nexus2cee_YouTube_thumb.pngYouTube rolled out a big update earlier this year that focused on tabs across the top of the screen. For most people there were three, but a fourth one showed up sometimes too. Now that fourth "trending" tab is official. In a post on the YouTube blog, we're told that the "new" trending tab will list all the hottest things posted to YouTube on a daily basis.

The Android app has the tab of course, but there's a trending section on the web too.

Cortana arrives on Android and OnePlus One

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 02:32 PM PST

Cortana is Microsoft's cross-platform assistant that became available on Windows 10 during its release, and now it has come to iOS, Android, and an optimized version for the Cyanogen OS-powered OnePlus One.

Much like Google Now, Cortana will show you relevant information like reminders, events, flights, and more when you need them. It also features integration with Windows 10, so you can set location reminders on your computer or even have the phone send a text to a person after a missed call from your computer.

Unfortunately, the Android app will be a little limited due to lack of integration (or design choices from Microsoft). It won't be able to toggle settings, open apps, or use the "Hey Cortana" phrase at anytime. But with integration with Cyanogen OS, Cortana will be able to do these things on the OnePlus One and on other Cyanogen OS devices in the future.

Cortana looks to be a great assistant, and Microsoft's partnership with Cyanogen means that there will be more Cyanogen-powered devices that will receive integration soon. Hit the source link for more info or to give it a shot!

Alleged OnePlus 3 Renders Surface

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 12:19 PM PST

OnePlus 3 - 1 OnePlus 3 - 2

The OnePlus 2 is not even half a year old but rumours regarding the sequel are surfacing and we have a pretty decent one to pass your way.  Alleged renders of the OnePlus sequel, which we assume will be called the OnePlus 3, have surfaced showcasing the design of the device.  While still looking fairly similar to its predecessors, the OnePlus 3 showcases some pretty slim bezels along the sides.  It also appears that the device will sport at least one front facing speaker as there appears to be a speaker grill on the pretty svelte chin of the device.  It's possible that the grill at the top could serve as both an ear piece and a secondary speaker.

The renders also showcase 2 breaks in the frame of the device, one on each side.  I assume these are either buttons or possibly even ports or SIM/microSD slots, although the placement of the one on the bottom right seems odd to me.  You'll also notice that there doesn't appear to be a fingerprint reader on the front of the device so they may have followed Sony's approach and gone with the side fingerprint reader which would suggest that one of those breaks along the side may be housing that.  An even better solution would be if they implemented Qualcomm's sweet 3D fingerprint technology but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

The source of the leak went on to say that the OnePlus 3 will pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and a 1080p display.  If this is indeed the case, the device should be an absolute screamer since the powerful chipset won't be pushing out tons of pixels.  This could also really help with battery life as well as we all know that higher resolution display require more power.

Of course, this is very much a rumour at this point and we really don't know when OnePlus will out their next phone.  The renders look pretty decent though and if they can really get their manufacturing and distribution process going more smoothly, OnePlus could really begin to flourish.

securityIf you have more than a dozen friends on Facebook, odds are pretty good that at least one of them has started tagging every person on Earth with suspiciously misspelled advertisements for knockoff Ray-Ban sunglasses. Facebook would really prefer that this not happen, or at least not happen quite so often. To that end the company introduced the Security Checkup feature to the web version of the social network, and now it's available on Android as well.

Boost Mobile launches free music streaming for five services

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 11:09 AM PST

Data usage and, in particular, the effect of streaming on data usage, is a hot topic with carriers these days. T-Mobile kicked off the game with Music Freedom, which allowed music streaming without impacting your data allotment through a number of different services, the list of which has continued to grow. Other carriers have begun to experiment with their own versions of this concept, and the latest to join the party is Boost Mobile.

As a value carrier, Boost Mobile is always looking for ways to offer a better deal to its customers. The carrier is now offering data-free music streaming on five different services: Pandora, Slacker Radio, 8tracks, iHeart Radio and Samsung Milk Music. While the list isn't large and doesn't contain some of the major players like Spotify and Google Play Music, it still adds a nice perk for Boost Mobile customers, who will likely be pleased with the extra value they're getting.

Boost Mobile has said that it will continue to add more partners in the future, so it shouldn't be long before we start to see services like Spotify added. It should be noted that this feature is included as part of Boost Mobile's growing data plans, which rewards customers with free allotments of extra data if they make their payments on time.

