Google Says Chrome OS Is Here To Stay

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 03:11 PM PST

Chrome OS

Last week a rumour broke out that Google was planning to fold Chrome OS into Android.  Frankly, this rumour has been circulating for years now but the fact that the report was coming from the Wall Street Journal gave it a little extra attention.

Over the last few days, there's been some confusion about the future of Chrome OS and Chromebooks based on speculation that Chrome OS will be folded into Android. While we've been working on ways to bring together the best of both operating systems, there's no plan to phase out Chrome OS.

Well Google has stepped forward to clear the air and according to them, the rumour is still false.  While they admitted that they are working on bringing both operating systems together, there is no plan to phase out Chrome OS.  It's still not completely clear what they mean when they say "bring together the best of both operating systems" because to me that sure sounds like the two merging but for the time being, they will remain separate entities.

Google to require secure factory reset option in Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 01:56 PM PST

Security is a huge deal these days, with all of our personal info online and on our mobile devices. Getting a smartphone stolen is not only a big financial burden, but the information on it could do far worse damage than an extra $800 out of your bank account for a new phone. And when getting rid of a device, just wiping it isn't enough.

Thankfully, Google is taking security very seriously. With the release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google is now requiring OEMs to include an option for a secure wipe. This will not only perform a logical wipe (which will allow deleted files to be recovered), but also a physical wipe. This will help keep your data safe.

This is now required to use Android 6.0 and Google Play Services, though manufacturers generally offer this feature as it is. But it shows that Google is serious about security, which we can all take comfort in.

Opera And Opera Mini Get Updates Including Video Compression For Opera And Download Notifications For Mini

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 01:52 PM PST

unnamedOpera is still that other browser. It's not the most popular Android browser, or even the most popular alternative to Chrome, but it does carve out a niche with the built-in compression features. Plus, it's based on Chromium. Today, both Opera and Opera Mini have gotten notable updates. Perhaps most interesting is the ability for Opera to compress video streams to save data and prevent buffering in poor signal areas.

Let's start with the full Opera for Android, which adds the following features.

Another beta release of Minecraft Pocket Edition is ready for Android users. This time the big news is the inclusion of Redstone circuits.

You know, Redstone circuits! Don't act like you don't know what they are. Wires, buttons, lamps, torches, levers, pressure plates—all made of Redstone!

No, I don't play Minecraft, not even the adventure game from TellTale Games. What gave it away?

Anyways, this version also includes cute fluffy crop-eating bunnies.

Twitter and Vine replacing stars with hearts

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 01:11 PM PST

Favoriting something with a star is a big commitment, you know? We just don't know if we can commit to making something our favorite. And the smiley faces for Vine? It's just too much And that's what we've had to do with Twitter and Vine, which featured star symbols as a "favorite" and smileys for "likes."

Twitter felt that the star was a strange symbol to newcomers, and the heart would be a more recognizable symbol for liking something. That's fair, though it seems like a very insignificant change. Either way, you'll start seeing it across all applications on all platforms, including Twitter for Android, Vine on Android, and the web.

OnePlus releases photography app called Reflexion

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 12:56 PM PST

As of late, OnePlus has been venturing into markets other than smartphones. The company also released a standalone USB Type-C cable that will work with any phone that supports Type-C. It's definitely a nice cable at a low price. And now, OnePlus has released an app.

This app is called Reflexion, and it allows you to take a photo with your front-facing camera and one with the rear camera. The app then combines the two images into this divided and mirrored image. It's artsy, though I don't know how many times you'll use it before getting bored.

If you want to give it a shot, head over to the Play Store (or iTunes, if you roll that way) and let us know what you think!

A lot of teams and companies use Basecamp to track projects (we use it here at Android Police even), and today there's a new version of Basecamp. Basecamp 3 is a complete revamp of the service, and there's an Android app to go along with it.

If you've been using Basecamp for your own project or as a part of a team, you'll need to make a new Basecamp 3 project. There's currently no migration tool, and your old Basecamp 2 projects won't be accessible from the BC3 app.

