HTC Preview program officially comes to the US

Posted: 25 Nov 2015 01:59 PM PST

The HTC Preview program is officially expanding to the US and HTC is looking for brave souls who are willing to lend a helping hand. HTC Preview participants are often given pre-release software updates and may also be sent pre-release devices for field testing to ensure that all bugs are worked out before the product is made available to the general public. While getting software updates or new devices before everyone else may sound like a lot of fun, HTC is only looking for serious participants to help them with the program. You also have to be willing to let HTC into your life like never before. The pre-release software updates that you test will contain software that logs network/signal strength, battery information, usage times and the apps that you use. That being said, HTC won't be keeping track of your personal data like passwords, account information, text messages, MMS, emails or call logs (unless authorized by you).

HTC's team that's heading up the HTC Preview program in the US just finished up an AMA on Reddit, answering quite a few questions from the community. If you're at all interested in joining HTC Preview, you can sign up here. We also suggest you read through the AMA since it contains quite a few details on what you can expect if you are selected to be a part of the program. HTC isn't saying how many people it's hoping to recruit, but you do need to have service on Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint or AT&T just to be considered.

Do you think the feedback HTC will get through this program will help solve some of the issues that the company's been facing these past few years?

After Football Manager Mobile, SEGA Releases Football Manager Touch 2016 For Tablets, With 50% More Dimensions For 100% More Dollars

Now Football Manager Manager Touch 2016, a more high-powered version with full 3D simulated football matches, has joined it. SEGA's naming scheme is a little convoluted: Touch is more of a high-end game than Mobile, though both of them support mobile hardware and touch controls.

TYLT holding Black Friday weekend sale with accessories up to 50% off

Posted: 25 Nov 2015 12:53 PM PST

TYLT is easily one of the most talked about charging accessory manufacturers due to their innovative designs and high quality products. However, if you've read any of our reviews, our most common and only real complaint is the price. There are much cheaper charging accessories out there, but they may be made with questionable quality.

Well, once again TYLT is blessing us with a great Black Friday weekend sale. They've been doing it since I've been following TYLT products, and it's how I picked up my first pair of TYLT VU wireless chargers. It was a great decision then and the TYLT VUs are still my favorite wireless chargers. They're so well-designed and convenient to use.

So here's the deal: Between 11/27 and 11/30, TYLT will be offering 35% off its entire wireless charging line and 50% off all other products. This means my personal favorite VU Wireless Charger is just $39, the Energi Sliding Power Case I just reviewed and really liked is just $35, and a 1-meter FLYP-DUO — which would fit well in a stocking — is down to $15. On top of that, TYLT is also offering free shipping on all U.S. orders. All discounts will be applied automatically upon checking out, so there's on coupon code necessary.

We have reviewed multiple different TYLT products here on Android and Me. Below are a list of reviews that we've done, in case you're interested in learning about our experience with the devices before you buy:

In the past, TYLT's Black Friday weekend sale was so popular it broke their website, but TYLT was great and still honored their deals beyond the weekend for those that weren't able to get in during the deal. My advice is to definitely take advantage of these deals and to do it early. These deals from TYLT basically come around only once a year. I'm a huge fan of these products and you will be too.

Let us know if you have any questions about any of these products by commenting below. Also, let us know if you own any TYLT products and what you think about them or what you're going to buy this weekend. Happy Thanksgiving!

The Fossil Q Founder is now available for $295

Posted: 25 Nov 2015 08:28 AM PST

At the tail end of October, Fossil officially introduced the Q Founder smartwatch, which runs an Intel chip under its hood and boasts Google's Android Wear platform. At the time, Fossil wasn't prepared to announce an official launch date, with expectations that the new smartwatch with Fossil's classic timepiece design would arrive in time for the holiday shopping season.

Turns out that's indeed the case, as Fossil has officially listed the Q Founder on its website for immediate availability. Pricing for the Q Founder is set at $295.00 (a bit higher than the expected $275), with plenty of different shipping methods to choose from, including an overnight option for an additional $19.95 that can put the watch on your doorstep in 1 to 2 business days.

As far as specs go, it features a case size of 46mm, with 4GB of built-in storage, the aforementioned Intel chip, Bluetooth 4.1 for connectivity, and a battery that measures in at 400mAh, which Fossil says is "estimated all day" in longevity. The watch itself is stainless steel, and so is the strap. It's IP67-rated water resistant, and it does indeed have a touchscreen. It can connect to Android 4.4+ and iOS 8+.

