Is This The Next Generation Moto X?

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 03:22 PM PST

Moto X 4 Gen

The new year will soon be upon us and that means a new generation of smartphones are under development, readying themselves for their moment in the spotlight.  While most of the world will be fixated on Samsung and Apple, I'm excited to see what Motorola brings to the table this year.  I've been consistently drawn to them over the last few years but I have yet to pull the trigger on any of their flagships.  The first Moto X was too small for me.  The second generation's camera wasn't up to par.  After seeing the Moto X Style this year, I was all ready to pull the trigger  but Motroola crushed my dreams and decided not to bring their flagship to Canada!

Well maybe the fourth time will be the charm?  Speaking of 4th's we may have our first look at the 4th Generation Moto X.  The above image made its way to the web today and according to the tipster, we're looking at the 4th Generation Moto X.  As you can see, this device is all about the metal.  I personally like what Motorola has been doing design wise but the call for metal on flagships has been ringing loud over the past year and Motorola may be responding to that.

You'll also notice a rather larger camera sensor on the back of the device which indicates that Motorola is taking the photographing capabilities of the device pretty seriously.  They haven't always shone in this department but Motorola made huge strides this past year (of course, with the phone we DIDN'T get) so it'd be good for them to carry on that momentum.  Another odd design change is the rear speaker grill.  Motorola has made a name for themselves with their crisp loud front facing speakers so it'd be odd for them to move them back to the rear.  As for the rest of the design, it is still very Motorola-esque with the curved corners and rear Motorola dimple.

This definitely looks like an early prototype so things could change a fair amount with the final design.  Plus, we don't know for sure that this is the 4th Gen Moto X so take it as it is.

Hangouts rumored to lose SMS/MMS functionality

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 02:36 PM PST

Google Hangouts has long been used as both a way to use the Hangouts chat functionality and text others. The app even combined the two into one chat log and let you decide which to use at different times. Though this functionality is nice, the app itself has been problematic for many.

A new rumor claims that Google will be stripping Hangouts of SMS and MMS functionality. Thankfully, the rumor also states that Project Fi and Google Voice functionality will remain alongside the standard Hangouts chat. And this makes sense, as the Google Messenger SMS app has become polished and user-friendly.

Once the change comes, if it comes at all, users will be asked to download the Google Messenger app, though you'll be able to use any third-party SMS app you want. Google employees are apparently already testing the app without SMS. What do you think of this change? Do you still use Hangouts for text messaging? Leave a comment!

Google App For Android TV v2.0 Updates The Search Interface To The New Brand Style [APK Download]

Out with the old and in with the new. That's just about the best way to describe the latest update to the Google app for Android TV. Version 2.0 doesn't seem to bring much in the way of features, but what it lacks in functional changes is more than made up for with visuals. Basically everything having to do with a search interface looks at least a little different, if not completely.

T-Mobile offering $100 off Samsung flagships and a free year of Netflix

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 08:26 AM PST

We're in the peak of the holiday season and all of the best deals are swirling around. T-Mobile is offering another holiday deal, though shockingly, it's not targeted at another carrier. This deal is for new and current customers alike, and it's offering a lower price for Samsung's most popular flagships. Between Friday, December 18, and next Wednesday, December 23, customers can receive $100 off of a new Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+ or Note 5.

In addition to that discount, T-Mobile is offering a free year of Netflix for anyone who picks up one of those Samsung smartphones. The Netflix deal will be available a little bit longer, from December 18 through December 31. Even if you miss getting a discount on the device, you can still get a free year of Netflix if you buy one of the phones before the end of the year.

T-Mobile has been going full force with deals during the holiday season, offering several deals aimed specifically at the customers of other carriers. It's finally reached the end of its frenzy with this promotion, but we'll likely see the scrappy carrier offering more promotions when the new year begins.

No more blurrycam shots, this is what the HTC One X9 will look like

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 08:26 AM PST

The HTC One X9 has posed for blurrycam shots on more than one occasion, but thanks to ANZHOU, we now have nine photos taken with a good camera in flattering light. The Chinese site doesn't say how it managed to score some hands-on time with the HTC One X9, but they did confirm that the rumored specs that were shared a while back were on point.

Like the HTC One A9, the One X9 will have two different versions that will feature 2GB of RAM with 16GB of storage or 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Other features include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, MediaTek Helio X10 MT6795 processor, microSD card slot, UltraPixel front-facing camera, 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS, 3,000mAh battery and BoomSound speakers on the front.

Based on how many leaks we've seen so far, we wouldn't be surprised if the HTC One X9 is unveiled at CES. HTC typically doesn't have a big showing at CES, but the company has officially announced a handful of new devices during the trade show over the years. The HTC One X9 will certainly be making its way to Asian markets, but we wouldn't be surprised if HTC expanded the X9′s availability to Europe a few months after launch.

Leak: all-metal 2016 Moto X to feature flat tire camera module design

Posted: 16 Dec 2015 05:11 AM PST

Motorola's Moto X lineup usually doesn't get refreshed until early fall, but a new leak claims to show off the design of the 4th-gen Moto X. The full image shows that the device keeps the basic outline of the Moto X intact, but the back of the phone appears to be wrapped in metal – a far cry from the customizable wood, leather and polycarbonate finished that we've seen on the Moto X in the past. The design of the camera is changing as well- lending homage to the Moto 360′s flat tire by incorporating the dual-LED flash into the bottom portion of its elevated, circular module.

Since we're six to eight months out from the unveiling of 2016 Moto X lineup, the design shown in the image will likely be a different than what we see in the final product. Quite a few people will be glad to see that Motorola is considering an all-metal design for its flagship phone, but there will certainly be a lot of outcry from devoted Motorola fans if they choose to do away with Moto Maker and the hundreds of customization options which are currently available.
