Sony Xperia Z4 Compact To Be Unveiled May 13?

Posted: 06 May 2015 03:33 PM PDT

Sony Xperia Logo

Well it looks like we may have a release date for the pint sized Z4 variant.  According to Russian tech site mobiltelefon.ru, the Sony Xperia Z4 Compact will be unveiled on May 13, which is just a week away.  While they didn't have any specs to divulge, chances are it'll share the same internals as its larger sibling.  That means we should expect to see a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, a 20.7MP camera, and a 5.1 MP front facing camera.  The screen size will likely remain in the mid 4″ range and the battery size will undoubtedly be smaller than the 2930 mAh pack in the Z4.

Even if the Z4 Compact is unveiled on the 13th, we still have no idea when we might see it here in Canada.  The Z4 is currently only being sold in Japan so I wouldn't be surprised if the Z4 Compact received similar treatment.  I'm a little confused as to what Sony's strategy is right now but perhaps rumours of a new flagship line will pan out and Sony will bring us some mind-blowing new phone later this year.  Guess we just have to wait and see.

Qualcomm speaks out about Snapdragon 810 overheating rumors

Posted: 06 May 2015 03:01 PM PDT

You've probably heard of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 overheating rumors. Samsung shipped its latest flagship, the Galaxy S6, with a homegrown Exynos processor internationally, the first time it had done so since the Galaxy S II. The company pinned the reason on preliminary testing of the Snapdragon 810 revealing overheating issues, which is allegedly the reason for not using it. Despite this, Samsung claims to continue to be partners with Qualcomm.

Next, testing of multiple devices showed that a pre-production HTC One M9 ran much hotter than other devices, being up around 17 degrees Celsius and much hotter on the heat map. While Samsung could have claimed anything they wanted, this was further evidence to support Samsung's claims. But Qualcomm's vice president of marketing Tim McDonough insists that the rumors aren't true.

He claims that the reports of Snapdragon 810 overheating are false, but that's how "business is done." It seems that he is implying that Samsung put those rumors out there to hype its own new Exynos processor more than bash the Snapdragon 810. And with 810-powered devices on the market, there don't seem to be any lingering heat issues. It might have been a pre-production issue, but it looks to be long sorted out.

As much as it's unpleasant that potentially false rumors are being spread about Qualcomm, some good competition from Samsung is always a positive thing. With the Galaxy S6 selling really well, Qualcomm no longer dominates the mobile processor business. Hopefully that means both companies will work hard to push out some amazing chips in the future.

Samsung using two different camera sensors in Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Posted: 06 May 2015 02:01 PM PDT

You may have heard of Sony's camera sensor demand exceeding supply, forcing many smaller manufacturers to look elsewhere for sensors. Even HTC, a big player in the smartphone game, went for Toshiba camera sensors for an unknown reason. Well it seems that event he big manufacturers are getting hit harder than expected.

The new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge were thought to use Sony camera sensors, but that's only half the truth. Apparently Samsung decided to use a mix of Sony and its own ISOCELL sensors in the devices, with no correlation between model or build date to sensor model. But thankfully, people should not be worried.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge utilize camera sensors from several different vendors. Like all of the technology used in our products, they meet our strict global quality and performance standards.Samsung

Samsung claims that the sensors are quality tested and will perform the same. And in testing by SamMobile, that is indeed the case. The two sensors perform nearly equally, with both performing excellently. So if you're in the market for a Galaxy S6 or S6 edge, you don't have to worry about which sensor you're getting.

‘Android M’ referenced in Google I/O 2015 conference schedule

Posted: 06 May 2015 11:41 AM PDT

While Android L (Lollipop) is still making the rounds to devices, expectations for what's next are high with Google I/O right around the corner.

Android M

Thanks to the conference scheduling of this year's event going live, a few keen eyes took note of something quite interesting. Within the "Android at Work" conference, "Android M" is explicitly listed within the description of the conference. Specifically, it looks like the next version of Google's mobile operating system will be focused on the workplace. Or, all the work places:

"Android M is bringing the power of Android to all kinds of workplaces."

