Android 5.1.1 Rolling Out To S6 & S6 Edge On Bell, Virgin And SaskTel

Posted: 26 Nov 2015 11:25 AM PST

Lollipop

The roll out of Android 5.1.1 to the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge has been slow to say the least.  The update had suffered several delays but it began making its way out again a little over a week ago.  Well that roll out is continuing on as Bell, Virgin and Sasktel S6's and S6 Edge's are now getting update to Android 5.1.1.

Nothing too special in the update but there are some necessary security fixes for some of the recent exploits that were discovered.  If you haven't received the notification, be sure to jump into your settings and do a manual check.

Get More, Play More With The Amazon Appstore And Amazon Coins [Sponsored By Amazon]

amazonunderground

Whether you're a hardcore mobile gamer or just someone who likes to use games as a distraction to pass the time, basically everyone plays games on their smartphone and/or tablet. With the popularity of mobile games in recent years, however, we've also seen a rise in in-app purchases and higher-priced mobile games. But sometimes it's just hard to justify spending any additional money on virtualized currency or other in-game perks.

Amazon gets that, and the introduction of the Amazon Appstore and Amazon Coins are the company's answer to high game and IAP costs.

OnePlus Offers Up Refund For USB Type-C Cables Bought For Other Phones

Posted: 26 Nov 2015 08:51 AM PST

OnePlus USB Type C

As the world slowly moves towards a new USB standard with USB Type-C, we've quickly learned that not all cables are made the same.  Google made this very clear as they warned users about using any ol' USB-Type C cable to charge their new Nexus' as some cables could damage the phones.  One proactive Google-er, Benson Leung, has begun a mission to review all of the world's USB-Type C cables to let us know which are safe for our shiny new Nexus'.

One particular cable that did not live up to Google's and Benson's standards came from OnePlus.  Here's what Benson had to say about their:

It is not spec compliant (uses a 3A identifier resistor instead of the "Default USB Power" one), and may cause damage to your charger, hub, or PC USB port if you use it with #ChromebookPixel  or#nexus6p#Nexus5x .

Now it should be noted that the cable is perfectly safe to use with the OnePlus 2, but many were purchasing the affordable cable hoping to use it elsewhere and that's where the problem lies.  In a show of good faith, OnePlus has stepped up and will be offering refunds to those who purchased their cables for other devices.  According to their post, the refunds will be available till December 31, 2015 so you'll need to register quick (hit the link below for instructions).  They also noted that they are already working on a new USB Type-C cable that will be compliant so stay tuned for the release of that.

Well done OnePlus, well done.

Google Might Be Helping Samsung To Optimize Touchwiz

Posted: 25 Nov 2015 11:03 PM PST

Samsung Marshmallow - 6

Samsung has used Touchwiz to differentiate its Android products for as long as I can remember. While it really has come a long way since its inception, there are still a significant number complaints about it causing performance issues on even the latest and greatest hardware.

One example of this is the horrible RAM management on Samsung's flagship smartphones this year like the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 despite both coming with at least 3GB of RAM.

However, a new rumour suggests that Google is considering on helping Samsung optimize its proprietary user interface. One reason for this is because Samsung phones dominate the Android market, Touchwiz needs to be more efficient such that it doesn't negatively harm the underlying OS's image as a fast and (now) beautiful mobile platform.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow has been leaked for the Note 5 and it features quite a few changes in order to fit Marshmallow's theme.

Posted: 25 Nov 2015 05:09 PM PST

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday approaching, many of you were probably wondering if Google Play would be offering discounts like it has in the past. The answer is: Yes, yes it will.

The Google Play Cyber Weekend sale is underway, offering deals on apps, games, movies, TV shows, and more. There are some solid discounts to take advantage of on games like Pac-Man CE DX, Leo's Fortune, and Final Fantasy, and discounts on apps and subscriptions like Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords and VSCO.

Moving over to media, you can snag discounts on music from Fetty Wap, Muse, Notorious B.I.G., and Fleetwood Mac, movies like John Wick and Mad Max: Fury Road, and TV shows like Game of Thrones and Adventure Time. There are also sales on books and magazines.

One other notable deal is a 3-month Google Play Music subscription for $1. Unfortunately, I keep getting errors when I try to take advantage of that deal.

Overall this looks like a pretty solid Cyber Weekend sale. There are all kinds of deals to be had, including some pretty big titles, so most everyone ought to be able to find an offer or two that they want to take advantage of.