Pushbullet is all about sharing, so the latest update seems a natural progression. You now have the option to insert Pushbullet targets into Android's share menu. Don't just send a file to Pushbullet—send it to a specific phone, tablet, or PC. This is through implementation of Android 6.0's Direct Share feature, which lets apps provide their own share options. In a future update, the developers want to prioritize whichever devices serve as frequent recipients.

Rogers Adds The 64GB Galaxy Note 5 To Their Line Up

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 08:41 AM PST

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Silver

The Galaxy Note 5 has been on the market since August but at launch we here in Canada were limited to just the 32GB option.  Well after a long wait, one carrier has decided to double down on the Note 5.  Rogers is now offering the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 in the 64GB in both Black Sapphire and White Titanium.  Pricing for the device starts at $439.99 on contract and $859.99 outright.  Oddly, the outright price is only a difference of $10 so that's pretty much a no-brainer if you're no planning on signing a contract.

Besides the storage, the device is identical to the 32GB version os you're still getting the same beautiful design and stellar hardware.  Hopefully the other carriers follow suit as 32GB of non expandable storage just doesn't do it for a lot of people.

Inbox by Gmail aims to help you save time with Smart Reply

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 08:26 AM PST

While Google has Gmail, its mainstay email app, available for mobile devices, it also has another option called Inbox, which the company hopes will become even more functionally worthwhile for users with the addition of a new feature called Smart Reply.

Google officially announced the new feature on Tuesday, November 3, and it works by guessing how you'd like to respond to a particular email in your inbox. The function will see three options for the user to select, which will then be used as the reply and sent to the recipient. If you wish to edit the Smart Reply option, you can do that, so if you need to add a bit more content you can. You can also choose to simply ignore the options offered up by Smart Reply and tap in your own reply as you normally would.

Inbox by Gmail Smart Reply

There's some impressive machine learning happening with Smart Reply, and Google says it will get better over time as it learns which emails you're typically more inclined to reply to and build natural language replies to hopefully not only save time, but also make it look like you're not just automating the reply process. The feature will learn over time, based on the Smart Reply options you decide to go with or ultimately opt to skip.

As far as release goes, Google says the Smart Reply function will roll out to Inbox users for both Android and iOS beginning at the end of this week.

What do you think of the idea?

Pair the Nexus 6P with the Huawei Watch, get $50 off

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 06:26 AM PST

Apparently it's Nexus discount day. In addition to HTC's Hot Deal on the Nexus 9, you can also score a $50 discount if you buy the Nexus 6P and pair it with the Huawei Watch. The promotion is only available through Huawei's website in the US for now, and we do not know if Huawei plans on offering the same to in other countries across the globe.

The base Nexus 6P and Huawei Watch will set you back $800 after the $50 discount, but you can spend nearly $1450 if you opt for the 128GB Nexus 6P and Rose Gold Plated Stainless Steel Huawei Watch. If you do decide to take advantage of Huawei's promotion, you will need to wait until "early to mid-December" for the Nexus 6P to show up at your door step. Fortunately, the Huawei Watch is ready to ship immediately, giving you the most attractive Android Wear timepiece to keep track of each passing hour until your Nexus arrives.

Get 40% off the Nexus 9 if you buy the tablet today

Posted: 03 Nov 2015 05:56 AM PST

It's Tuesday again and HTC is back with another Hot Deal. For today only, HTC will sell you the Nexus 9 for 40% off its usual retail price. The 16GB base mode is already sold out, but you can still order the 32GB Wi-Fi model for $287.40, and the 32GB LTE variant is selling for $359.40. The Nexus 9 may be a year old already, but it's still one of the best Android tablets on the market and currently the only Android tablet running Marshmallow.

HTC's Nexus 9 promotion only lasts until midnight tonight (PST), but if you're even slightly interested in picking up HTC's tablet, we recommend heading over to HTC's site as soon as possible since inventory appears to be disappearing pretty quickly.
