Many Chrome For Android Stable Users Are Now Seeing The Eight-Icon New Tab Page

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 11:42 AM PDT

image (23)Google likes to tinker with the UI of the mobile version of Chrome's user interface in the Dev and Beta versions of the app. Not every change we spot in these versions make it into the standard, stable version of Chrome, but the changes to the New Tab page that we saw back in August seem to have made their way to the front. We're getting tips and reports from dozens of Chrome users that the UI change, which swaps out six website thumbnails for eight site icons instead, is now live.

Texpand Lets You Insert Commonly-Used Text In Any App With Any Keyboard

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 09:57 AM PDT

image (18)Compared to the early days of Android and iOS, it's amazing how good virtual keyboards have become... but that doesn't mean there's no room for improvement. Long email and street addresses in particular are a pain to type in, especially outside of the browser where saved user information isn't available. If you're tired of typing out your thirty-character company email address, Texpand can help: it allows you to create customized shortcodes for longer strings of text and use them in any text field.

10 Beautiful, Cool, And Original Wallpaper Apps To Dress Up Your Android Device

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 09:27 AM PDT

roundup-wallpapers-hero

Even though they're technically "backgrounds," wallpapers are an intricate part of our smartphone and a unique way for us to show our personality. They adorn our homescreens, greet us each time we unlock our phones, and try to stay hidden while still being enjoyable. Some of us like nothing but a black screen full of widgets and apps, others prefer a gradient or pattern to add a touch of color, and some like simple graphics while others use photographs.

Who's Down, A New Invite-Only Google App, Lets Your Friends Know When You're Available

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 07:12 AM PDT

image (12)There have been fewer and fewer new Google apps as the company expands into every conceivable web and mobile market, but they still manage to surprise us every now and then. The latest Google app is called Who's Down, and it's a strangely specific social tool. Basically it's an all-purpose "available" button. Slide the toggle from on to off, and anyone you've connected with can tell that you're available for... whatever.

The Giant Samsung Galaxy View Tablet Gets A Custom CNN News App

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 06:27 AM PDT

image (5)The Galaxy View is big. Really, really big - the 18.4-inch device seems to be intended as a tabletop computer rather than a conventional portable tablet. Samsung's custom version of Android will make good use of the extra space, but even the tablet apps on the Play Store probably aren't well-formatted for a screen the size of a small PC monitor. To make sure users are getting a good experience on their Galaxy View, CNN has made an app especially for the tablet...

PBS Video App Updated With Support For Android TV

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 09:55 PM PDT

PBS_20151030_222923While Android TV doesn't enjoy the wide support that Chromecast gets, and its current app catalog can't hold a candle to competitors that have been in the market for much longer like Roku, it's slowly and surely getting better. The latest major network to offer an official Android TV is PBS, the United States' government-funded Public Broadcasting Service. The free app is available to download on Android TV units now.

PBS Video uses the same Google Play Store listing as the phone and tablet version of the app, it's just been expanded to Android TV with additional API support.

Amazon Music 5.0 Adds SD Card Downloads, Android Wear Support, Artist Pages For Prime Music, And More

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 06:15 PM PDT

image (22)Amazon has been slowly but steadily improving its official Music app for years. The latest update, which is christened version 5.0, adds quite a few features. Most notable among them is the ability to download music from your personal library and/or Amazon Prime Music directly to your phone or tablet's MicroSD card, assuming you have one. That should be especially useful for users with budget phones, which tend to rely on expandable storage and ignore the fact that many apps don't access it in the first place.

Samsung Pay has been in customers' hands for a while now, including Verizon customers that thought it might not ever come to the carrier. And there have been various promotions offering free stuff to sign up for the service. The latest is courtesy of Samsung and is open to everyone that can use the service.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, or Note 5, register for a Samsung Pay account and add a bank card to become eligible for a Samsung wireless charging pad. Then hit the source link to start the process of getting one for free! The deal is limited to 200,000 chargers and ends on November 8th, so you better hurry!

Unfortunately, you probably won't get your charger immediately. It seems that those who participated in similar promotions before are still waiting on their chargers since they're currently backordered. And if you've already gotten one, you aren't eligible this time around.

Samsung's ginormous tablet, the Galaxy View, is making its way to Canada and will be sold exclusively through Bell.  The massive tablet will begin selling on November 18 will be sold through Bell stores as well as The Source, an authorized Bell retailer.

As for specs, the Godzilla like table will pack a massive 18.4″ 1080p display powered by an octo-core Exynos processor and 2GB of RAM.  The tablet will come with 32GB of expandable storage and will house a hefty 5700 mAh battery.  A 2.1MP camera also adorns the front in case you need to do some video chatting.  As the device is geared towards video streaming, it will come pre-loaded with Bell's Fibe TV app.

Now if you're interested in picking up this video centric device you're going to have to shell our a pretty penny or two or….seventy thousand.  That's right, the Galaxy View costs $700.  Pretty steep price when you could probably pick up a decent smart TV that can do many of the same things…

Apple releases Beats Pill+ app for Android

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 03:36 PM PDT

Apple's second application for Android happens to be far more useful than its first. Move to iOS is an app that assists in moving away from Android, so you can imagine that a lot of Android fans didn't have particularly positive feelings about it. But this one is pretty good.

Beats Pill+ is an app to control the Beats Pill+ speaker, though you probably guessed that. It has some cool features, like an amplify mode for two speakers to play the same audio, and a stereo mode so two speakers play their respective channels. It also allows another person to connect to the speaker and play music with you.

Little extras are a charge indicator and the ability to rename the speaker. Despite the iOS user interface, it looks to be a pretty decent app. There may be some compatibility issues that need to be fixed, but if you have one of these speakers, hit the source link to download the companion app!
