Rumour: Sony Xperia Z6 Family To Feature 5 Different Sized Smartphones

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 03:26 PM PST

Sony Z5 Family

Sony expanded their flagship line this year by launching not one, not two, but three different smartphones under the Z5 line.  Well according to a new rumour, the Z6 line family is going to be even larger than that!  A post on Chinese micro blogging site Weibo is claiming that Sony has 5 different sized smartphones planned for the Z6 family.  These devices include the Z6 Mini with a 4″ display, the Z6 Compact with a 4.6″ display, the Z6 with a 5.2″ display, the Z6 Plus with a 5.8″ display and the Z6 Ultra with a 6.4″ display.

The post went on to say that with the exception of the Z6 Mini, all of the devices will run the hotly anticipated (hopefully not too hot!) Snapdragon 820 while the Z6 Mini will get the Snapdragon 620.  Although not expressed in the post, you'd have to imagine that Sony will continue their trend of packing these devices with true flagship level specs regardless of the screen size.  The one exception, of course, may be the Z6 Mini which already has a lesser processor attached to it.

Sony's struggles to remain profitable in the mobile market have been well documented but hopefully this new strategy of creating a range of high calibre devices of varying sizes will pay off for them.  Of course, it would help if they actually released all devices in all markets but that's a discussion for another day.

HTC HD2 receives Marshmallow port

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 02:09 PM PST

Yes, you are reading that title correctly. After years upon years of receiving unofficial ports of every version of Android and a few other operating systems to boot, the HTC HD2 has just received a working port of Android 6.0, Marshmallow.

Working is a relative term, of course, as pretty much nothing besides the screen, audio or WiFi really works. But it still exists. A senior member of XDA has released the port, which is a build of CM13. If for some insane reason you still have an HD2, head on over to the source link and check out how to get Marshmallow on your piece of hacker history.

q500px is the home of a great deal of lovely photography, and the app has been updated today to be a bit more lovely itself. At least this is the assertion made by 500px. The new v4.3.0 is live in the Play Store with a completely revamped UI and a few small feature additions. However, Chainfire's 500px wallpaper app 500 Firepaper got an update too, and it's a much sadder story.

First, the official app—it's quite a bit different than the old version.

OnePlus 2 Now Invite Free Forever Starting December 5th

xmas_dec3_Forum

Since the beginning, OnePlus has been criticized for its controversial invite system which only allows prospective customers with an invite to purchase a phone. However, for all those looking forward to purchasing a OnePlus 2 this holiday season, there's good news!

OnePlus has announced that they will finally remove the invite system for the OnePlus 2 starting at midnight December 5th. This is most likely due to low demand for the phone and because the phone has been in production for quite some time. Nevertheless, the newer OnePlus X will still require an invite to purchase, but not from December 5th to December 7th.

The OnePlus 2 costs $409 for the 16GB model and $479 for the 64GB model.

Ready to hit the slopes and fall down a lot? Then I have good news—Snowboard Party 2 from Ratrod Studios is now available on Android. The first Snowboard Party was hugely popular, and this one looks like an upgraded version that kept all the good parts of the original. Although, it also kept the in-app purchases.

Snowboard Party 2 is your typical score-attack stunt game, but there are over 150 levels and a ton of achievements to collect.

WiFi Alliance certifies the HTC One X9, launch coming in 2016

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 09:05 AM PST

Anyone hoping that the rumored HTC One X9 would launch in 2015 will be disappointed to hear that the phone isn't expected to be unveiled until next year. @LlabTooFeR revealed this new information along with a link to the phone's WiFi certification document, which was granted to the One X9 back on September 15th. The document doesn't confirm or deny any of the rumors that we've seen do far, but it does reveal that the HTC One X9 will come with a, b, g, n and ac WiFi connections on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, as well as support for Miracast and Wi-Fi Direct.

Based on previous rumors, the HTC One X9 is expected to feature a MediaTek processor, 5.5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM. 16GB of internal storage, 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization, front-facing UltraPixel camera and a 3,000mAh battery. With WiFi and TENAA (China's version of the FCC) certification taken care of, we wouldn't be surprised if the HTC One X9 is announced for Asian markets during CES in early January.

Android and Me tablet holiday shopping guide – 2015

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 08:35 AM PST

Black Friday weekend has come and gone, but we know there are many of you who haven't even started your holiday shopping yet. If you're all set on smartphones and accessories (you should seriously check our Give the gift of power article), an Android tablet may be exactly what you or a loved one needs. The list below highlights the tablets that we would actually consider spending our money on.

The best of the best

Nexus 9 – $298.00
The Nexus 9 is already a year old, but it's still one of the most powerful Android tablets on the market and the only one that's running a stock Android build. The tablet is powered by a 2.3GHz dual-core 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor with 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB or internal storage, a 6,700mAh battery, 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera and stereo front-facing speakers.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 - $399.99 (9.7-inch), $349.99 (8-inch)
If you're a fan of Samsung's hardware style and don't mind TouchWiz, the 9.7-inch and 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 may be a good option for you. Both feature 2048×1536 Super AMOLED displays , octa-core processors, 3GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and a fingerprint scanner. The 8-inch model comes with a 4,000mAh battery, while the larger 9.7-inch model has a 5,870mAh battery.

Amazon Fire HDX 8.9$499.99
Amazon's Fire tablets aren't usually known for incredible performance, but the Fire HDX 8.9 and its Snapdragon 800 chip can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. It features an 8.9-inch 2560 x 1600 pixel display, 32GB of storage, 2BG of RAM, an 8-megapixel main camera and stereo speakers. But what truly sets the Fire HDX 8.9 apart from other Android tablets is its integration into Amazon Prime services and the new Amazon Underground, which gives you $10,000 worth of paid apps and games for free.