Unfortunately, at the time of publication, Google has pulled the reference as well as the entire Android at Work conference scheduling.

Last year, Google unveiled Android Lollipop and so it's no surprise that the company would have another version of the mobile OS ready to get shown off this year.

Exercise or Games? Why Not Both!

Posted: 06 May 2015 11:19 AM PDT

Posted by Alice Ching, Google Engineer

We are pleased to announce the release of Games in Motion, an open source game sample to demonstrate how developers can make fun games using Google Fit and Android Wear. Do you ever go on a jog and feel like there is a lack of incentive to help you run better? What if you were a secret agent and had to use your speed and your nifty gadget to complete missions?

With Games in Motion, you can enhance your exercise with missions and actions on your Android Wear device, while logging your jogs to the cloud.

Games in Motion is written in Java programming language using Android Studio. It demonstrates multiple Android technologies.

  • Android Wear bridges notifications from a phone or tablet to a paired Android Wear device. The notifications are stacked so we can show multiple stats at the same time.
  • Google Fit API collects and processes fitness data and sessions. This allows us to use the fitness data to show user progress. All exercise sessions done in Games in Motion will be recorded to Google Fit as well.
  • Google Play Games Services is used to create and unlock achievements.
  • Several different Android audio APIs are integrated.
  • JUnit tests are present for the data-driven parser, which demonstrates how unit testing can be done within Android Studio.

You can download the latest open source release from GitHub. We hope to inspire similar Android games, where multiple different form factors are combined for a fun experience.

Xiaomi Mi Note Pro’s full spec list has been revealed, and it’s impressive

Posted: 06 May 2015 07:34 AM PDT

After Xiaomi teased the Mi Note Pro back in January, we knew that the device was a top-tier flagship smartphone. Now the Mi Note Pro's full spec list has been revealed, and in the process Xiaomi has reaffirmed the device's high-end status.

The Xiaomi Mi Note Pro features a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 Sharp/JDI display on its face with Sunlight Display tech that'll help to make the screen readable outdoors. Also on the front of the phone is a 4-megapixel camera with 2-micron pixels for good low-light performance. Meanwhile, the back of the Mi Note Pro houses a 13-megapixel camera with a Sony IMX214 sensor, 6-element f/2.0 lens, and optical image stabilization.

Packed inside of the Mi Note Pro's two slabs of glass — the front of which is 2.5D curved and the back is 3D curved — is an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor. Don't worry about those rumors about the chip overheating, though, because Xiaomi says that it's applied several thermal patents that keep the device cool. Alongside the Snapdragon 810 lives 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB of flash storage, 4G LTE, Hi-Fi audio, and a 3090mAh battery. With the Mi Note Pro's Quick Charge 2.0 tech, that battery can get a 70 percent charge in one hour.

Xiaomi says that the Mi Note Pro will go up for sale on mi.com on May 12 at a price of RMB 2999 ($483 USD). That's a pretty nice price for any Android flagship, but it's even better considering what you're getting in the Mi Note Pro. The bad news is that it's unlikely that the Mi Note Pro will be launched outside of China, meaning that most of us will have to drool over it from afar. If you do live in China, though, you've got a pretty impressive phone headed your way.

The Sony Xperia C4 has a 5-megapixel selfie camera and a 5.5-inch screen

Posted: 06 May 2015 06:17 AM PDT

Sony's latest smartphone is all about the selfie.

The Sony Xperia C4 is the latest in Sony's line of "PROselfie" smartphones, featuring a 5-megapixel camera with 25mm wide-angle lens, Exmor R for mobile sensor, LED flash, and HDR support. Sony's also thrown in its Superior Auto shooting mode and SteadyShot technology on the software side, all of which will work together to produce some high-quality self photographs. All of those front-facing camera features doesn't mean that Sony's neglected the C4's rear camera, though, because the phone's got a 13-megapixel shooter with LED flash and HDR.

sonyxperiac4black

Packed inside the Xperia C4's 7.9mm-thick OmniBalance shell is a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 IPS display, 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek MTK6752 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 2600mAh battery, and it'll be offered in single and dual SIM versions. The C4 is powered by Android 5.0 and will be available in white, black, and mint color options.

