T-Mobile allegedly hosting buy one, get one half off sale tomorrow

Posted: 26 Jan 2016 02:04 PM PST

T-Mobile is kicking off the new year with an alleged buy one, get one half off sale for a bunch of eligible smartphones. This sale will start tomorrow, January 27 according to the tip provided to TmoNews.

tmobilebogopromoprices

When you buy an eligible device, you can get the same price or cheaper device for 50% off, which is quite a bit considering the high price of high-end smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, LG G4, LG V10, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 6s Plus are all eligible.

tmobilebogopromoinfo

The offer can be redeemed with installation plans or paying the full price of the smartphone by new and existing customers. You can't mix manufacturers, so you'll have to get two of the same brand phone, though you can mix models. Both devices need to have active lines. And the cheaper device will be the one discounted, which is always the case.

Though it's unconfirmed so far, hopefully this is the case. You can get some sweet savings on new phones, right before all the new smartphones are announced in February.

Xiaomi will launch the Mi 5 on February 24

Posted: 26 Jan 2016 02:04 PM PST

Even though it hasn't done much venturing onto American soil yet, Xiaomi is quickly becoming one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers. The company has garnered much attention for creating high-end devices and selling them for comparatively low prices. If you're a fan of the company, you have a new smartphone to look forward to.

Xiaomi's own Hugo Barra (formerly VP of Android at Google) has announced via Twitter that Xiaomi will be launching its flagship Mi 5 smartphone on February 24. Barra points out that the Mi 5 will be Xiaomi's first product launch in 2016 and says that the Mi 5 will be "everything you imagined, and more."

Leaks on the Mi 5 have been fairly minimal, but we've heard rumors of a 5.2-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a metal body. It's also unclear what availability of the Mi 5 will look like. Over the past few years, Xiaomi has kept its devices in China and some surrounding countries, only recently expanding into India. But Xiaomi has stated that it has plans to move internationally, so it is possible that the Mi 5 could be Xiaomi's first phone to be sold globally.

We'll keep you posted.

When Google thinks it knows something you might be interested in, like a middle schooler at lunch time, it has to get this information off its chest. Usually this comes in the form of a Google Now notification.

These are marked by blue icons containing a symbol that indicate what type of information you're about to read, such as a cloud for weather or a soccer ball for sports. Now these images have badges with Google's logo.

LG planning two flagships for 2016

Posted: 26 Jan 2016 01:35 PM PST

LG has announced its financial results for both the fourth quarter of 2015 and the full year. In it, the company discusses all the expected stuff for each division, including the divisions for TVs and appliances. But of course, our focus is on the mobile communications division.

It looks like sales in Q4 2015 are unchanged from Q4 2014, but they're an improvement over Q3 2015. North American sales are improved as well, which aided in the improved quarter sales. LG shipped 59.7 million handsets last year.

In an effort to boost sales, LG revealed its mobile plans for 2016. They includes two flagships along with a value chain of devices. The budget devices are expected, but the second flagship (other than the LG G5) is a mystery. A successor to the LG V10 could be in the works.

It's good to see LG sales going up, we don't want to see more Android competitors drop out of the game.

Deal: Matte Gold Nexus 6P is $50 off at Best Buy, both 32GB and 64GB available

Posted: 26 Jan 2016 09:42 AM PST

Gold is definitely the color du jour for tech gadgets, and Huawei got in on the action with a new Matte Gold edition of the Nexus 6P at CES this year.

Today Best Buy is offering the first discount we have seen on the newest and regally colored Nexus 6P with $50 off the 32GB and 64GB models, bringing them down to $449 and $499, respectively.

The Nexus 5X is seeing its price slashed repeatedly, including a new low price we posted yesterday, but that hasn't been the case for its big brother, so $50 is a notable discount on the Nexus 6P. The 6P is a fantastic piece of hardware, and while I'm not going to be trading in for the gold model, I can definitely see the appeal.

Anyone planning to pick up a golden Nexus 6P?

Inbox by Gmail getting quick answer cards to speed things up

Posted: 26 Jan 2016 09:42 AM PST

Google does love cards, and its showing off that adoration with brand new "quick answer cards" within its Inbox by Gmail email app.

The latest update, which Google has just announced, is primarily focused on speeding things up when it comes to searching for content within the email app. With the quick answer cards, you'll be able to search for a specific piece of content — like an address or an online order — and have the most relevant results show up in a card that pops up at the top of the search results. When you get that card, more often than not you'll be able to tap on a link to gain more information, like tracking information for that online order you're keeping an eye on.

