NVIDIA recalling certain SHIELD Pros due to hard drive issues

Posted: 14 Sep 2015 02:41 PM PDT

It looks like NVIDIA is having some quality issues with the SHIELD Pro. The company says that it has found that less than 1 percent of all units sold have exhibited accelerated hard drive degradation, which causes issues with the user interface or just simple failure during an update.

If you update to the system software version 1.4 and it fails, you may have a bad unit. It also might cause heavy pixelation in the top row of the Android TV home screen. If you have these issues, head here to get your replacement. You won't even need to ship yours out and wait for it to arrive to get your replacement shipped out, because NVIDIA will ship a replacement immediately to minimize down time.

Fortunately, the standard 16GB flash models aren't affected. Have you had an issue with the NVIDIA SHIELD Pro? Let us know in the comments!

Russia finds Google guilty in alleged anti-competitive practices

Posted: 14 Sep 2015 01:51 PM PDT

Russia isn't exactly known as the beacon of fairness. So when Russia's anti-monopoly agency found Google was guilty of abusing its market position after a complaint by Russian search engine Yandex, I couldn't help but cringe.

Google was found guilty of competing with Yandex by pre-installing Google apps on Android devices. And why shouldn't it? It's Google's OS, it's only fair that Google installs its apps on the devices. Not only is that absolutely fair, it also helps the user, as those apps fit into the Google ecosystem Android is built on. Alternative apps are freely available on Google's own Play Store and are not blocked or hard to get to.

Yandex is actually more popular than Google in Russia, but competition has gotten strong. With the popularity of Android rising, it seems Yandex is worried about its position. No better time to complain to the government, right?

This kind of stuff isn't exclusive to Russia, of course: it happens everywhere. Microsoft was once sued for including Internet Explorer with Windows in multiple areas, being called anti-competitive for not including competing browsers with its own operating systems.

What are your thoughts on this issue? Is the Russian anti-monopoly agency in the right, or does Google have the right to bundle its apps with its operating system? Leave a comment!

Cyanogen working on integrating Cortana with Microsoft’s help

Posted: 14 Sep 2015 12:43 PM PDT

Microsoft's virtual assistant Cortana is awesome and all, but a lot of her potential is wasted due to lack of integration with Android. There's only so much a standalone app can do compared to Google Now on Android or Siri on iOS.

In a strange partnership, Cyanogen and Microsoft are working together to integrate Cortana into Cyanogen OS. This will give the virtual assistant plenty of power and resources to do everything she's designed to do, just like on Windows Phone. Though most people won't get to experience this, the custom ROM community and maybe the few phones that can officially run Cyanogen OS will reap the benefits.

Most people really wouldn't expect Microsoft to work with a company like Cyanogen, but it seems it's serious about the spread of Cortana. With Windows 10 being a free upgrade to every Windows 7 and 8 computer, Cortana might just become a big thing.

LG schedules event for October 1, new flagship rumored to star

Posted: 14 Sep 2015 11:28 AM PDT

Despite the fact that the Life's Good crew managed to launch one of the more better-equipped and popular Android handsets of 2015 with the G4, it looks like that might not be good enough.

According to CNET, LG has begun sending out invitations for an event scheduled for Thursday, October 1. The event is being held in New York City, but as the initial report indicates, just what LG has planned to announce isn't known at this point. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like the invite leaves any bread crumbs to follow, either.

Of course, there are rumors. It's believed that LG will officially debut a device that's been making the rounds on the Internet as of late, called the V10. That device is said to feature a secondary display along with plenty of high-end specifications under the hood.

What do you think LG is going to announce?

The SMS app that comes with new phones tends to suck in one way or another. Why is the interface so ugly? Bah, switching between conversations is so awkward. Samsung, what are you doing? Motorola, the old Messenging app no longer feels stock―it just feels old.

When you ask a friend for good alternatives, don't be surprised if you hear them mention EvolveSMS. Not only is the app pretty, the combination of using of the side panel to list conversations and swiping left or right to switch between them is just plain convenient.

As we all know, computer interfaces in the distant future will consist of small sections of text alongside unchanging blocks of lavender, orange, and pink. You don't need to wait any longer, though. The LCARS Android Wear Watch Face is here, and it's free. You might recall a different LCARS watch face last year, but that one was unpublished and this one is better anyway.

For the uninitiated, LCARS is the name given to the distinctive UI created for Star Trek: The Next Generation and carried on through the subsequent TV series and films.

HTC One A9 reportedly launching with Marshmallow and Sense 7

Posted: 14 Sep 2015 07:40 AM PDT

Plenty of rumors have pegged HTC as prepping to launch a new flagship by the end of the year, dubbed the HTC One A9. The move isn't terribly surprising, considering the lack of sales from the One M9 as well as HTC's new focus on flagship devices. Now leaker @LlabTooFeR has revealed that the One A9 will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box in addition to HTC's Sense 7 overlay.

While not shocking news, it does seem to confirm that the One A9 will launch after Android Marshmallow, and will likely be one of the first devices to ship with it out of the box. In the past, we've seen manufacturers launch phones with outdated versions of Android upon launch, so it's good to see HTC working to keep its phones up to date right from the get-go.

We'll keep you posted on any further developments regarding the HTC One A9.

I don't think we ever got past the third or fourth world on one run, but we did use the secret warp pipes to move to later worlds.