Sony says that the Xperia C4 will be available in "select markets" starting in June 2015. There's no word yet on how much you'll have to pay to make the C4 your new selfie machine, but it could be an affordable alternative to the Xperia Z4. The Xperia C4's not quite as high-end as the Z4, but it does have an octa-core processor, large and high-res screen, and a design similar to Sony's flagship.

What do you think of Sony's new Xperia C4?

Motorola appears set to begin pushing Android 5.1 to Moto X

Posted: 05 May 2015 07:45 PM PDT

Good news, Moto X owners: It looks like Motorola is getting ready to begin pushing Android 5.1 updates to its flagship Android phones.

Motorola has posted changelogs for the Android 5.1 updates for both the AT&T and T-Mobile/unlocked versions of the Moto X (2nd Gen.) as well as the Moto X (1st Gen.). According to Motorola, Moto X (2nd Gen.) owners will get the ability to swipe away heads-up notifications, the ability to change Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections from Quick Settings, Device Protection, and faster app launch times thanks to improvements in ART.

Meanwhile, owners of the original Moto X will gain Screen Pinning, the same Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection options in Quick Settings, lots of Moto app tweaks, Materal Design UI changes, and more. Considering that the Moto X (1st Gen.) never got updated to Android 5.0, it's no surprise to see its Android 5.1 update have such a large changelog.

Motorola hasn't made any announcements about when it'll begin pushing Android 5.1 to its Moto X models, but now that the changelogs are live, we're willing to bet that the OTAs aren't far off. After all, Motorola has been pretty on the ball with its Android updates in the past. If you've got a Moto X, be sure to let us know if Android 5.1 hits your device!

Google begins sending Project Fi invitations

Posted: 05 May 2015 06:46 PM PDT

Almost two weeks after Project Fi was officially announced, invitations for the new service have started to go out.

A Reddit user with the name "idreamincode" received an invitation to Project Fi and posted screenshots of the registration process so that we can live vicariously through them. Overall there's nothing too surprising about the entire thing, but there is some important information for any Google Voice users out there.

The images show that when signing up, existing Google Voice users can either bring their GV number to Project Fi or use a different number. If they choose the latter option, their Google Voice number will be released when you activate Project Fi service. Some features of Google Voice will carry over to Project Fi, including your GV credit, call forwarding, voicemails, and texts, but features like making and receiving calls with Google Voice, Talk, and Obihai won't carry over.

Any existing Google Voice users will have a tough choice to make if they want to sign up for Project Fi. They can either carry their GV number to Fi and lose some existing functionality or use a different number and release their GV number. That may be a tough choice for some, but at least we know about the Project Fi registration process as the invitations begin going out.

How many of you use Google Voice?

Moto X 3rd Gen Specs Leaked!!

Posted: 05 May 2015 04:49 PM PDT

Moto X 3rd Gen

We've already seen the 2015 flagships from Samsung, LG, HTC, and Sony (kind of) which means Motorola is the only major manufacturer that still has its flagship under wraps.  Well it looks like the secret is out as a full spec list of the Moto X 3rd Gen leaked earlier today!

As you can see from the above picture, the Moto X 3rd Gen will feature a 5.2″ QHD AMOLED display, Snapdragon 808 processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB or 64GB internal storage (probably non expandable), 16MP camera, 5MP front facing camera, and 3280 mAh battery.  Just like that, Motorola has basically addressed every complaint that reviewers had with the 2nd Gen with the new massive battery and super high res display.  The 4GB of RAM is a wonderful addition and while the choice to go with the Snapdragon 808 over the 810 may seem like a disappointment to some, I'm confident that the Moto X will still be just as fluid, if not more fluid, then any other device on the market.  Motorola has always married the hardware and software beautifully and I'm sure this guy will be no different.

Historically, the Moto X has d├ębuted in August/September so we likely still have a little bit to wait before we see this beast hit the market.  Nevertheless, I'm super excited to see what Motorola has brought to the table this year.
