Until today, just five countries had access to Google Play TV shows: Australia, Canada, the US, UK, and Japan. Now, Germany and France have joined the rather [frustratingly] exclusive Play TV club, and that's not all. Germany and Spain are also getting access to redeemable Google Play credit promo codes starting today, both having already been in the list of countries with Google Play gift cards.

While Play Movies is available in dozens of countries, licensing television shows can be much more difficult.

Verizon confirms it will carry the BlackBerry PRIV ‘soon’

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 02:29 PM PST

It's only been a few days since AT&T confirmed that it would be carrying the BlackBerry-branded PRIV, and now Verizon Wireless is getting in on the fun.

By way of its official Verizon News Twitter account, the carrier has confirmed that it will also carry the Android-powered BlackBerry PRIV. Unfortunately for those that might be considering the handset under the Big Red umbrella, the carrier wasn't forthcoming on just when it will launch the handset. As it stands, it's only listed as "coming soon."

If the PRIV shows up in time for the holiday shopping season, do you plan on picking one up?

Google Maps and Search can display a shop’s holiday hours

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 12:26 PM PST

Lots of us use Google Maps and Search to find businesses and get info about them, like their location and hours. Those features really come in handy during the holidays, and now Google is making Maps and Search even more useful for us that'll be out shopping for loved ones.

Google is adding holiday hours to Google Maps and Search. That means that when you're viewing a business page, you'll see the shop's holiday hours if there's a holiday coming up in the next 7 days. If the business doesn't have any holiday hours available anywhere, Google will warn you that the shops hours may be different than what's listed because of the holiday.

It can take a lot of time to hunt down a business's holiday hours, especially when you're on a phone and are forced to navigate a website that may not be mobile-optimized. Google's addition to Maps and Search makes everything much easier, which is good because anything that can reduce the stress of holiday shopping is welcome.

Crossy Road Developers Release 'Shooty Skies,' A Casual Free-To-Play Take On Shoot-Em-Ups

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 12:20 PM PST

shootyCrossy Road is often presented as a prime example of what's wrong with casual games, because it's a free-to-play game that's based on a classic (Frogger) and lacks any kind of sophistication. But Crossy Road does a lot of things right, too: it has an interesting if not unique visual style, it's accessible to any kind of gamer, and best of all, its free-to-play model is entirely reasonable, asking for only one dollar at a time and never forcing players to buy currency or tokens for random rewards.

Sprint is offering an Amazon Prime subscription with the purchase of a Samsung device

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 10:41 AM PST

For anyone that has been considering cozying up to Sprint for their cellular needs, the Now Network has recently kicked off a promotion that might see the deal sweetened a bit — as long as you want a Samsung device, that is.

Sprint is now offering a free year of Amazon Prime for anyone that begins service with the carrier and also purchases a Samsung device. That means you'll have to choose between a Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, or the Galaxy Note 5 to qualify for the promotion. Once you pick the handset you want, you'll need to sign up for either a Sprint Lease, Easy Pay, a two-year contract or simply buy the device outright.

The promotion is open to new customers and current subscribers that are just adding a line, too. It's available now and it will run until Monday, November 30. As for as the Prime subscription itself, Sprint seems to be just doling out promotional codes for a year's worth of the service, so that means current Prime subscribers should simply be able to extend their subscription with the promo code.

Amazon Prime is a whole collection of different services and offerings. That includes access to Prime Video and Prime Music streaming, free two-day shipping, and unlimited cloud storage of photos thanks to Prime Photo. It typically retails for $99 per year, so getting a free year with all of that bundled into it is probably a good deal for most.

Do you plan on taking advantage of the promo?

Nexus 5X Launching On November 10 On Canadian Carriers

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 10:07 AM PST

Nexus 5X Official - 2

The Nexus 5X has been available through the Google Store for a little while now but Canadians will soon be able to pick up the device from their local carrier.  So far, Bell, Telus, Videtron, SaskTel and Eastlink have all committed to carrying the device and there's a good chance Rogers will join the party too.  As for a release date, I have received a couple of tips regarding Telus and SaskTel stating that the device will launch on November 10 so it seems pretty safe to assume that that's when all carriers will make the 5X available for purchase.

On the downside, only one model seems to be shipping out to carriers, the 16GB Black.  So if you're hoping for some more storage or you're wanting a different colour, the Google Store is your only option.  As for pricing, my tips state that the outright price will be about $600 ($100 jump from the Google Store!) and between $100-$150.  So if you're planning on buying it outright, the Google Store seems like the better bet.

Motorola unveils the Moto G Turbo Edition with 5-inch display, 13MP camera and more

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 08:57 AM PST

Motorola isn't quite done announcing new devices, apparently. Recently, the company officially debuted another member of the Moto G lineup, but this one's specifically meant for a single market, it seems.

With the new Moto G, dubbed the Turbo Edition, Motorola has actually improved some important specifications, including the display's resolution and the processor under the hood. Now the 5-inch display boasts a resolution of 1920×1080, while inside the device is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, with a microSD card slot to expand it when necessary.

On the back, the Moto G Turbo Edition features a 13-megapixel camera, while the front boasts a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The battery is measured in at 2470mAh and it features Motorola's Turbo Power technology. It's running a stock version of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the gate.

As far as availability goes, the Moto G Turbo Edition is slated to arrive in Mexico soon, and Motorola wasn't willing to say whether or not the device will be making an appearance in any other market. It's priced to the equivalent of $283.

What do you think of the Moto G Turbo Edition?

Blackberry Priv Now Available In Canada

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 08:21 AM PST

blackberry-priv2

The first Android powered Blackberry is officially available today as various carriers have launched the Blackberry Priv.  The general pricing for most carriers is about $400 on contract and $800 outright so it's definitely not the most wallet friendly device.  Here's a quick look at the specs:

  • 5.4″ Dual Curved QHD AMOLED Display
  • Snapdragon 808 Processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB Expandable Storage
  • 18MP Camera with OIS and Phase Detection Auto Focus
  • 2MP Front Facing Camera
  • 3410 mAh Battery

Early reviews around the web are generally favourable with many pointing at the keyboard as the main reason to buy this over another flagship calibre device.  I look forward to giving it a whirl myself and once I receive a review unit I'll be sure to report back with my thoughts.

Anyone buying today?

With the latest app update, that restriction is finally gone, so you can add multiple bank accounts to the app. For extra security, a "Lock Now" button has also been added to the drawer, which bypasses the pin timeout and immediately locks the app.

The update will take a while to roll out, so keep an eye on the Play Store for the update.
