Google Wallet can now transfer money over text messages

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 02:34 PM PST

Google Wallet has been a good way to transfer money to people for a long time, and now, an email won't even be necessary. In the latest version of the app, you'll be able to send money to people using just their phone numbers.

When you send money using a phone number, the person will get a text message with a secure link at which they can enter their debit card and have the money will be transferred to it. It looks simple and elegant in design, though we'll have to see how well it actually works.

To give this a shot, update the app using the Play Store and let us know how it works!

Android Studio 2.0 Preview: Android Emulator

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 01:36 PM PST

Posted by, Jamal Eason, Product Manager, Android

An early preview of the new Android Emulator is now available to try out. As a part of Android Studio 2.0, the latest version of the Android Emulator can help you test your app on a wide range of screens size and configurations beyond the physical Android hardware you use to test. Moreover, using the official Android emulator enables you to test with latest Android versions. Building on this foundation, the top two benefits of new Android emulator are:
  • Speed & Performance: When emulating the latest Android 6.0 release (Marshmallow), we now support Symmetric Multi-Processing and have made significant I/O improvements in both the emulator and ADB. This means you will have faster performance when you are testing your app.
  • Usability & User Interface: The new Android Emulator includes a brand new user interface to make the emulator easy to use. You no longer have to rely on command-line parameters to use the Android emulator. Common tasks and emulator features are now just a mouse click or a keyboard shortcut away.

We previewed the user interface at the Android Dev Summit. You can try it out today along with the new version of ADB for faster APK installation and file transfers to the emulator. Check out the video for a demonstration of the new Android Emulator.

Android Dev Summit 2015: Emulator Demo

We are seeking early feedback to continue to deliver the experience and features that will make you more productive.

New Features in Android Emulator Preview

Performance Improvements

  • CPU Performance

Android Studio now uses CPU acceleration on x86 emulator system images by default. Combined with new Symmetric Multi-Processor (SMP) support in Android 6.0 Marshmallow system images, the Android emulators can perform even faster than many physical Android devices. Multi-core support not only makes your apps and the emulator run faster but it provides the added advantage of speeding up common developer tasks such as installing APKs. Also, with SMP you can test apps that specifically target multi-processor Android devices.
  • Faster ADB

In addition to faster CPU speeds in the emulator, there are a number of under-the-hood improvements that will make the experience faster. One of the bottlenecks in the development process that we worked on is the speed of pushing data between Android Studio and your device using ADB (Android Debug Bridge). When you use Android 6.0 Marshmallow and higher system images with the new Android Emulator, you can now push files across ADB up to five times faster than a real device. This will help you if you push large APK or files during your app development cycle.

User Interface

  • Toolbar
The new interface exposes some of the most common emulator actions in a new toolbar and control panel instead of solely relying on command line options. For the preview, the Android Emulator toolbar enables actions, such as volume control, screen rotation, and screen-shots of the emulator window.

  • Window Zooming & Scaling

Now you can resize your window simply by dragging a corner. You can also zoom and scroll to get a closer look at a portion of your screen.
Left: Zooming
Right: Window Scaling
  • Drag & Drop

With the new emulator, you can not only drag and drop APKs for quick installation, but you can also drag and drop any file to your emulator's internal SD card to help in testing.

Drag and Drop Files
  • Extended UI Controls

In the extended controls window, additional options help you validate and test features in your app. As shown below, you can initiate a range of emulator actions such as making a virtual call, sending a virtual SMS, or controlling the power level of the emulator. You can additionally send a single GPS location point to the emulator or play back a custom set of KML or GPX points as well.

Phone Controls

Battery Controls

We are continuing to add more functionality and we will keep you up to date as we add more features.

What's Next & Setup

This is just the beginning of developments on the Android Emulator, so expect more features such as support more APIs levels, and adding more sensors with future versions of Android Studio. The new emulator along with Android Studio are available today on the Android Studio canary channel and tools preview channel.

Click here for details on how to setup the preview of the new Android Emulator.

We appreciate your feedback. Connect with us, the Android Studio development team, on Google+.

