Verizon isn’t entertaining the idea of bringing back unlimited data

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 12:43 PM PST

Deals, promotions and limited-time offers are pretty common, even from wireless carriers, but Verizon doesn't have any plans to match all of them whenever a new one crops up, even when an offer like unlimited data from its biggest rival pops up on the scene.

In an interview with CNET, Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo confirmed that the Big Red carrier doesn't have any plans to bring back unlimited data in the foreseeable future. While Verizon is aware that AT&T has its own limited-time promotion to offer the almost extinct feature, it's just not having any of it.

"At this point, we are not going to entertain unlimited."

Recently, AT&T launched a promotion that sees U-verse and DirecTV subscribers have access to a special plan under AT&T's umbrella with unlimited data. The plan doesn't extend to any customers already using AT&T that aren't U-verse or DirecTV subscribers, though, so the pool of potential candidates is already limited.

Verizon doesn't want to react to a limited-time promotion, it seems, and indeed confirmed that it won't launch its own promotions and deals just because another carrier launches one.

Do you miss unlimited data?

Casting audio, video, pictures, and more from your smartphone or tablet to the TV is one of the easiest ways to get content from the little screen to the big screen, but it requires an app that supports the feature in the first place. For example, try using Adobe Reader or Google Docs to cast a PDF to the TV. You're out of luck.

Thankfully, enterprising developers like Stefan Pledl—the creator of LocalCast—have been able to whip up some really nice looking solutions that allow users to cast almost any consumable content to the big screen.

Mimicker Alarm from Microsoft Garage is a playful way to wake up

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 08:43 AM PST

Playful and fun-loving aren't the terms that I would typically associate with Microsoft, but the Mimicker Alarm app comes from Microsoft Garage — they produce projects in small teams distributed throughout Microsoft, like Google Labs does inside of Google — which is perhaps where they keep all the zanier folk.

So what exactly is the Mimicker Alarm app? You will no doubt be shocked to hear that it is an app designed to wake you up in the morning. Setting up the alarm looks very much like any other alarm app, and it adheres well to Material Design principles for those that value that kind of thing. Where it departs from the run of the mill alarm app is when that alarm goes off. You can snooze for five minutes, but as soon as you dismiss the alarm you are given 30 seconds to complete a challenge.

In order to make sure that you not only wake up, but actually stay awake, the Mimicker Alarm app forces you to play a game with it in order to shut it off. "Game" is perhaps a strong term for what the app asks you to do; tasks can vary from making a specific expression at your camera, taking a picture of something that matches a specific color or repeating back a tongue twister. The point is that they require you to focus on a task and likely long enough that you will be forced out of your restful state and be ready to face the day.

The game relies on Microsoft's Project Oxford, which you may have seen previously powering things like How-Old.net, which attempted to identify the users age from a photo, or the TwinsOrNot.net site that logically enough tried to compare two photos and identify whether they are of twins (or the same person).

The main intent of this app, as with previous projects leveraging Project Oxford, is to show off the capabilities of the APIs. It is entirely open source, with the code available on GitHub. This is a useful and clever app that you can download for free if you are looking to change up your morning wake up routine.

You know, stuff like Quadropus Rampage and Towelfight 2: Monocle of Destiny. Or Flop Rocket. How can you not like something called Flop Rocket? (Disclaimer: I've never played Flop Rocket.)

Anyway, today, the company's newest game, Crashlands, is crash landing onto Android. It's also available on Steam and iOS, if you're into that kind of thing.

HTC One M10 rumors reignite with metal-clad body, March unveiling, multiple chip configurations

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 04:43 AM PST

It's been a while since we've heard anything about the upcoming HTC One M10, but we now have new rumors from two different sources which give us new insight into the phone's internal and external hardware, along with HTC's launch plan for the phone. As with all rumors, please take the following details with a pinch or two of salt.

Due to the lack of rumors floating around, many have begun to speculate that HTC had pulled the plug of the One M10. Fortunately, that's not the case. The reason the rumor mill has been silent is because HTC is still working out the final design of the phone's design and has pushed the handset's unveiling back to March with an April retail launch. HTC will host a dedicated launch event for the phone, similar the HTC One M7 and One M8 events in 2013 and 2014. While the One M9 was unveiled at Mobile World Congress last year, the device was overshadowed by the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and dozens of other devices which launched that week.

The new rumors don't give us much insight into what the HTC One M10 will look like besides confirming that the phone will be metal-clad with a circular camera lens on the back and a fingerprint scanner and a IP78 waterproof and dustproof rating. On the inside, the phone will features a 3,000 mAh battery and a 23 megapixel camera. The European and North American version of the phone will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, but HTC is apparently prepping a Chinese and South-East Asian variant which will be powered by an unnamed MediaTek processor.

There's no guarantee that the HTC One M10 will help HTC's flailing smartphone business, but the fact that the phone's launch has not been scrapped is great news for the Android ecosystem.

Geekbench Benchmark Results Reveal Specs For International Galaxy S7

Samsung's (non North American) Galaxy S7 will be the company's first phone to use their own Exynos 8890 SoC, and a Geekbench benchmark result reveals just how good it is. With a single core score of 1873 and a multi core score of 5946, it destroys the Snapdragon 820 in terms of the multi core score (5369). The benchmark results also confirm the use of 4GB of RAM and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Other specs include a 5.1-inch QHD AMOLED display, 12MP rear/5MP front camera with LED flash and a microSD card slot.

PenGate No More, Samsung Has Fixed The Note 5

Posted: 20 Jan 2016 09:59 PM PST

S-Pen Warning

The Galaxy Note series really helped in creating the phablet category and the 2015 iteration of the Note, the Note 5, is one of the best devices to date.  Despite everything this phone did well, it did have one pretty major design flaw.  If you inserted the S-Pen backwards, you could break a small mechanism in the device.  Samsung's initial solution was to place the above warning on all devices being shipped out.  While the warning helps, it's not really a solution.

Fast forward to today and it seems that Samsung has quietly rolled out a proper solution.  Below you'll see a photo of the Note 5's motherboard.  The one on the left was taken from a newer device while the one on the right comes from an older device.  You'll notice a small whitish-grey tab that protects the small black mechanism on the left motherboard while the black mechanism is completely exposed on the motherboard on the right.  Apparently, this small white tab keeps the mechanism from breaking, even if the S-Pen is inserted backwards.

While I applaud Samsung for coming up with this solution, it seems like something so simple should have been picked up before the device even launched.

ZTE Axon Pro Is Now Available In Canada

Posted: 20 Jan 2016 09:59 PM PST

ZTE Axon Pro

Yet another Android handset is now available in Canada as Newegg is now offering the ZTE Axon Pro on their only store.  Here's a rundown of the ZTE Axon Pro:

  • 5.5″ QHD Display
  • Snapdragon 810 Processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 64GB of Storage
  • 13MP Camera + 2MP Secondary Camera
  • 8MP Front Facing Camera
  • 3000 mAh Battery
  • Android 5.1.1

Although the device looks a lot like the ZTE Axon that was released on Fido late last year, the Axon Pro is upgraded in basically every area.  It's definitely a beast on the spec sheet, even as we enter into 2016.  It would have been really nice to see the latest version of Android running on this powerhouse already but hopefully that comes out sooner rather than later.

In terms of pricing, the ZTE Axon Pro comes in at $649.99.  While that's definitely on the pricier end, it's not too bad considering the specs this packs.  You can pick it up in either Gold or Chromium Silver.
