[APK Download] Play Store 5.10.29 Adds New Google Play Logo And... That's Basically It For Now (Sorry)

Well, we know a big redesign is in store for Google Play (see here, here, here, and here), but today's 5.10.29 doesn't actually include that. Technically, it might be that these big design changes are controlled on the server side and simply waiting to be activated for end users, but we just don't know yet. Regardless, today's update is probably at the least laying the groundwork for these changes, and does include one noticeable visual alteration: the new Google Play text logo.

AT&T and T-Mo planning to let you use multiple devices under one phone number

Posted: 15 Oct 2015 01:34 PM PDT

AT&T has announced its plans for NumberSync, a service that will allow you to use multiple devices with one phone number. This doesn't only apply to smartphones, either: AT&T says that everything from tablets to wearables can be used with your phone number.

The service will depend on your devices being connected to AT&T, so there won't need to be a direct connection between your primary phone and other devices. Your primary phone can even be turned off. Your other devices will be able to make calls, check voicemail, and send texts using your regular number.

T-Mobile is following suit, announcing its own service to share one number across multiple devices. In classic T-Mo fashion, the company claims that its service will be far better than AT&T's from day one. T-Mobile operating chief Mike Sievert said, "Our strategy is to ask customers what they want and need, and then build it. AT&T's is to build or buy things, and then try to convince customers they asked for it." This is despite AT&T announcing the same service first, but T-Mo has to make some sort of controversial statement, don't they?

Sprint has announced that it is considering its own version of the service, though there is no official announcement.

This type of service sounds like a great idea and will free people from the constant connection to their phones. Forgetting your phone won't be so bad soon. No launch dates have been given so far. What do you think of these services? Will you be using them whenever they launch? Leave a comment!

New Play Store design teased in photo of its evolution

Posted: 15 Oct 2015 01:19 PM PDT

The Play Store is soon getting a whole new look, and I'm really digging it. In a photo showing the evolution of the Play Store (or Android Market, as it was known in the early years) and how far the app has come, we can see how it'll look come next major update. And of course, there are a few more photos teasing the new look.

We had some great times with the original Android Market. Updating apps all at once instead of having each download one by one was definitely fun, even though it failed quite often. Then it was rebranded the Play Store, and though some didn't like the change, it worked out well for Google.

New Play Store

The latest evolution of the app features the same search bar, but changes everything else. The many categories offered before are now condensed into two tabs, which are apps and entertainment. It sure looks better, and the animations are quite snazzy, but we'll have to give it a shot to see if it's an overall good change. It also features RTL support!

Kirill Grouchnikov shared this image as a sort of goodbye, as he's leaving the Play Store team. We wish you our best in your future endeavors on the frameworks team!

Cloud Chasers Takes You On A Randomly Generated Steampunk Journey Through The Desert

Posted: 15 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Cloud_Chasers_PromoTitle_WithAwards

In Cloud Chasers, you must travel across a vast desert to reach the promised land beyond, but it won't be an easy journey. This steampunk-style world is filled with rough terrain and hostile robots, not to mention deserts are pretty inhospitable to begin with. This game also has a socially motivated message, but it's handled gently.

Cloud Chasers is a subtle take on modern day immigration, but it addresses the topic in a fun and inventive way. Francisco and his daughter Amelia are headed to a world above the clouds where things are better, but it's a hard road.

Motorola Adds Stock Email App To The Play Store, Includes Screenshots Taken On Unannounced Droid Maxx 2

unnamedGmail gained the ability to handle non-Google email accounts in Lollipop, but most OEMs still make their own stock email client. Motorola is no different, and now it's added that app to the Play Store so it can be updated regularly. As an added bonus, the screenshots of the updated app were apparently taken on a Droid Maxx 2, which hasn't been announced yet. Very subtle, guys.

According to the changelog, Motorola is making a lot of tweaks to its email app.