Inbox by Gmail QAC

On top of that, Inbox now has a "Top results" section within search, which will show you emails by relevance. Google's hoping you won't have to dig too far into your emails anymore thanks in part to the quick action cards, but if you do, these results should help out.

Inbox streamline search

Inbox by Gmail recently added trip sharing in a previous update, so it's good to see Google keeping up with new features for its other email app.

HTC One M10 could look like HTC’s One A9, heading to AT&T

Posted: 26 Jan 2016 05:42 AM PST

The latest news on the upcoming HTC One M10 (aka the HTC Perfume) is that the phone is heading to AT&T and that it might share a few design elements with the HTC One A9. Neither detail should come as a surprise. Since the HTC One (M7)'s release, all major US service providers have carried HTC's flagship smartphone. While HTC has received a lot of criticism regarding the HTC One A9′s design, HTC has been adamant that we would see similarly designed phones in the future.

Based on previous rumors, we are expecting the HTC One M10 to features metal-clap body, a circular camera lens on the back and a fingerprint sensor on the front. Other than that, we have no clue what the phone will look like. Hopefully that will change in the coming weeks.

HTC Hot Deals will save you up to 30% off HTC devices today

Posted: 26 Jan 2016 12:57 AM PST

HTC Hot Deals have been of varying quality, and there have been steeper discounts than today's offering, but in terms of sheer options this is easily one of the best.

The savings scales up with your purchase:

  • 15% off an order of $150 or more
  • 20% off an order of $500 or more
  • 30% off an order of $650 or more

There are only a few limitations on the deal. It can't be applied to the new UA HealthBox, the discount tops out on purchases up to $1,999 and finally the discount can only be applied to items that are in stock so you are going to want to move early if you have something in particular you are after.

The deals do get rounded up, so a purchase of $499.99 qualifies for the $500 tier. Now I wouldn't recommend going for the HTC One M9, which at $649.99 comes down to $454.30, but that is still pricier than you'll find it on Amazon.

The One A9 on the other hand goes from $499.99 down to $399.99, which is a bit cheaper than you'll find it elsewhere.

If you have been considering picking up any HTC gear hit the source link below to check it out now. This deal is for those in the US (or with a valid shipping address in the US) only and ends at 11:59 PM Pacific time on Tuesday, January 26th.

Amazon looking for tighter integration with Android smartphone OEMs

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 07:42 PM PST

Amazon's initial foray into the smartphone market went up in a fiery blaze with a $170 million writedown for the Fire Phone. While the hardware was better than most gave it credit for, and features like Firefly that identified a variety of media or physical objects and directed you to purchase them on Amazon were interesting, the overall package simply couldn't hold up to mid-range offerings with Google software.

The price certainly didn't help the Fire Phone, either. It started at an insane $650 and could not remotely compete with high-end offerings from Samsung, LG or HTC at the time. It fairly quickly fell to $449, but even this was a steep ask compared to, say, the Moto X, and the price freefall continued on until we eventually saw the Fire Phone at $130. It didn't move that well even at that price, despite offering a year of Amazon Prime ($99 value).

Well, Amazon has learned its lesson and seemingly won't be returning to the market with a Fire Phone 2, but they aren't giving up on mobile completely. If a report from The Information is correct, Amazon is trying to convince some smartphone OEMs to more tightly integrate Amazon software beyond the simple inclusion of some Amazon apps that we see today.

While I can see why Amazon would vastly prefer this tact to risking its neck on another Fire Phone, it seems like a project that is ultimately doomed to failure given that any significant Android manufacturer will pass, as such a device would almost assuredly violate the agreement with Google necessary to ship devices with Google services. I don't question that Amazon will be able to find some smartphone OEM that will do this, but for a company the size of Amazon, anything less than 1 of the top 10 Android OEMs (heck, probably the top 5) is going to be meaningless market share.

With that said, it is hard to bet against Amazon completely, so perhaps they have figured something out that we are missing.

What would you need to see out of a device with Amazon services tightly integrated to make you consider it?

Galaxy S7 To Launch March 11?

While the US date may not apply to us, there's a good chance that it will.  Last year, Samsung did a global launch for the Galaxy S6 with numerous countries all releasing the device on April 10.  There's no reason to think that Samsung wouldn't do the same thing this year as the strategy has many benefits.
