

With Layout, it's easier than ever to create quick collages with images that are already stored on your device. Layout users can select up to eight different images to use, pick a set grid, and then do a few more tweaks to create the perfect creation. After the collage is made, users can upload it to Instagram directly or to one of their other favorite social networks.

Layout is free and it's available now. What do you think? Are you in need of another photography app?

Google now displaying relevant tweets in your search results

Posted: 19 May 2015 12:17 PM PDT

Twitter is a place that many people go to share news, opinions, and more, and starting today you won't even need to go to Twitter to get that info.

Google is now inserting Twitter tweets into its mobile search results. The feature is rolling out first to the Google app for Android as well as mobile browsers on phones and tablets. It's only going to be in English initially, but Google says that it's working on adding more languages as well as desktop support.

googletwittersearchresultssmall

While these tweets will take up a bit of space in your Google search results, often times they can provide you with information that you won't get from a regular source, or at least they'll give you relevant info without making you jump to a web page. Because of this, we'd say that these tweets that are being injected into Google search results are pretty helpful.

Deal: Pair a Moto 360 with a Moto G (2014) for just $299

Posted: 19 May 2015 11:34 AM PDT

Motorola seems to be perpetually running some kind of deal on at least one of its devices, and for just the next two hours, the spotlight is on both the second generation Moto G and the Moto 360.

If you happen to be in the market for both a new budget smartphone and a smartwatch, or if you can team up with someone else that needs the other half of that equation, then you can save up to $129 on this duo.

The Moto G (2014) remains easily my favorite budget smartphone to date as long as you can get by without LTE. The feel of the device is fantastic, very reminiscent of the first Moto X, and the ability to swap out the back is a fun touch. The front-facing speakers are unmatched by anything in this price range, and while a 1080p screen would be nice, it's far from a deal breaker at the 5-inch screen size for me.

The Moto 360 remains on my wrist everyday and will be among the few first generation smartwatches to receive the full features of the upcoming Android Wear update. As long as the "flat tire" look doesn't bother you, this smartwatch is still one of the best looking options out there, and buying direct through Motorola you get to use Moto Maker and customize it as you will.

All in all this is a solid deal for the right buyer, just remember you only have until 3 p.m. Central time today to take advantage.

Opera Mini Update Adds Night Mode, Page Titles In The Address Bar, And Speed Dial/Open Tab Syncing

Posted: 19 May 2015 10:51 AM PDT

unnamedEverything is better with a night mode. Android apps. Dimmer switches. Enthusiast tech blogs. Fast food drive-through menus. Taking this irrefutable and universal fact and applying it to the feature-rich Opera Mini browser is a no-brainer, so that's exactly what the developers did. But don't get too excited: the new Night Mode doesn't affect the colors or layout of web pages, as some other apps do. Nope, it's just custom brightness settings and a slightly yellow color filter if you enable the "reduce eye strain" setting.

Samsung Flow now available as a beta from Google Play

Posted: 19 May 2015 10:03 AM PDT

Back at Samsung's Developers Conference in 2014, the company unveiled FLOW, a way for Samsung device owners to quickly and seamlessly transfer whatever they might be working on on one Samsung device to another one. Now, several months later, the app is finally available as a beta product through Google Play.

As one can imagine, this new app is built specifically for Samsung devices, so (for now, anyway) you'll have to own one of the supported devices to take advantage of the app. If you do, then you'll be able to use the built-in Android Share option to seamlessly transfer what you're working on to another Samsung device. So if you're writing something up or checking numbers on your Galaxy S6 edge and want a bigger screen to make some changes, you can transfer it right to your Galaxy Tab S.

Here's the list of supported devices:

  • Galaxy S5
  • Galaxy S6
  • Galaxy S6 edge
  • Galaxy Alpha
  • Galaxy Note 4
  • Galaxy Note Edge
  • Galaxy Tab S

Do you have a supported device, and do you plan on checking this out?

[RealSomething] RealPlayer Cloud Suddenly Becomes A Cloud-Based Photo/Video Manager Called RealTimes

Posted: 19 May 2015 09:51 AM PDT

rRealNetworks has struggled to make the transition to mobile, but it's not for lack of trying. There was a regular RealPlayer app, but that didn't get traction. Then there was RealPlayer Cloud, which had some potential. Now with a wave of its magic wand, RealNetworks has transformed RealPlayer Cloud into RealTimes. It's a photo/video manager with online sharing and remixing features.

