There's a bit of overlap between the apps, but here are all three changelogs.

Google's developers are back to work now that the holidays (and CES) are over, and the first major app update is here. Maps v9.19 is out and it brings a host of pretty awesome new features. There is a new settings screen for your timeline that gives a bit more control over its operation and what is shown. A new audio toggle has been added to the navigation modes so it's a little easier to quickly shut off those over zealous turn-by-turn notifications.

The Nexus 5X Has Dropped In Price!

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 01:45 PM PST

Nexus 5X Official - 1

If you were wanting to buy the Nexus 5X but weren't to keen on its $500 starting price then I've got some good news for you!  It appears Google has cut the cost on their lower priced  Nexus device as it is currently listing at $439 for the 16GB in the Google Store!  That"s a healthy $60 off the original price.  The 32GB has likewise received a price cut as that is listing at $499, down from $559.

There's no mention of this being a promotional price but it also doesn't state that this is a permanent price drop either.  So just to be safe, you may want to act fast if this is a phone you've been hoping to pick up.

With this new pricing, the Nexus 5X becomes a pretty solid option for people looking to buy a phone outright.  The 16GB base storage is a little weak though with no option for expandable storage but savings are savings!

Oh, and just in case you're wondering, the 6P has NOT dropped in price.

Classy poster captures how little we’ll miss Internet Explorer

The Web Address by Everyone Ever Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer is dead, and some nerdy designers are taking their good-riddance to Kickstarter. The campaign will produce classy, poster-sized screen prints of a fictional speech that perfectly captures how little anyone will actually miss the maligned web browser. It's seeking a measly $500 to start production, with extra money going toward making the prints

Nexus 5X price drops to $349, matches launch price of Nexus 5

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 12:14 PM PST

Despite being produced by the same company and even being given a name to denote its heritage, the Nexus 5X hasn't lived up to its predecessor in the eyes of most Android fans. Naturally, launching in the shadow of its larger and more powerful sibling the Nexus 6P didn't make things easy for the 5X. While it matches the 6P in a few areas, like camera hardware, it falls short in many others that even the average user can appreciate.

We've seen a number of temporary price cuts on the Nexus 5X already, but this $30 price cut to $349 appears to be permanent and should be spreading out to the rest of the retailers in the coming days.

This cut brings the Nexus 5X price down to the launch price of the original Nexus 5, which should quell some complaints. While I personally would still recommend saving up for the 6P, the 5X at $349 is certainly a worthwhile consideration for a developer looking for an inexpensive stock device or a price-conscious consumer that wants to stay updated.

At $349, do you think the Nexus 5X will see an uptick in sales or is the mid-range competition just too stiff these days?

2016 Moto Devices Will Feature Fingerprint Readers

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 11:30 AM PST

Moto X 4 Gen

Motorola was one of the first to introduce fingerprint readers onto mobile devices but after its rather lacklustre reception on the Atrix (mainly due to it being terribly unreliable) the company abandoned the security feature.  Even when everyone jumped back on board this past year, Motorola still opted not to employ the feature on their 2015 line up.  Well it's a new year and as we learned earlier this week, Motorola is no more as Lenovo has put that name to bed.

The Moto name will live on, however, in the high end Lenovo Moto line up (that felt all kinds of weird to type out) and according to SVP of Lenovo Chen Xudong, the fingerprint reader will return in 2016.  According to Chen, all Moto branded devices will feature a fingerprint reader this year.  He also went on to say that no Moto devices will feature a display less than 5″.  That means that the super budget Moto E and possibly even the Moto G may have also gone the way of the dinosaur (or maybe they'll get re branded).

One thing that Chen didn't mention is what type of fingerprint reader Motorola Lenovo will employ.  I think it's pretty safe to say it won't be a swipe style reader as those are pretty terrible as we all know.  The touch type seems like the most logical but if the above image that is allegedly a prototype of the Moto X 4th Gen is accurate, there doesn't appear to be anything on the back.  While the reader could be on the front, that doesn't seem likely to me as Motorla the Moto brand employs a pretty clean front with on screen buttons.  So what options are left?  Either a side button fingerprint reader, a la Sony, or perhaps Motorola Lenovo utilizes Qualcomm's awesome 3D finger print scanner that employs ultrasonic technology to read your print.

Google experimenting with nearby, what’s hot and recent searches in Google Search

Nearby is focused on finding restaurants, gas stations, ATMs or coffee shops based on your current location.

Recent Searches — wait for it — shows your recent searches, which has been the default behavior for Google Search to date.

Finally, we have a what's hot option that shows some current trending Google searches.

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to check out the feature ourselves, as this would appear to either be a truly experimental feature that not everyone will see or it is slowly rolling out and won't hit all devices for some time.

What do you think of these options? Would you find this more useful than simply seeing recent searches by default or are you happy with Google Search as it is now?

Google adds yoga search cards to get your eagle pose down for the new year

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 07:44 AM PST

I'm sure at least some of us have vowed to get healthy in the new year, and while yoga isn't going to be the fastest weight loss plan, it can be a valuable part of a fitness-focused lifestyle.

The Google search cards team is certainly of this opinion, as they are in the process of rolling out a series of cards that will show you the progression of many yoga poses with images and text tips.

Safe to say you aren't going to become a master yogi under the tutelage of the search cards, but if you are just looking to get started with yoga, this should keep you from mangling yourself the first time you try that standing bow pose.

You can now unlock the bootloader on the Verizon Motorola Moto X (2014)

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 07:14 AM PST

Verizon Motorola Moto X (2014) owners are in for a surprise. Motorola has received the "green light" to start unlocking bootloaders for the Verizon-branded phone. The news was shared by a forum manager on Motorola's official product and support forum. Unlocking the bootloader on Motorola devices is typically an easy process thanks to the company's website, but the service has only been available for those who purchased unlocked phones.

Hey, everyone. Just wanted to let you know that we did get the green light to unlock the bootloader on Verizon 2014 Moto X (2nd Gen) devices. Unfortunately, we can't do this for devices on other carriers.

We're not sure why the bootloader on the Verizon Motorola Moto X (2014) couldn't be unlocked, but we're hoping that other carrier-branded versions of the phone will get the same treatment. Unlocking the bootloader on a phone give you the ability to flash custom ROMs, but because doing so voids the phone's warranty, we typically recommend unlocking a bootloader only if you're an advanced user. If that's you, head on over to Motorola's site to get things started.

Sony Xperia Z5 Pink now official

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 08:14 PM PST

When Sony introduced the Xperia Z5, it showed four different color options for its new flagship. If none of them appealed to you, Sony's now got a fifth hue to choose from.

The Sony Xperia Z5 will be available in pink starting in February 2016. Sony isn't saying much about the pink Z5's availability other than that, but wherever it ends up launching, we wouldn't expect the "light dusky pink" phone to cost any more than the other four color options.

If you need a refresher on the Xperia Z5's specs, this flagship Android phone is packing a 5.2-inch 1920×1080 display, 23-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front-facing shooter, octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a microSD slot, and a 2900mAh battery powering the whole package.

The pink Xperia Z5 is largely the same as the other four color options that've been available for a while now, but the new pink hue helps to get Sony's flagship some attention as we head into 2016.
