Photo Magic is Facebook’s solution to quickly share photos with facial recognition

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 02:22 PM PST

Though plenty of analysts have predicted its downfall, Facebook is a juggernaut that won't stop moving. Facebook's latest concoction is Photo Magic, a new feature in Facebook Messenger that uses facial recognition to quickly find photos to share with your friends. Photo Magic goes through your camera roll and uses facial recognition software to find photos of your Facebook friends and then notifies you and asks if you'd like to share the photo with those friends through Messenger.

All too often, you're with friends and people are taking pictures and everyone's saying, "Hey, send me that picture, k?" Alas, however, it's a rare occasion in which the picture actually does get sent. Photo Magic aims to change that by finding the photos for you, identifying the friends in the photo and giving you a one-tap option to send the photo to the people pictured within.

Now, Photo Magic will be opt-in only, as many will likely have privacy concerns about Facebook's software sorting through all of their photos. If you do give Photo Magic a try, however, it could make it very easy to share photos privately with friends, rather than simply dumping half of your gallery onto Facebook and letting your friends sort through to find the pictures of themselves.

Photo Magic is rolling out to Android devices in Australia, with iOS support arriving in just a few days. Facebook is expected to expand the feature to other countries within the coming months.

The TAG Heuer Connected with Android Wear is official, goes on sale today for $1,500

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 10:01 AM PST

It's been known for quite some time that TAG Heuer had plans to unveil its new smartwatch on November 9, and sure enough the watchmaker has done just that. The new TAG Heuer Connected is built with the company's pristine hardware in mind, but also brings in Google's Android Wear platform.

The TAG Heuer Connected boasts a 1.5-inch circular display with a resolution of 360×360, and it's equipped with a dual-core Intel chipset inside, which is clocked at 1.6GHz. The Connected has 1GB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, supports Bluetooth 4.1 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and the battery is measured in at 410mAh. The Connected's casing is made from titanium.

There are some TAG Heuer-inspired watch faces to choose from, and thanks to Android Wear owners will be able to check messages, ask Google for help, show your step count and more.

As far as pricing goes, the TAG Heuer Connected will have a price tag of $1,500. For those that already know they might want to get rid of the Android Wear-based smartwatch in a couple of years, there's a trade-in program in place that will let owners trade in the Connected for a new mechanical TAG Heuer Carrera — for another $1,500.

So, for $1,500, what do you think of the TAG Heuer Connected? Is it your next smartwatch?

Is Another One On The Way?

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 10:01 AM PST

HTC One X9

HTC is struggling.  It's really not secret.  Despite the early success the One series generated in the M7, the companies flagship series has quickly fallen out of favour.  Nevertheless, the company continues to churn out devices hoping to revitalize the line up and it seems yet another One is on the way.

Based on a leak that surfaced on Chinese site Weibo, HTC may be working on a new flagship device, the One X9.  Rumoured specs include a minimum 5″ QHD display, Snapdragon 820 or Helio X20, 4GB RAM, 23MP camera, 4MP UltraPixel front facing camera and a 3500 mAh battery.

If this device is indeed legitimate, I would expect that we'll see it sooner rather than later.  My main rationale is that the "9" in the name would suggest that it's part of the current 9 series of devices which should be coming to an end soon.  Plus, there has been chatter that we could see a Snapdragon 820 device before the calendar turns over.

Android Wear: Introducing TAG Heuer Connected

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 08:49 AM PST

Watches have a long and celebrated history of mixing beauty with engineering breakthroughs. And TAG Heuer has been at the forefront of many of these innovations—from the first chronograph accurate to 1/100th of a second, to the first belt-driven tourbillion, and many more. With the TAG Heuer Connected we're excited to introduce another first: the first luxury watch powered by Android Wear.

Inspired by the TAG Heuer Carrera, this watch includes a titanium case and signature strap in seven striking colors. In addition, its high-resolution, transflective sapphire glass display makes it easy to check the time and other important info—even in the bright sun.
Moving from atoms to bits, the TAG Heuer Connected includes a beautiful set of digital watch faces with classic TAG Heuer dials. You'll be able to personalize what information you want to see: weather, step count, or calories. And because the watch is powered by Android Wear, you can check your messages, receive fitness coaching, and ask Google for help—right from your wrist. (Yes, even if you have an iPhone.)

The TAG Heuer Connected represents an incredible collaboration between watchmakers from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and engineers from Intel and Google in Silicon Valley, California. With our combined expertise in watchmaking, hardware, and software, we've created a watch that we're excited to share with the world! So check out the TAG Heuer website, and learn more about this beautiful, useful watch.

Nexus 6P Back Glass Spontaneously Cracking?

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 08:28 AM PST

Nexus 6P Crack

Often times when a new device launches an issue arises that causes a bit of an uproar.  Apple has had their fair share of "gates"(see Antenna-Gate, Bend-Gate) and Samsung ran into one as wel with their most recent Note (see S-Pen Gate).  Well it seems Google's latest Nexus, the "premium" Nexus 6P may have a gate of its own to deal with.

A reddit thread has been started with a handful of Nexus 6P users reporting that the back glass covering the camera on their Nexus 6P spontaneously cracked.  As someone who has worked in mobile repairs before, I rarely believe it when people make this claim but story has piqued my interest nonetheless.

Basically all of the affected users report a very similar story: the phone was simply sitting nearby when they heard a loud cracking sound.  There are also a number of theories as to why the glass spontaneously cracked.  Some attribute it to temperature change, others to a case possibly being too tight.  It's tough to say what's going to happen at this point but this is a story I intend to follow as I have been contemplating picking up this phone since it debuted.  Hopefully Google and Huawei step up for these unlucky Android-ers.

Any of you Nexus 6P users suffering from a spontaneously cracked camera glass?

Octodad: Dadliest Catch Is An Absurd Physics Game Starring A Perfectly Ordinary Human

imageYou wear a disguise, to look like human guys, but you're not a man, you're a Chicken Boo. The classic Animaniacs sketch, wherein a six-foot chicken passes himself off as human in various Chaplin-style short farces, might very well be one of the inspirations for indie gaming hit Octodad: Dadliest Catch. In this casual physics game you play an eight-legged cephalopod trying to live the American dream, passing himself off as an average Joe as he gets married, enters the workforce, and raises a family.

Mysterious HTC One X9 hits the web with leaked image, specs

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 02:27 AM PST

If the iPhone-esque HTC One A9 isn't your thing, the newly-rumored HTC One X9 may be exactly what you're looking for. While HTC is relying on the HTC One A9′s looks too sell the phone, the HTC One X9 is rumored to pack an impressive array of components which should satisfy those who want bleeding edge technology.

According to various sources on Weibo, the pictures HTC One X9 will feature a QHD display of at least 5 inches, 4GB of RAM, 64 or 128GB of internal storage, a 23 megapixel main camera, 4 UltraPixel front-facing camera and a 3400 mAh battery. The rumor also states that the processor could either be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or MediaTek's deca-core Helio X20.

If you're looking for our opinion, we're not too convinced by the details of the HTC One X9 quite yet. We're not concerned with the phone's name of the basic specs, but it odd that two different processors are listed and that we've not given the exact size of the display. The image of the HTC One X9 also raises a lot of questions. The design of the phone appears to be a cross between the HTC Butterfly, the One A9 and the leaked images of the HTC One M9 which never came to be.

There's no telling if or when the HTC One X9 will be released, but our money's late Q1 of 2016 the phone does end up with a Snapdragon 820 inside of it. What's your take on the HTC One X9 rumor? Is this the phone the One A9 should have been?