RealPlayer Cloud was basically an online storage bucket for all your video files, which could be streamed to any of your devices. RealTimes is more personal, I suppose.

And Motorola recently reaffirmed that it's still hard at work on the Turbo's Android 5.1 update, so don't fret too much, existing Turbo owners. Your Lollipop is coming.

YotaPhone 2 gets closer to North American launch with new Indiegogo campaign

Posted: 19 May 2015 06:11 AM PDT

Yota Devices said earlier this year that the YotaPhone 2 would be coming to the North America, and now the dual-screened device is finally available for purchase.

The YotaPhone 2 is available for purchase starting today via an Indiegogo campaign. Interested consumers that are also quick on the click can snag a YotaPhone 2 for $500 — $100 off the MSRP — as well as a three-month BookMate subscription and a bumper case. The phone will be available in both black and white variants. In addition to the YotaPhone 2 itself, this Indiegogo campaign will offer a Yota Wireless Power Bank for $50. The Indiegogo campaign will run for 60 days, and its $50,000 goal is meant to help fund the certifications and fees necessary for the device to launch in North America. Yota Devices says that it aims to ship units out Indiegogo backers in early August ahead of the YotaPhone 2′s full North American launch.

The main draw of the YotaPhone 2 is its dual-screen setup that includes a 5-inch 1920×1080 AMOLED display and a 4.7-inch 960×540 E-Paper screen. The phone's also got an 8-megapixel camera on its rear and a 2.1-megapixel snapper on its face. Packed inside of the YotaPhone 2's 8.95mm-thick body lives a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 4G LTE, a 2500mAh battery, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 support. Also included is Android 5.0 and features like YotaFitness, YotaRemote, and YotaNotes.

The original YotaPhone never saw a very wide release, so it's nice to see the newer model is spreading to the U.S. and Canada. What's more, the YotaPhone 2 will launch in North America with Android 5.0 out of the gate, so buyers will immediately get to try out the better camera and responsiveness improvements that came with Lollipop.

Are you going to order a YotaPhone 2?

LG G4 Stylus, LG G4c have removable batteries and microSD slots just like the G4 proper

Posted: 18 May 2015 08:26 PM PDT

Just as the LG G4 is preparing to make its retail debut, LG has introduced two variants of its flagship Android smartphone.

The LG G4 Stylus and LG G4c are now officially official. While they share the same basic design as the G4, they've each got a special feature to make them unique. As you might've guessed, the LG G4 Stylus comes equipped with its own pen — a Rubberdium stylus, to be precise — that you can use to draw on its 5.7-inch screen. Meanwhile, the LG G4c is a smaller phone with a 5-inch display that's aimed at folks that prioritize one-handed use.

Here's the full rundown on what makes these siblings of the G4 tick:

LG G4 Stylus

  • 5.7-inch 1280×720 display
  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor (LTE), 1.4GHz octa-core processor (3G)
  • 13-megapixel rear camera (LTE), 8-megapixel rear camera (3G)
  • 5-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of storage
  • microSD slot
  • Removable 3000mAh battery
  • 3G or LTE connectivity
  • Laser Auto Focus, Gesture Shot, Glance View, Knock Code
  • Android 5.0

lgg4caam

LG G4c

  • 5-inch 1280×720 screen
  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor
  • 8-megapixel rear camera
  • 5-megapixel front-facing shooter
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of ROM
  • microSD slot
  • Removable 2540mAh battery
  • LTE connectivity
  • Gesture Shot, Glance View, Knock Code
  • Android 5.0

The LG G4 Stylus and LG G4c will begin rolling out to "key strategic markets" in the coming weeks. One other detail that's worth mentioning is that the G4 Stylus is the same phone as the G Stylo that's already been announced for the U.S. and Korea.

In addition to sharing the G4's design, there are two other features that the G4 Stylus and G4c include that make them noteworthy: a removable rear battery and a microSD slot. Those features are becoming increasingly rare in the smartphone market, and while neither the G4 Stylus nor the G4c are particularly high-end, those two features will help them to stand out in the crowded battle that is the affordable mobile market.
