Fly Labs, "Creators Of The World's Best Video Editing Apps," Get Acquired By Google And Join The Photos Team

As an Android user, you are forgiven for not knowing who or what Fly Labs is. The company's video editing suite of applications is only available on iOS so your exposure to its products may have been non-existent. But you're about to hear more about Fly Labs or at least its products' features since it has just been acquired by Google.

The company announced the acquisition on its site and Google Photos' product lead David Lieb reiterated the news, dubbing Fly Labs as the "creators of the world's best video editing apps."  I don't know about the world's best, but Fly Labs has some very interesting products under its name. Clips puts fragments of videos together, reorders them, and tags music or voice recordings on top of them. Tempo edits slow-motion, fast-forwarded clips, and time-lapse videos. Fly uses gestures to edit videos, apply cuts and transitions, integrate picture-in-picture, or split the screen.

Calendar apps are a dime a dozen on the Play Store, but few of them have the polish, power, and intuitive interface of Today Calendar. Now the app can add one more bullet point to its list of handy options that make it easier and faster to schedule appointments and tasks: natural language processing.

What that means is that you no longer have to fuss with manually picking dates, times, and durations. You simply type them as you're making a new entry and Today will interpret the specific details and schedule accordingly.

Android Distribution Numbers Out For November, Marshmallow Makes Its Debut At 0.3%

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 09:26 PM PST

android_dist_nov2015

It's been a month since Android 6.0 Marshmallow was released to the public, and Google has just posted their Android Distribution numbers for November. For those unfamiliar with this monthly occurrence, these numbers are updated by Google at roughly the start of every month for developers to look at so they can generalize what version of Android their potential install base is running and act upon it.

A month later, we can now see Android 6.0 made its appearance on the chart with 0.3% of the share. Android 5.1 increased 2.2% whereas 5.0 and 4.4 KitKat dropped 0.1% and 1.1% respectively. Jelly Bean continued its slow decline where Android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread managed to stay constant.

Hopefully Marshmallow increases its growth rate so we can compare how well it fairs against Lollipop the same time last year.

Google buys Fly Labs to integrate video editing tech into Google Photos

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 05:11 PM PST

Google has added another company to its list of acquisitions.

Fly Labs has officially been acquired by Google. The company revealed the news on its website today, saying that it'll be joining the Google Photos team in Mountain View.

We're excited to continue on our mission by joining Google and the Google Photos team in Mountain View, California. Google Photos is a home for your life's memories, powered by Google's machine learning and computer vision technology. It's a perfect match for what we built at Fly Labs, and we're looking forward to folding our technology into Google Photos. We'll be pouring the same passion into Google Photos that we poured into Clips, Fly, Tempo and Crop on the Fly.

Fly Labs made four video editing apps for iOS that let you do things like edit, add transitions, speed up or slow down video, and more. Thanks to the Google acquisition, all of Fly Labs' apps and their in-app purchases are now free, and they'll stay that way for the next 3 months. After that time, they'll be pulled from the App Store. Fly Labs notes that their apps won't receive any further updates.

So yeah, it sounds like Google Photos is going to gain some sort of video editing capabilities. Exactly how Google will build Fly Labs' tools into Google Photos remains to be seen, but it's exciting to hear that Google is beefing up one of its best new products.

The app appears to pretty much be strictly for viewing performance in a dashboard card-style layout, not actually taking any actions in DoubleClick itself. You'll be able to see your network performance, including things like impressions, clicks, your click ratios, CPM, and individual ad performance.
