Is LG Prepping A Smaller G4 Compact?

Posted: 02 May 2015 03:12 PM PDT

LG_G4_teaser2

The LG G4 has barely had a moment to embrace the spotlight and already there is rumour of a variant of LG's latest flagship.  A device by the name of LG G4C (model number LGH525N) recently surfaced on a Dutch retailer's website and it has many people wondering what it is.

The device carries a much lower price tag (€295 or $400 CAD) than the original G4 (€650 or $890 CAD) so it's definitely not going to be as highly spec'd but that still doesn't really tell us what it will be.  To me, there are two possibilities.  The first is that the "C" stands for compact and that this LG G4C will be a smaller variant of the flagship that will likely pack mid-range specs.  With the exception of Sony, most manufacturers tend to greatly mute the overall processing power of their "mini" flagships.

The other possibility  that comes to mind is that the G4C will be like the iPhone 5C.  Similar size as the original but, again, lesser specs and likely cheaper build materials.  Again, these are just my hypotheses but I feel like they're strong possibilities.

We also need to take this whole thing with a grain of salt as this is the first we've heard of a G4C but if the original website has their information in line, we won't have to wait long to see it as it has a listed launch date of May 12.

[APK Teardown] Play Music v5.9 Hints At Smarter Way To Handle Multiple Devices Users On The Same Chromecast

Music-Teardown

Update Wednesday came and went this week, leaving us with about a dozen new and updated apps. Project Fi and Google Connectivity Services were added to the Play Store in preparation for Google's first MVNO customers, and new versions were rolled out to bring Quick Reply to Messenger and prepare Google+ for the wide release of Collections. A small bump to Google Play Music also made the list, but there wasn't much in the way of visible changes.

Sense 7.0 Will Come To The M8 This August

Posted: 02 May 2015 12:49 PM PDT

HTC M8

Since it's reboot a few years back, HTC's Sense UI has become one of my favourite OEM skins (though I still prefer stock) and with each new flagship comes a new version of Sense.  The HTC One M9 brought with it the latest version of Sense, Sense 7.0, but it seems it'll be a while before any former flagships get a taste of HTC's latest and greatest UI.

As you can see in the above Tweet, HTC doesn't expect their former flagship, the M8, to receive Sense 7 until August of this year.  Although the M8 is running one of the latest versions of Android, Lollipop, it's still stuck on the older Sense 6.  It's a bit disappointing that there's such a delay for M8 users especially since HTC has been so good with rolling out updates over the past couple of years.

As for M7 users, chances are that your phone won't be getting many more updates as it has technically passed HTC's promised 2 year mark for updates.  That's not to say that it won't ever happen but it is unlikely.

[APK Download] Google Shopping Express Goes Material For Version 3.0

Posted: 02 May 2015 11:10 AM PDT

unnamedBefore we go any further: Google's local delivery service Shopping Express is still limited to portions of the San Francisco bay area, Los Angeles, northern California, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, and New York City. If you live outside of those areas, go ahead and skip this story, because Google Shopping Express (and similar competing services) aren't expanding outside of the densest US urban zones anytime soon. But for those who do qualify for the service, version 3.0 includes a new user interface.

HTC One mini 2 not scheduled to get Android 5.0 update

Posted: 02 May 2015 08:32 AM PDT

We haven't heard much about the HTC One mini 2 since its debut in mid-2014. That's changing today, but unfortunately, the news isn't good.

HTC has confirmed that the One mini 2 won't be updated to Android 5.0. The company told one Twitter user that the miniaturized version of the One M8 won't get Lollipop because it "will not provide an optimal experience."

It's always a bummer to hear that a phone won't receive a major OS update, but that's especially true in this instance since the HTC One mini 2 is only one year old. HTC didn't elaborate on how the One mini 2's Lollipop experience isn't "optimal," but it may have had something to do with the Lollipop-powered Sense software and the phone's combination of a Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM. Whatever the case, we're betting that today's news has put a damper on the weekends of One mini 2 owners.

Grooveshark Closes Up Shop For Good After Long Fade Into Obscurity, Legal Mess

What was once a pretty popular service both in its web interface and its Android app, Grooveshark, is calling it quits. This isn't a big surprise, because its claim to fame was essentially that they disregarded the legal requirement that the service get the rights to music that users streamed and uploaded. Most recently in the news for having their app's Chromecast support revoked, Grooveshark hasn't been in the Play Store since 2012.

HTC One M9 Camera Now Supports RAW Files

Posted: 01 May 2015 04:04 PM PDT

htc-one-m9-hero-bg

In many ways HTC made the right move by ditching the UltraPixel camera found in the M7 and M8 in favour of the 20MP shooter they packed into the M9 but despite the high megapixel count, HTC's camera is still lagging behind the competition.  While they can't go in and change the hardware, HTC has been tweaking the software as they have already released an update that improved the camera's capabilities a fair amount.  Now they have another little treat in store for M9 users looking to capture a better shot.

Earlier today HTC released a software update to the HTC Camera app found on the M9.  The main addition found in the update is the ability to shoot RAW files.  While your every day snapper may not know or care about the addition, camera aficionados will definitely appreciate the added file format.

Here Are LG’s First G4 Ads

Posted: 01 May 2015 03:49 PM PDT

LG is expecting big things from their latest flagship device, the G4, as they expect to sell over 12 million devices.  While the device itself is a solid contender for sure, what really makes a difference in this day and age is marketing.  Good ads can boost sales while bad ads (looking at you HTC!) can have the opposite effect.  Here are the first 4 ads that LG will begin running as we near the launch of the device.

The first two clips showcase two of the major highlights of the device, the camera and the display.  The second two showcase LG's new leather backs which, while not overly impressive on a spec sheet, may win over some potential buyers looking for premium materials.

All in all, they're decent ads but LG still has a tough battle ahead of them.  What do you guys think of the G4?
