Limited edition Android Live Cases are here, starting with a special Skrillex edition

Posted: 20 May 2015 02:48 PM PDT

Google has announced today a new series of accessories for Android devices being sold directly in the Google Store that take phone cases to an entirely new level. Limited edition Live Cases are here, and Skrillex is helping to launch them.

Priced at $40, Google's Live Cases are phone cases made in collaboration with artists who want to bring something new to the normal, boring plastic shells we too frequently wrap our phones in. Available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Note 4 in three different designs, each case comes with an embedded NFC chip that connects to your phone to unlock special content. The content includes a live wallpaper and "early access to a free OWSLA album from Google Play and Skrillex updates."

Perhaps the coolest part about the case is that is also comes with "a shortcut button built-in on the Live Case gives you one-touch access to Skrillex's music feed on YouTube. The button can also be customized to open your favorite apps, launch your phone camera or go to Skrillex's website." We should also mention the live wallpaper is no regular live wallpaper. It changes from day to night, and features photographs taken from a satellite launched by Skrillex himself, named after the artist's dog. Once the satellite is done doing its thing, it will be autographed and sent to one lucky winner.

For $40, you get quite a lot. If nothing else, the customizable button and free album are worth it if you're a fan of Skrillex. Who knows what other kind of custom content you'll receive in the future, or what other kinds of Live Cases Google has in the works.

Verizon test engineer spills the beans on Motorola and updates

Posted: 20 May 2015 02:42 PM PDT

In a couple of Google+ posts today (that have since been deleted), a Verizon test engineer took to the social network to speak out on Verizon, Motorola and the manufacturer's Lollipop updates.

Jose Arturo, who works for Verizon, has said that Lollipop for the Droid Turbo is still at least a couple weeks away, but it is nearing the final stages of production. According to Arturo, the reason why the update is lagging behind on Verizon has to do with Motorola's budget when it comes to testing software. Apparently, because of Verizon's HD voice service and XLTE, there are a lot of changes being made with modems on the software side right now. Something Motorola is using a limited budget to deal with.

In previous posts on Google+, Arturo mentioned that a new phone from Motorola coming to Verizon will feature a front-facing flash for selfies and the addition of a Micro SD card slot. If he's right, he could be talking about the new Moto X expected to launch sometime late this summer. The fact the all the posts mentioning today's information have been deleted is a sign that he just might be telling the truth. Or that he got in trouble for spreading misinformation. We suppose either scenario is likely.

The limited-edition Skrillex Live Case: Built for fans. Made for Android.

Posted: 20 May 2015 02:06 PM PDT

We spend a lot of time with our phones every day. They're essential to how we communicate and for many users, an extension of our style. We think that means your phone — and its accessories — deserve to be as interesting as you are. So we decided to seek out some of the world's top artists to make that happen.

Enter Editions, a series of creative collaborations to develop limited-edition cases for Android phones. We are kicking off the series with Grammy-winning producer, Skrillex, who has created three unique designs inspired by his lifelong fascination with space. The Skrillex Live Case connects to your phone to bring you VIP access to Skrillex content and a companion live wallpaper that extends its design onto the screen.
From Skrillex's satellite to your screen

The companion live wallpaper updates over the course of the day showing stunning images of Earth shot from the stratosphere. At night, it changes to display constellations visible from your current location.

To capture the Earth images, Google and Skrillex launched a custom-designed balloon satellite named after Skrillex's dog, Nanou. Once Nanou's photographic mission is complete, a lucky fan will win the autographed satellite in an upcoming giveaway. Follow @Android on Twitter for more details.
In a short documentary about the project, we join Skrillex in Downtown LA to hear him talk for the first time about the origins of his fascination with space. We also travel deep into the Nevada desert to launch his satellite into the stratosphere.

VIP access to Skrillex content

Fans who get the Live Case will get early access to a free OWSLA album from Google Play and Skrillex updates sent directly to their phones. A shortcut button built-in on the Live Case gives you one-touch access to Skrillex's music feed on YouTube. The button can also be customized to open your favorite apps, launch your phone camera or go to Skrillex's website.

Exclusively on the Google Store

The limited-edition Skrillex Live Case is individually numbered and available for Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Get yours at the Google Store today through the end of June while supplies last. Stay tuned for the next collaboration. We can't wait to tell you all about it.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory Releases Moon Tours App To Satiate Your Lunar Curiosity

Posted: 20 May 2015 01:59 PM PDT

MoonTours-ThumbI imagine for the folks at NASA, the Moon has become kind of boring. The organization has been launching stuff at that floating rock since the 60s. It has sent rockets, people, and unmanned probes. And that doesn't even count the work others around the world have contributed to our understanding on the satellite. People have been staring up at that thing for as long as we've been a species.

Needless to say, quite a bit of information about the Moon has surfaced in that time.

Skiing Yeti Mountain Is A Casual Downhill Skiing Adventure With Yetis That Eat People

Posted: 20 May 2015 12:56 PM PDT

sIf a mountain is infested with Yetis, you should probably ski someplace else. Even one Yeti is probably too many. Still, everyone is hitting the slopes in Skiing Yeti Mountain. This game has hundreds of courses to tear up and an undisclosed number of Yetis to avoid.

The premise of this game probably sounds similar to the classic SkiFree game on Windows. This is a much more fleshed out game, though. Each course has a number of gates spread out on the snow with cliffs and trees in your way.

Android Developer Story: Wooga’s fast iterations on Android and Google Play

Posted: 20 May 2015 11:08 AM PDT

In order to make the best possible games, Wooga works on roughly 40 concepts and prototypes per year, out of which 10 go into production, around seven soft launch, and only two make it to global launch. It's what they call "the hit filter." For their latest title, Agent Alice, they follow up with new episodes every week to maintain player interest and engagement over time.

The ability to quickly iterate both live and under development games is therefore key to Wooga's business model — Android and Google Play provide them the tools they need and mean that new features and updates are made on Android first, before they get to other platforms.

Find out more from Sebastian Kriese, Head of Partnerships, and Pal Tamas Feher, Head of Engineering, and learn how the iteration features of Android and Google Play have contributed to successes such as Diamond Dash, Jelly Splash, and Agent Alice.

You can find out more about building successful games businesses on Android and Google Play at Google I/O 2015: in person, on the live stream, or session recordings after the event. Check out the following:
