LG’s Upcoming Nexus 5 Will Be Coming With Android Pay

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 02:49 PM PDT

Android Pay

We all know LG has been chosen to make one of two upcoming Nexus smartphones later this year and now a report indicates that when the phone launches and how it will be fine tuned for Google's next generation mobile payment system, known as Android Pay.

Business Korea reports that LG will launch the new Nexus 5 in October, which to me is no surprise at all given that all recent Nexus launches have been in October. They're also reporting that Android Pay will take advantage of the phone's rumoured fingerprint scanner and that they'll be bringing it to the European and North American market. The latter part is what interests me since the reason Google Wallet failed was because it was only available in the US.

The phone is expected to be coming with a 5 to 5.2-inch 1080p display, a 64-bit Snapdragon SoC, USB Type C and of course, Android M.

HBO Now finally came to Android recently after a few months of Apple exclusivity, but it lacked Chromecast support. That's not a problem anymore as of the new v1.1 update. HBO Now can beam video direct to the Chromecast, and there are a few other tweaks too.

Here's the chagelog for HBO Now v1.1.

  • Push Notifications
  • Chromecast Support
  • Performance Improvements

You may notice Android TV still isn't supported, but at least you can use those boxes as cast targets.

OnePlus 2 surpasses two million reservations in less than two weeks

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 09:40 AM PDT

However unconventional the OnePlus reservation system may be, it appears to be working for them yet again as they have crossed two million reservations for the OnePlus 2 in less than two weeks.

Flagship killer or not, that's a very respectable number, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt given that there is no guarantee how many of those tossing their hat in the ring for an invite are going to actually follow through when their time comes. That's particularly true if OnePlus can't deliver the phones at a considerably faster pace than last year as we head into the release of the Moto X Style and potentially multiple Nexus devices aimed at a very similar demographic as the OnePlus 2.

While the OnePlus 2 compromises sit well with some, they strip away one of the most highly touted features of the last year (quick charging), some features that appear ready to finally explode this year (NFC based payments) and the promise of USB Type-C falls short with the lack of support for faster charging and data transfer.

This upper mid-range class of devices seems to be hitting a sweet spot for a lot of consumers that are not willing to shell out several hundred dollars for a smartphone, but still crave something more than what the true budget devices have to offer and in that spirit I'm glad to see OnePlus experiencing success again as it will continue to put the pressure on others to deliver similar value to consumers.

Several apps are gaining Chromecast support, including HBO Now

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 09:07 AM PDT

Google's Chromecast is a great little invention and its popularity has done nothing but grow. More and more apps continue to support the handy little device and Google has put out a blog post announcing some new apps that support Chromecast. The most notable app of the bunch is HBO Now, HBO's available subscription streaming service that doesn't also require a subscription to HBO's cable service. For Chromecast users, watching Game of Thrones just got a little bit easier.

Other new apps include a couple games in the form of FitFlap and PhraseBlitz, as well as a mixed bag of others. Pixlr, the popular photo editing app, now includes support for editing on the big screen as well as viewing your photos. Watch Food Network and Watch Travel Channel add a slew of new shows available to cast onto our TV, and for children and the nostalgic among us, Pokemon TV now includes Chromecast support.

That's all for now, but more apps are constantly being updated to include Chromecast support, so keep watch over your favorites.

HTC is cutting jobs and axing select smartphones

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 08:44 AM PDT

The glory days of HTC are long gone and the company is continuing to struggle. Amid prolonged financial instability, the company has faced decreased sales even with its flagship smartphone, the HTC One M9. Now the company is cutting back even further, with plans to cut jobs "across the board." The company is also planning to discontinue certain models of devices in order to place more focus on its high-end division, where it feels it has a fighting chance.

The cuts will reportedly continue into the first quarter of next year, but analysts are predicting that the company will continue to struggle for at least the next four quarters. HTC stocks, sales and profits have tumbled in 2015, likely due to an unenthusiastic response to HTC's flagship One M9. HTC has been a major player since the early days of Android and we're rooting for the company as it works to get back on track. It would be a shame to see it collapse.

Spigen Shows Off Its Case Line Up For The S6 Edge+

Spigen has done it again.  Despite Samsung trying to keep their upcoming devices under wraps (although that ship sailed long ago), Spigen has outed the upcoming Galaxy S6 Edge+ as they have published their entire case line up for the device.

All of the case styles seen with the Note 5 are also available with the S6 Edge+ so you get a fair selection to choose from.  They don't currently have tempered glass screen protector for the device (very few manufacturers have actually made glass screen protectors for these curved devices) but perhaps they'll manufacture one down the road.

Huawei Nexus ‘Angler’ prototype with a fingerprint reader may have leaked in new video

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 08:36 AM PDT

Rumors of there being more than one Nexus-branded smartphone in any given year are not all that surprising anymore, so when stories surfaced that LG and Huawei had been tapped to create a Nexus smartphone for 2015, the echo chamber took over.

Since then, rumored specifications for the Huawei Nexus have managed to find their way online (and they certainly sound impressive enough), and even more talks about what a Huawei Nexus might look like and feature. That train continues rolling as a new video has been published by Steve Hemmerstoffer (@onleaks) that reportedly features the Huawei "Angler," which is reportedly the codename for the upcoming Nexus smartphone.

The video is short, but there's enough there to catch someone's attention at least. We can see a relatively large circular camera, as well as a pill-shaped flash next to it. Below the camera a shape that could indicate a fingerprint reader is also clearly visible. If the video is any indication, then the power/lock button is on the side of the handset, too.

Any other details that might be floating around out there aren't revealed by the photo, but at least for now it's a pretty straightforward look at the back of the device that could very well be (one of) the next Nexus-branded smartphone. Based on what you see here, and with rumors that it could boast a 5.7-inch display, is the Huawei Nexus something you hope comes to life?

Xperia Z5 And Z5 Compact Will Not Have USB Type-C Ports

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 08:08 AM PDT

Z5 & Z5 Compact USB

Another day and another leak of the Sony Xperia Z5 & Z5 Compact from Vizileaks.  It today's episode, the leakster provides us with a clear look at the charge ports on the upcoming devices.  As previously reported, Sony has not joined the USB Type-C party this time around as we get your more traditional microUSB port  on both devices.

While the lack of USB Type-C is a little disappointing, it's nice to see the covering flap on the USB port has been ditched once again.  The Z4/Z3+ was the first Sony Z device to ditch the flap and it seems like that that is now the norm.  While I can't say this with absolute certainty, chances are that like the Z4/Z3+ the phone will still remain water resistant despite the lack of covering flap.

I'm sure ViziLeaks will have more details to share with us in the coming days

Samsung Teases Three Devices For Unpacked Event

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 08:08 AM PDT

`

Samsung is back with another official teaser ahead of their Unpacked Event which is just over 7 days away.  This latest teaser is probably the most interesting one yet as it shows the silhouette of not one, note two, but three different devices.

We were the first to make them BIG.
Now we're making BIG even BETTER.

Are you ready to Live BIG?

Now based on what we've seen and heard so far, we know that one device is the Note 5 (the middle one) and the top device is likely the S6 Edge+.  But what is the bottom device?  Is it a new tablet perhaps?  Is it a new supersized phone?  Given their tag line of making things BIG, part of me thinks it's got to be some sort of supersized phone as a tablet that size is hardly big.  But then at the same time if that is a phone, that would be one REALLY BIG phone so I'm just not sure.

What do you guys think?

Is This The Huawei Nexus?!?!?

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 07:53 AM PDT

Well here's something exciting to get your Thursday morning going.  Steve Hemmerstoffer of Nowhereelse.fr may have just provided us with our first look at the Huawei made Nexus!  The above video was just posted and stars a mysterious new device that looks a lot like the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 but with some minor differences.  The camera and flash are definitely different than that found on the Mate 7 but the fingerprint reader looks very similar.  It's also hard to tell whether the device is indeed metal like the Mate 7.  It kind of looks like the same matte finish that is found on the Nexus 5 but it's really hard to tell in these pictures.   It does, however, appear to have a unibody design which does line up with the most recent rumour so it has that going for it.

Steve himself seems a little cautious about the leak so I would definitely take this one with a grain of salt.  Nevertheless I'm excited to see all these Nexus leaks pouring out and I can't wait for these guys to launch.
