Is Google Recycling Their Easter Egg For Marshmallow?

Posted: 08 Sep 2015 01:36 PM PDT

Marshmallow Flappy Bird

With each new iteration of Android we get a slew of new features and, of course, a new Easter Egg!  While Google hadn't really unveiled the Marshmallow Easter Egg yet the guys over on Android Police may have uncovered it but it's not really a knew one.

As you can see in the photo, Google may be recycling the Easter Egg that they built into Lollipop but with a Marshmallow-y twist.  If you don't know what we're talking about, jump into your settings and click about device.  In there, look for the Android Version Number and click it a bunch of times.  A circle should pop up which you can also click multiple time till you see a fully formed lollipop.  You can press and hold on that lollipop to initiate the Easter Egg game.

Now it seem a little out of character to me that Google would recycle their Easter Egg so don't put all your eggs in this basket (yup, I just did that) just yet.

Rumour: Sony Xperia Z5 Ultra On The Way As Well

Posted: 08 Sep 2015 01:17 PM PDT

Sony Xperia Z Logo

Sony has already unveiled their Xperia Z5 line up but according to a new rumour that line up is not yet complete. Well known leakster @leaksfly claims that Sony still has at least one more Z5 in the works, the Z5 Ultra.

According to the rumour, the Z5 Ultra will utilize the upcoming Snapdragon 820 processor paired with 4GB of RAM.  That combination should definitely keep things running super smooth on the rumoured 6.44″ 4K display.  That's right, Sony is expected to use the same 4K display technology that is found on the Z5 Premium.  A larger battery and improved camera are also expected to make their way onto the massive phablet.

So when will Sony's super phablet hit the market?  Well according to the tip, the Z5 Ultra will debut in March of 2016.  The time frame seems about right as we don't expect the Snapdragon 820 to be hitting many devices until late late 2015 or early 2016.

Google Express is one of those services that sound awesome on paper, but many of us still don't really know because it's only available in seven major metros that you could probably guess. Except now it isn't. Now it's also available in six states spread across the Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Google brought Express to Chicago roughly a year ago. Now the company is expanding the reach out to the surrounding area. It says this should open up the service to 25 million more people.

BLU intros the Pure XL with 6-inch Quad HD display and 24MP camera for $349

Posted: 08 Sep 2015 12:03 PM PDT

BLU has made quite the name for itself over the years by introducing plenty of low to mid-range Android devices that pack worthwhile specifications into a package that's not too hard on the wallet. That trend continues with the company's latest smartphone.

BLU has just introduced the Pure XL, a smartphone that boasts a Super AMOLED display that measures in at 6-inches and offers a resolution of 256×1440. Inside the unit, there's an octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor, which BLU says makes the Pure XL the first device to launch with this particular chipset in the United States. There's also 3GB of RAM, 64GB of built-in storage with a microSD card slot, and a battery that measures in at 3500mAh. It has 4G LTE connectivity, but it doesn't support T-Mobile's band 12 LTE.

As far as the camera systems go, BLU has included a 24-megapixel shooter on the back, which features an f/2.0 aperture, optical image stabilization, dual-LED flash, real-time HDR support, and phase detection autofocus. BLU also included what it calls Magic Focus, which will let owners alter the focus in photos after they've been taken. On the front, there's an 8MP camera.

The Pure XL also features stereo speakers with support for high-quality audio, and it rocks a metal unibody design. It's running Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, all for $349.99. It launches on September 29 by way of Amazon.

What do you think of BLU's Pure XL?

Latest Android distribution numbers show Lollipop’s steady growth

Posted: 08 Sep 2015 10:56 AM PDT

For those that like to keep tabs on Android's distribution, the Android Developers blog is more than happy to oblige by offering regular updates on that front. To help encapsulate the trend of Lollipop's adoption, Google's latest distribution numbers show Android 5.0 and 5.1′s steady growth.

The latest results show devices that checked into the Google Play Store over the 7-day period ending on September 7. With that in mind, both Android 5.0 and Android 5.1 saw increases in their percentage numbers, with the former at 15.9% and the latter positioned now at 5.1 percent. Compare that to the 15.5% that Android 5.0 registered on in August, and the 2.6 percent that Android 5.1 was tracking in the same month, Android's latest version saw the biggest bump in a month's time.

Android 4.4 KitKat is now registering on 39.2 percent of devices checking into the Play Store, which means that's actually down from the 39.3% that KitKat pulled in during the month of August. Meanwhile, Android 4.1 through Android 4.3 Jelly Bean came in at 31.8%, which is down from the 33.6% the Android Developers blog showed in August.

Android distribution Sept 2015

As should be expected, the percentages drop quite a bit from then on. Android 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich is now on 3.7% of devices, while Android 2.3.3 to Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread is now on 4.1% of devices. Finally, the last version that the Android Developers blog is tracking is Android 2.2, Froyo, which is now only on 0.2% of devices.

While the majority of devices are still running Android 4.4, it's at least good to see that Android 5.1 is seeing a rising number of devices registered with its software.

Which version of Android are you running on your daily driver?

Software update incoming for Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9; security and bug fixes

Posted: 08 Sep 2015 09:12 AM PDT

According to T-Mobile, an update for all Nexus phones since the Nexus 4, as well as the Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 9 tablets, will be available OTA over Wi-Fi later today.

The update will be Android 5.1.1 build LMY48M and includes security updates and bug fixes. Following the Stagefright madness virtually everyone — including Google — indicated that they would be instituting more regular update schedules and this would be the first of the monthly updates that Google promised for Nexus devices.

If you have one of the included Nexus devices, the OTA should be popping up later today, and if you are on T-Mobile, they'll be available over cellular at a later date if you are unable to access Wi-Fi for some reason.

Security updates aren't exactly exciting, particularly when there isn't a pressing threat that we know they are correcting, but it's good to see Google hitting their target for the monthly updates, and perhaps it will silence some of the ridiculous Android security rhetoric that we see doing the rounds all too often.