Sonic Dash 2, A Free Endless Runner Based On The Sonic Boom Franchise, Is Now Live In The Play Store

Posted: 15 Oct 2015 11:14 AM PDT

imageWhen the best thing that you can say about the latest crop of a long-running video game property is that "the tie-in children's TV show isn't completely terrible," it's not a ringing endorsement. Such is the case with Sonic Boom: after nearly two decades of hit-and-miss remixes on the familiar Sonic formula, SEGA hit a real stinker with the almost universally-reviled Wii U/3DS dual release last year. The "hip" new designs for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and the rest of the gang might have been forgiven if the game itself hadn't been one of the worst entries in Sonic's 24-year catalog.

Battery life is a matter of huge importance for smartphone owners. Fortunately, there are a couple of companies out there who are placing a focus on battery life, and BLU Products is one of them. YouTube Gaming adds Android streaming and paid ‘sponsorships’ for streamers

Posted: 15 Oct 2015 10:02 AM PDT

YouTube Gaming and its corresponding Android app went live at the tail end of August, with a report surfacing in September that indicated the app would support streaming to the service right from an Android-based device. The wait for that specific feature is finally over, and streamers have a new option for revenue.

Google has made it official on their YouTube blog that YouTube Gaming now supports streaming from an Android device. The announcements states that Android users can now record and live stream mobile games through the YouTube Gaming app on their device. To activate it, simply tap the "Go Live" option within the app, then activate the front-facing camera on your device to show your face while playing the game. The microphone on your device will be used to provide the commentary as a streamer plays.

YouTube Gaming Sponsorship

Additionally, Google has confirmed that paid "sponsorships" are now going live for streamers using YouTube Gaming. This is similar to Twitch's subscriptions, which allows a viewer to subscribe to a streamer they like. YouTube Gaming's sponsorships are $3.99 per month, and Google says that the majority of that sponsorship goes to the creator. (Twitch, on the other hand, offers a half-and-half deal, where the streamer gets half of the $5.99 subscription that viewers pay.)

With a sponsorship, the viewer will get a badge next to their name indicating the they're a subscriber to the streamer, and will have access to exclusive chat sessions. One caveat: Paid sponsorships are only available to beta users. Google says they have plans to rollout beta channels soon.

Samsung adds Galaxy Note 5 color options of Silver Titanium and Pink Gold

Posted: 15 Oct 2015 09:47 AM PDT

Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 is one of the hottest smartphones on the market, and with good reason. It has blazing fast performance, a gorgeous display and a stellar camera, all paired with its distinctive feature of the S Pen, an active stylus that can be used for writing and drawing. To make it even better, Samsung is adding two new color options, dubbed Silver Titanium and Pink Gold.

The downside of the two new color options is that, for now at least, they're exclusive to South Korea, with no word on if or when there will be availability in other parts of the world. If you're in Korea, however, it's going to be good to know that the Silver Titanium model will sell in storage options of 32GB and 64GB, priced at 899,800 won and 965,800 won respectively. The Pink Gold model will only be available in 64GB capacity for 965,800 won.

We'll keep you posted if Samsung decides to bring these new color variants outside of South Korea.

Canadian Launch Of The Nexus 6P Delayed Till November 2

In case you were unaware, the Nexus 6P went out of stock in the Google Store a few days back.  Obviously the demand for Google's new flagship Nexus was higher than expected and now that high demand is going to cause a delay for the Canadian carrier launches.

According to an internal document from Bell, the launch for the Nexus 6P has been pushed back from October 26 to November 2.  Definitely not the kind of news that fans itching to get the device want to hear.  While no news has surfaced from Telus and Rogers, chances are that other carriers will face a similar delay.

We'll be sure to update you with any further developments on the Canadian Nexus launches!

Verizon and T-Mobile announce Samsung Gear S2 availability

Posted: 15 Oct 2015 08:33 AM PDT

The wearable market continues to grow and one of the latest wearables to hit the market is Samsung's Gear S2, which sets itself apart with a round display and a rotating bezel to navigate through the software. Samsung is selling its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi-only model, but now Verizon and T-Mobile have announced availability details for their cellular-enabled models.

Verizon has now opened pre-orders for the Gear S2, with general availability happening on November 6. Pricing is set at $299.99 on a two-year contract or $349.99 at full retail price. Customers can add the Gear S2 to their plan for $5/month, which will allow it to tap into the same talk, text and data pool that you use for your phone.