Acer Predator 8$299.99
Acer's Predator 8 comes equipped with an 8-inch 1,920 x 1,200 resolution IPS LCD display, Intel Atom X7 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, microSD slot support, and a 4420mAh battery that should provide up to eight and a half hours of battery life. The tablet's gaming-centric experience is also enhanced by four front-facing speakers (one in each corner of the tablet) and dual-haptic vibration motors that allow even vibration across the entire tablet no matter how it is held.

NVIDIA Shield Tablet$199.99
It may be sitting at the bottom of this list, but the NVIDIA Shield Tablet is our favorite 8-inch tablet. Equipped with a NVIDIA Tegra K1 chip, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and front-facing stereo speakers. You'd be hard pressed to find a better Android tablet to satisfy your mobile gaming needs.

Budget options

We know that the tablets listed above a bit pricey, so we've also included a handful of budget-friendly Android tablet options that are worth considering. You can easily find an Android tablet for $200 or less, but only a few are actually worth buying. Don't buy these tablets if you want a gaming device, but they are good enough for all your social media and news apps and can easily double as an eReader.

If there are any other Android tablets you'd recommend, leave a comment below and let us know which device you think should be added to the list.

Marshmallow For The HTC One M8 Is Nearly Here!

Posted: 03 Dec 2015 07:15 PM PST

HTC M8

Good news HTC One M8 users!  Marshmallow is nearly here!  HTC's Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, Tweeted yesterday that Marshmallow would begin rolling out to unlocked M8s in the next 24 hours.

In response to some questions from fans, Versi also stated that they are already working with carriers to get the update out for carrier locked M8s.  It would appear that the software has already been handed over to the carriers so hopefully it doesn't take them too long to do their internal testing.

I have to say, I've really appreciated the transparency HTC has been displaying over the past year or so in regards to updates.  It's really quite refreshing!

Andy Rubin Planning To Start His Own Smartphone Company?

Posted: 03 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

Andy Rubin Google's senior vice president of mobile and digital content begins selling a wallet phone directly to U.S. consumers

Andy Rubin, one of the co-founders of Android, may soon be returning to his roots.  After leaving Android and Google a couple years back, Rubin is reportedly looking to get back into the smartphone game.  According to sources in the mobile industry, Rubin has allegedly been trying to recruit personnel to join him in creating a new phone company.

It's not completely clear at this point if Rubin would be heading up the company or simply providing financial backing but its exciting news nonetheless.  Any company that has Rubin's involvement has my attention and I would imagine that devices coming out of that company are going to be using pure, or close to pure, Android which is always a plus.

Although much of this news is unconfirmed, speculation is that Rubin might target the high end market as the budget and mid range Android market is absolutely flooded with devices.  Google likewise entered into the high end market this year with the Nexus 6P and it'd be great to have another pure Android option with flagship caliber hardware.

Google highlights the best apps, games, and more from 2015

Posted: 03 Dec 2015 04:44 PM PST

Last year, Google released an infographic that showed some of the most popular apps of 2014. Now Google has something similar by releasing lists of what it thinks were the best Android apps and games of 2015.

Google's best apps list includes a lot of familiar titles, like HBO NOW, Showtime, Twitter, Twitch, and Google Photos. There are other lists for specific genres that could help you find apps that fit your needs, including ones like Tools & Productivity, Personalization Apps, and Great on Tablets. Those lists include Nova Launcher, Trulia, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, and Kitchen Stories.

Meanwhile, Google has named titles like Agar.io, Fallout Shelter, Candy Crush Soda Saga, and Crossy Road some of the best games of 2015. There are also genres on this page such as Action & Adventure, Arcade Games, Indie Games, and Role Playing Games.

Google has had Editor's Choice markers in the Play Store for a while now, so the company highlighting apps that it likes is nothing new. These best of lists are a nice way to look back at 2015 and download some titles you may have missed throughout the year, though, and it's nice to have all of these apps and games grouped together in one place.

Google has also released lists that highlight the Play Store's best selling albums, books, movies, and so on. You can find all of the Best lists at the link below.

What do you think of Google's picks? Are there any other apps from 2015 that you think deserve some recognition?

Google’s Cardboard Camera app will let you take 360 degree VR photos

Posted: 03 Dec 2015 04:14 PM PST

Google Cardboard has long enabled us to enjoy virtual reality on the cheap, but thanks to a new app, it lets us create VR goodness, too.

Google today released Cardboard Camera, and it's pretty much what it sounds like. The app will let you turn your Android smartphone into a virtual reality camera and take a VR photo with it. The photos will turn out sort of like a 360 degree panorama, and you can record sound to better immerse yourself in the moment that you're capturing.

googlecardboardcamerascreenshot

Cardboard Camera is a free download from the Play Store that supports phones running Android 4.4. and up. The app lets folks create their own VR content on the cheap, just like Cardboard lets us enjoy VR content without spending much (if any) cash. Google continues to work to make VR accessible to everyone, and Cardboard Camera is jut the latest example of that effort. Good on ya, Google.

[Why Go Anywhere] Machu Picchu Gets The Street View Treatment In Google Maps, Llamas Not Included

As a former student of archaeology, Machu Picchu is a place that has always fascinated me. As someone direly afraid of heights, Machu Picchu is a place I will almost certainly never go, barring the invention of personal air transport. As such, today I was quite pleased to learn that Google's globetrotting street view team has mapped the ancient city-temple-palace-agrarian-center with a backpack of many, many cameras.

Machu Picchu sits nearly 8000 feet above sea level, and its real purpose still largely eludes archaeologists and ancient historians to this day.