A quick search for any Fossil stores that might have stock ready for pickup was fruitless, so if you want to get your wrist underneath a Q Founder, it looks like the safest bet is ordering online.

T-Mobile is offering a $200 holiday bonus for Sprint customers who switch

Posted: 25 Nov 2015 07:28 AM PST

The lively competition between Sprint and T-Mobile is carrying on today with T-Mobile firing the latest shot. The self-named "Un-carrier" has announced that it will an give extra $200 per line to every Sprint customer that switches during the holiday season. That extra $200 is in addition to T-Mobile offering up to $650 per line to cover switching costs, making it quite lucrative for Sprint customers to switch at the moment.

For those looking to score even more of a deal, T-Mobile is currently offering three free months of unlimited high-speed data to all of its Simple Choice customers, even if they're only paying for a couple of gigabytes of data each month. If you were considering switching to T-Mobile, this is the time to do it, as you likely won't see a deal this good again. Just make sure you have T-Mobile coverage before you make the switch.

If you're on Verizon or AT&T and are feeling a bit jealous that you don't have an offer like this, just hold on a bit longer. T-Mobile will be making similar offers to Verizon and AT&T customers within the coming weeks.

Review: Lenovo 100S Chromebook, the affordable holiday laptop

Posted: 25 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Chromebooks have always been an area of interest. The concept of the Chromebook took cues from the failed wave of netbooks and went for portability and low price. But rather than pairing that with a traditionally more intensive operating system like Windows, Chromebooks were outfitted with Chrome OS, Google's ultra-light operating system that revolves around web browsing and taking full advantage of the cloud.

In the time since Chromebooks came into being, a whole host of companies have created Chromebooks. Some have been great, while others have been flops. Now Lenovo is taking another step into the Chromebook game with its newest model, the Lenovo 100S Chromebook.

Lenovo has designed the 100 S Chromebook to be an extremely affordable Chromebook option that arrives just in time for the holiday shopping season, when hordes of shoppers will be searching for deals wherever they can find them. As such, the 100S Chromebook is priced as low as $179 for the base model.

So what can you get for $179? Read on to find out.

1. Hardware

_DSC6226

The Lenovo 100S Chromebook was designed to be easy on the wallet, and the modest specs reflect that. Lenovo has outfitted the 100S Chromebook with a an 11.6-inch LED display with a resolution of 1366×768. Inside, the device has a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Celeron N2840 processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, Intel HD graphics, 16GB of flash storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a battery that lasts for an average time of about 8 hours.

As far as ports go, you can expect to find a combo microphone and headphone jack, one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.0 port, a 4-in-1 card reader (SD, MMC, SDHC, SDXC), an HDMI port and a security lock. For dimensions, the Lenovo 100S Chromebook is 8.23 inches in width, 11.81 inches in depth and 0.75 inches in height. It's also lightweight, at just 2.64 lbs, though in comparison to other laptops of its size, it's a bit weighty.

All in all, the hardware of the 100S Chromebook is humble, but that's expected at its low price point.

2. Design and Build Quality

The Lenovo 100S Chromebook is geared towards a budget market, so we expected some compromises. The build quality is one of them. The device is primarily made of plastic, with a very light texture on the exterior. It did well enough at resisting fingerprints, but unfortunately, it's extraordinarily scratch-prone.

Seemingly anything scratches the plastic on the lid of the 100S Chromebook. Even putting it into a neoprene laptop bag with its charger left it with scratches. If you try it, you could likely scratch the lid with your fingernail. While this doesn't cause any usability issues, it certainly makes the device feel much lower quality when it accumulates scratches so easily.

With the lid opened, the design isn't too bad. It's basic, but that's expected with the price. Nicely enough, Lenovo has put in an aluminum palm rest, which makes the 100S Chromebook significantly more comfortable to use. The trackpad is plastic, but it's pleasant enough to use and didn't seem to have any noticeable quirks. The keyboard features a surprising amount of spacing between the island keys. The keys have an acceptable amount of travel, though they make a rather loud clicking sound. As a whole, the keyboard is fine. It's not going to win any awards, but it's much better than the keyboards found in many laptops in this price range.

3. Display

_DSC6207

Lenovo put a fairly standard display on the 100S Chromebook, and you can tell when you're using the device. Small text and icons can be a bit fuzzy, but most things are perfectly readable, though you shouldn't expect too much sharpness. Colors are fine; a bit bland but not too distorted. Whites have a tendency to be overblown and blacks aren't terribly inky, but again, the quality is perfectly acceptable for the price range.