T-Mobile isn't offering pre-orders, but will begin selling the Samsung Gear S2 in-stores and online beginning on November 15, one month from today. The carrier will sell the Gear S2 for $359.99 at full retail price, though customers can split that up into 24 monthly payments if they wish. T-Mobile customers can add a Gear S2 to their plan for $5//month, which allows unlimited talk, text and data, with up to 500MB of high-speed data.

To allow its deep customization and unique navigation, Samsung has opted to use its own Tizen OS instead of Android Wear on the Gear S2. That being said, the Gear S2 is compatible with most Android phones running Android 4.4 or later, though there is a requirement of having at least 1.5GB of RAM. All in all, it looks to be a fantastic smartwatch for those who aren't concerned about using Android Wear.

LG G4 Getting Android 6.0 Update Next Week, But Only In Poland

lg-g4-marshmallow-update

Yesterday we shared news of the LG G4 getting Android 6.0 by this December. However, it looks like the phone will be getting it as soon as next week.

LG has announced, in a press release, the Android 6.0 rollout to its LG G4 flagship smartphone in Poland. The update will include all of Marshmallow's new features such as user-configurable permissions, Silent mode and Doze. LG claims to have worked closely with Google in order to make this happen and the company says it will bring the update to other regions after Poland's soak test.

The LG G4 was already confirmed to be among the phones to receive the update, as well as the LG G3 and the upcoming LG V10.

New Nexus’ Borrow Motorola’s Double Twist Camera Shortcut

Posted: 14 Oct 2015 10:48 PM PDT

Nexus Double Twist

The new Nexus' will soon be on their way to excited buyers and it seems that they'll be packing a camera shortcut that Motorola users are likely very familiar with.  Thanks to a recent hands on video that surfaced, we now know that the new Nexus' have a Motorola like double-twist camera shortcut packed into them.  That means that you'll have two shortcuts to the camera, the other being double tapping the power button.

The camera on the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P was definitely one of the highlights that Google keyed in on at the announcement so it makes sense to pack the devices with some useful shortcuts to the camera.  Now if Google will just revamp their camera app a little bit to offer some additional features and control, then the new Nexus' could really become some of the best shooters in the smartphone market.

Pre-Registration Opens For Blackberry Priv

Posted: 14 Oct 2015 10:33 PM PDT

Blackberry Priv Pre-Registration

Blackberry's future is a little bit in limbo but the device that could turn around their fortunes is nearly here.  That device, of course, is the Blackberry Priv and pre-registration for the device has now opened.

Now before you get too excited, this is a pre-registration, no a pre-order.  Signing up simply allows Blackberry to contact you once the device is available for purchase, which we expect to happen sometime in November.

On the plus side, the opening of pre-registration did confirm some specs for the upcoming device.  We now know for sure that the device will sport a 5.4″ dual curved display and Schneider-Kreuznach® certified camera.  A very healthy 3410 mAh battery should keep things running all day long and Blackberry is claiming extraordinary audio quality for the Priv.

Again, the Priv could be Blackberry's last hope and I'm really hoping that they're able to succeed with this Android powered slider.

LG G4 will start getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow next week

Posted: 14 Oct 2015 07:57 PM PDT

Good news, LG G4 owners! Android 6.0 is starting to roll out to your device next week! There's just one catch: The update is only rolling out to one country initially.

LG says that G4 units in Poland will start getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow next week. Updates for Europe, Asia, and the Americas are in the works, too, but LG hasn't given a timeframe in which we can expect to see them start rolling out.

As for what's included in the LG G4's Android 6.0 update, LG has chosen to highlight a few of Marshmallow's new goodies:

  • Permissions have been simplified with greater control of the information applications can access, not only at the installation stage but any time
  • Silent feature for sound and vibrate mode as well as a Do Not Disturb mode to block all sounds or only alarms and notifications
  • Doze Mode which shuts down background processing of certain apps when the phone is not in use, to significantly prolong battery life

Interestingly, LG also chose Poland as the first country to get Android 5.0 for the G3 last year. Perhaps there's a small but rabid LG fanbase in that country? Whatever reason, LG G4 owners outside of Poland are sure to be jealous of their Polish counterparts next week. Here's to hoping that rollouts for other locales aren't too far behind.