Rumoured LG G5 Specs Surface

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 12:20 PM PST

LG-Logo

LG has been steadily improving each and every year over the last few years.  Their hardware and software has been steadily improving and this year's flagship device, the G4, is undoubtedly one of the top smartphones on the market right now.  Some rumoured specs for the G5 recently surfaced and if they're anywhere near accurate, LG's 2016 flagship will be another great step in the right direction for the company.

The rumoured specs hit the web courtesy of a relatively unknown leakster named Zealer on Weibo.  According to Zealer, the LG G5 will pack a large 5.6″ QHD display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, Adreno 530 GPU, a 21MP camera and 8MP front facing camera.  All of these specs are more than reasonable so it wouldn't surprise anyone if these were packed inside the G5.  The leaskter went on to say that LG plans to unveil the device in February, likely to keep pace with Samsung's rumoured launch date for the S7.

Galaxy S7 Renders Surface Again, This Time It’s The Plus!

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 12:05 PM PST

Galaxy S7 Plus Render - 1

Just a couple of days ago some Galaxy S7 renders surfaced online.  Today we have some more renders to pass your way but this time of the larger Galaxy S7 Plus.

Like the previous renders, these shots also show off a device that looks very much like the Galaxy S6.  It's so similar, in fact, that no one would blame you for thinking that you were just looking at an S6.  Like the previous leak, however, this device shows a much more rectangular home button.  These renders also show a standard micro USB port as opposed to a USB Type-C port.  It also looks as if the back is slightly curved which, in my opinion, would be a welcome change as the S6 didn't fit in the hand super nicely.

Rumour has it that this device could debut in Q1 of 2016 and at the rate that leaks are hitting the web, it wouldn't be a surprise if Samsung upheld that rumoured time frame.

Google Photos adds shared albums for better collaboration

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 09:31 AM PST

Smartphones have nearly replaced the personal digital camera, with a vast amount of users ditching their point-and-shoots for the convenience of a smartphone. As a result of that, smartphone users now have enormous amounts of photos to deal with, which becomes even more complex when you're looking to share and organize the photos with others. Google has been looking for ways to ease that process and it's now adding a new feature to Google Photos to make collaboration easier.

Shared albums are a simple concept. They allow users to send other users a link to their albums. In the past, the users who received this link could only view the photos, but with shared albums, these users can now collaborate and add their own photos and videos, while also receiving notifications when other users upload photos and videos to the album. Users in the collaborative album will also be able to save and download photos and videos from the album, making it easier to hold onto memories.

Shared albums works across all platforms with Google Photos, so you can use it on Android, iOS or anything with an internet browser. With greater collaboration, Shared albums adds a very nice feature to Google Photos and makes it much easier to work with friends and family to organize photos from an event.

Shared albums is now rolling out, so you should see the feature very soon.

walmartUnlike some of my colleagues in the tech media, I don't have any particular beef with Walmart. Yes, they sell cheap imported crap, and yes, they under-pay their employees, stiffing both the people who make stuff and the people who sell stuff. But if you object to that strongly enough to actually change your buying habits, you'll soon run out of places to buy things. I do, however, object to the idea of a mobile payment system that works at exactly one store.

Walmart goes all-in with its own mobile payment option, Walmart Pay

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 07:44 AM PST

Mobile payments are all the rage these days, as just about any company that could even conceive of launching its own option seems to be doing just that. There's a theme in the naming scheme, too.

The latest company to get in on the fun is Walmart, which just announced its own mobile payment option for those who want to use their phone to check out the gigantic chain mega-retailer. It's called, you (probably) guessed it, Walmart Pay, and Walmart's plan is to have it available nationwide by the middle of 2016.

Walmart Pay is available both for Android and iOS, and it's embedded within the Walmart app that's been available on both mobile platforms for quite some time. It's a new option within the app, and upon selecting it, you be prompted to add your credit or debit card or even a pre-paid or Walmart gift card. You'll then have the option to use your phone to pay at checkout.

To use Walmart Pay, you'll scan a barcode that's displayed on your phone's screen within the app, and an electronic receipt will be presented within the app after the purchase is complete.

Walmart Pay is just another "Pay" option in an increasing list of options out there now, including Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and whoever else out there plans on releasing an alternative, too. (LG Pay!) Let's hope some companies in the future start using more interesting titles.

How often do you use your phone to pay for things?