As far as brightness goes, you might have a bit of a problem when using the device in bright sunlight, but for indoor use, you'll be fine.

4. Software

Software has never been Lenovo's strong point, which is why we're glad that the company used stock Chrome OS for the 100S Chromebook. Chrome OS is incredibly simple and easy to use, with nearly everything taking place through Chrome and its apps and extensions.

If you're considering a Chromebook, you may want to take a quick tour of the Chrome Web Store to get a feel for what's out there. And if you're planning to work with documents, spreadsheets and other office functions, spend some time getting used to Google's suite of office apps as well as Google Drive, as they'll likely be your mainstays when using a Chromebook.

As a whole, Chrome OS is surprisingly full-fledged, with a surprising amount of capabilities for a web-based OS. It may take a little getting used to for some users, but it shouldn't be hard for most people to pick up.

5. Performance

_DSC6285

Chrome OS is designed to require minimal hardware to run on. As such, even the low-end hardware found in the 100S Chromebook is good enough to offer decent performance. During my usage of the device, I didn't run into many slowdowns, even when loading rather complex web pages. Some apps may give the 100S some trouble, but for most everyday usage, you won't have a problem thanks to Chrome OS's fantastic optimization.

As far as web browsing and simple tasks are concerned, the 100S Chromebook can handle itself without a problem.

6. Battery

The battery on the 100S Chromebook is quite good, getting an average of about 9 hours of usage during my testing of the device. Lenovo rates the battery as good for 8 hours of usage, so an even better real world performance was a pleasant surprise. Lenovo has always been good with batteries in its devices, and the 100S Chromebook is no exception, making it a great choice for those who are often away from an outlet.

Lenovo 100S Chromebook7 / 10

_DSC6243

Lenovo's goal with the 100S Chromebook was to create an affordable, portable laptop for the holiday season. The company has reached that goal with a device that, while average, is a great choice for those looking to get a laptop at a great price.

Our only real complaint about the Lenovo 100S Chromebook is the build quality and how easily the device scratches. That, however, is more of stylistic issue, rather than a problem with the functionality. Functionally, you're getting a lot of bang for your buck, and plenty of people would be more than happy to unwrap a Lenovo 100S Chromebook during the holidays.

You purchase the 16GB model from Lenovo for $179.99, the 32GB model is priced at $199.99 and there's also a version with 4GB of RAM that's set at $229.99. For those really looking to score a deal, Amazon has the 16GB model listed for only $149.99, making it a steal.

Galaxy S7 Could Feature MicroSD Card Slot

Posted: 24 Nov 2015 11:25 PM PST

Samsung Next Big Thing

Samsung released the Galaxy S6 earlier this year and one of the major cons long time Samsung fans talked about was the absense of a micro SD card slot. Every Galaxy S smartphone prior to the S6 came with one, and maybe even the upcoming one.

According to HDBlog.it, Samsung is considering on having a micro SD card slot for its upcoming Galaxy S7 and S7 Plus smartphone. LG took advantage of this and provided a microSD slot and a removable battery in its LG G4 smartphone in order to try and capture old Samsung owners.

The return of a micro SD card slot would be a very interesting move as Samsung previously stated the reason the Galaxy S6 did not have a micro SD card slot was because of the phone's UFS 2.0 file system.

Get The OnePlus 2 Without An Invite On Black Friday!

OnePlus Blackfriday

The biggest drawback for all of OnePlus' devices has undoubtedly been their sales system.  Although their invite system makes sense from a business and finance sense, it has infuriated potential consumers and has possibly caused the company to miss out on some sales.

Well according to a recent Tweet by OnePlus, the store will be WIDE OPEN… well, at least for a few days.  OnePlus announced that they will sell their 2015 flagship, the OnePlus 2, without an invite from November 27-November 30!  The occasion?  Black Friday of course!

Despite some of its shortcomings, the OnePlus still offers some of the best bang for buck on the market so it's definitely worth a look if you're looking to get a phone on the cheap.

ASUS' latest Android Wear smartwatch, the ZenWatch 2 has been known for some months, and soon Aussies will be able to grab one, in time for Christmas.

The ZenWatch 2 is available in two sizes this time round, accommodating those with smaller wrists –like myself — who would otherwise have been rocking a slab of screen on their wrist, had they retained the standard 49 x 41mm model with a 22mm strap. The new smaller model accepts 18mm watch bands and measures in at 45 x 37mm. Given that the smaller model has a smaller display, its resolution has been downscaled appropriately from 320 x 320 on the regular 1.63-inch display size, to 280 x 280 on a 1.45-inch display ...