Google Play Music family plans launching this week; $14.99 a month for up to 6 members

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 10:08 AM PST

The Play Music family plan that we heard about back in September has finally become a reality. You can subscribe in the next few days for $14.99 a month, and that will include you and up to five additional family members. The plan will be available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, France, and Germany at launch with more coming soon.

The family plan grants the exact same benefits as individual subscriptions, including no ads and unlimited access to the 35 million song library. This also naturally now carries with it the benefits of YouTube Red, a potentially big difference maker for families with kids that binge YouTube content.

The family plan gives Play Music parity with Apple Music at $14.99 and launches them ahead of Spotify, which has stuck with a $5 surcharge per extra user.

For music and YouTube fans with a family, the Play Music family plan just became a no brainer.

HTC ‘Perfume’ rumored to be next flagship with Android 6.1 and Sense 8

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 09:10 AM PST

Despite the fact that the One A9 is still relatively new, some people are already keeping their eyes to the future, anticipating the next true flagship device from the manufacturer. According to a new rumor, HTC's next device may not be the O2 as previously suggested.

A well-known leaker of HTC details, LlabTooFeR, has tweeted out that the device known as the O2 is "dead" and that HTC is focusing on something else entirely now. It's reportedly codenamed "Perfume," and only a couple of details have found their way to the surface as of now. According to the rumor, HTC's Perfume will feature Android 6.1 right out of the gate and will have Sense 8 running atop it.

The Perfume codename will clearly be dropped by the time the device gets to being officially announced, so don't expect that to be the title you'd have to tell your friends. As far as any other details go, that's still up in the air at this point. It's likely that HTC will continue to use metal frames for its devices, including on the Perfume.

Are you looking forward to whatever new flagship HTC announces in 2016?

Google Play Music: Now playing for your family

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 09:07 AM PST

In a family of music lovers, there's a soundtrack playing throughout our daily lives. My husband likes to listen to The Smiths radio while he works; I like Entering Beast Mode stations when I hit the gym; and we listen to Michael Bublé as a family while we cook dinner. What can I say, we're a pretty fun bunch! But it means my family ends up paying for multiple subscription music accounts which can add up over time.

For families like mine, we're happy to start offering the Google Play Music family plan today. With the family plan, you and up to five family members can subscribe to Google Play Music - together - for just $14.99 per month. You'll unlock all of the same features you'd get from having individual subscriptions, including ad free, unlimited access to more than 35 million songs and the ability for each family member to stream simultaneously on any device, all for one low price. Now, you can keep your listening experiences separate from your partner and get music recommendations tailored to the music you like. So, my husband's Depeche Mode singles will never show up in my account - only my true favorites will be front and center. And a family plan on Google play will also get your family access to YouTube Red in the US.

You and your family will be able to sign up for a Google Play Music family plan in the coming days on Android devices in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, France and Germany, with more countries coming soon. You and your family members can listen on Android, iOS and the web.

Bye Bye Nexus 6!

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 08:38 AM PST

Motorola Nexus 6

Not only was the Nexus 6 a gargantuan phone with a massive 6″ display, but  the Nexus 6 ushered several changes to the Nexus program.  Rather than creating another reasonably priced device aimed particularly at developers, Google and Motorola partnered together to offer a device with true flagship level specs with a premium level price tag aimed at a much broader audience.

Of course, this decision was a little polarizing as many cried over the price hike but in the end I think the move got the Nexus name out there more than past Nexus'.  And now as the Nexus 6P carriers on the tradition of being the premium Nexus smartphone, we can now say a farewell to the Nexus 6 as Google has finally pulled the device from their store.

Of course, if you really want to grab a Nexus 6 still, you can often find it on sale through retailers such as Expansys or even ebay.

The Nexus 5X is now $50 cheaper

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 08:03 AM PST

Still looking for the perfect Christmas present? The 16GB Nexus 5X is now selling for $329.99, $50 cheaper than its usual asking price. The same $50 discount has been applied to the 32GB model, bringing its price down to $379.99. We recommend going with the 32GB model since 16GB of storage can be chewed up by downloading a handful of games or recording less than an hour of video.

You could easily find a cheaper Android smartphone, but the Nexus 5X offers quite an incredible value. The handset features a Snapdragon 808 with an Adreno 418 GPU, 2GB of RAM 16/32GB of internal storage, a 12.3-megapixel imaging sensor on the back, 5.2-inch display, fingerprint scanner and a USB Type-C port.

The $50 discount on the Nexus 5X is available at the Google StoreAmazon, Best Buy and a handful of other retailers. The deal will be available through December 30, but we recommend buying the phone as soon as possible to ensure that it shows up before Christmas.
