Nextbit Robin begins shipping to early Kickstarter backers on February 16

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 12:43 PM PST

Back in September of last year, Nextbit officially introduced the Robin, an Android-powered smartphone that is "cloud-first." With an eye-catching design and features that focus on storing and pulling things from the cloud, it earned plenty of attention. And after a successful stint on Kickster, it is about to start shipping. At least for the first 1,000 Kickstarter backers, anyway.

As revealed by the company's chief designer, Scott Croyle, the Robin will begin shipping to the first 1,000 Kickstarter backers beginning February 16. However, while that's certainly good news for those lucky 1,000, it is only of the GSM model to start. For anyone that backed a CDMA model, the wait continues.

There's no word on when other backers will start to see their device shipped or when the CDMA models will get their first shipments.

Did you back the Robin project?

Withings Go fitness tracker offers 8 months battery life and an E ink display for $69

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 11:15 AM PST

Withings continues to charge hard at the wearable market without going head to head with the true smartwatch crowd.

The Withings Go is the latest offering and it takes a decidedly more dressed down approach than the Activité line, but at least in my opinion a more compelling look than the Pulse 02.

That 8 months of battery life is probably going to be the highlight feature of the Go for those that can't stomach the idea of another gadget to charge. The E Ink screen and of course minimal functionality are responsible for that extended battery life. The Go is simply there to track your sleep and fitness activity and provide the time when called upon to do so.

The Go comes with two modules in the box; the first is a clip to attach to your pants, shirt, sports bra or perhaps your shoelaces and the second is a rubber watch style band. The modules come in either black, yellow, red, blue or green.

The Go is also able to be worn while swimming, something most of the more advanced fitness trackers don't recommend, and will successfully differentiate between activities like swimming, running or walking.

While you can view your daily activity progress on the E Ink display, there is far more data to be had when viewing the Health Mate app.

The Withings Go certainly isn't going to be for everyone given the stripped down functionality versus a smartwatch, but for those that only really care about fitness tracking and want to just put something on and forget about it the $69 Withings Go will be a compelling package when it launches later this year.

Paradoxically, Worms 2: Armageddon and Worms 3 came after that Worms 4 (Mayhem), and now we're back to 4 again, this time with no subtitle.

Honor 5X up for pre-order on Amazon and Newegg

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 09:11 AM PST

If your interest was piqued by the aggressively priced mid-range competitor the Honor 5X yesterday, then you will be glad to hear that you can already place your pre-order on either Amazon or Newegg. Both sites have all three colors for $199 with an expected ship date of January 31st.

While it is unquestionably a mid-range device, the Honor 5X does offer a number of features that to date have been reserved for higher end devices. Two of the big highlights are the all-metal construction as well as the fingerprint scanner on the back. A 5.5-inch screen isn't unheard of in this range and it is 1080p rather than the higher resolutions we've been seeing lately, but many people are perfectly happy with that resolution.

As for the rest of the internals the camera is a respectable f/2.4 13MP and a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 with 2GB of RAM should be plenty to keep things running smoothly on that 1080p screen.

The Honor 5X is launching with Android 5.1, but a rapid update to Marshmallow is in the works.

More fun in the living room with Android TV and with Google Cast speakers

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 08:08 AM PST

Android TV and Google Cast for audio devices were introduced to give you more freedom and control over your entertainment. Today we're bringing even more TV and speaker makers onboard for both Android TV and Google Cast.

When it comes to home entertainment, the living room is more connected than ever. Approximately 88% of consumer electronic devices shipped in 2015 were Internet-enabled.* When devices in the home are connected, it's important to have platforms that make it easy for you to stream your favorite digital music and movies.

Android TV
Android TV brings apps, games, movies, shows, music and more to the biggest screen in your home. From smart TVs to cable box operators, many devices support the Android TV experience. Now you've got even more options to find the device that's right for you. If you're looking for a new TV, you can select an Android TV from Sony, Sharp and Philips. Later this year, Android TV will be available from Arcelik, Vestel, RCA, Hisense, TCL and Bang & Olufsen. And, for our users in Indonesia, Linknet now has an Android TV offering.

Google Cast for speakers
Google Cast, the same technology built into Chromecast, is now embedded directly into speakers, sound bars, and A/V receivers so you can cast music from your favorite app on your phone or any music streaming website on Chrome. Throughout 2016, you'll be able to enjoy Google Cast speakers from B&O Play, Harman Kardon, Onkyo, Philips, Pioneer, and Raumfeld. Sony and LG, who were among the first to include Google Cast in their speakers, are also refreshing their speaker lineups. Cast-enabled software and hardware from Frontier Silicon and StreamUnlimited will make it easier for more audio companies to join the Google Cast family.

Recently, we announced that multi-room synchronization is available on Chromecast Audio. Multi-room sync lets you group speakers connected to Chromecast Audio devices together so you can listen to the same song throughout the house. In 2016, multi-room sync functionality will come to Google Cast speakers, allowing you to mix and match Cast-enabled speakers from your favorite brands with speakers connected to Chromecast Audio.

Check back for more hardware and content news throughout the year.

HTC Vive Pre gets unboxed by Owlchemy Labs

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 07:11 AM PST

HTC and Valve won't be sending you the HTC Vive Pre any time soon, but you can get a feel for unboxing experience of the developer kit thanks to a new video that just went up on Owlchemy Labs' YouTube channel. We can guarantee that the packaging of the consumer version of the HTC Vive will look a lot nicer than the drab brown boxes that the Vive Pre is shipped in, but it's still nice to hear and see the excitement from the developers when they see the redesigned headset and controllers for the first time.

More than 7,000 HTC Vive Pre kits are being shipped to developers across the globe. Pre-orders for the HTC Vive will open next months, but HTC and Valve are not planning to ship the consumer version of the Vive until April. HTC is still not willing to talk about the Vive's price, but that information will likely be revealed during Mobile World Congress at the end of February.

'Human' Steps Into The Play Store, Dragging Its All-Day Activity Tracking Features Behind

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 07:07 AM PST

human-android

Human's activity and fitness tracker has been available on iOS since 2013, but it has just decided to get its running shoes on and ride to the Android side. The app takes a passive approach to activity tracking, working in the background on your phone to figure out everything (walks, runs, bike rides) you've done throughout the day. If this sounds familiar, it's because it's very similar to Google Fit or to the previous "celebrity" in the category, Moves.

What you may have missed from CES Press Day

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 06:41 AM PST

If you hadn't noticed, yesterday was quite crazy. There were dozens of new Android-related product announcements that featured new smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, wearables, TVs and other accessories. Since it's nearly impossible to keep up with all the news, we've pulled the most important announcements into this post to showcase the highlights of the day. Whether you read through the highlights or dig into every story, be sure you're done before the next wave on CES news rolls in today.

Smartphones and Tablets

huawei-mate-81

While there were quite a few smartphones and tablets announced yesterday, the devices from Huawei definitely stood out. The Huawei Mate 8 is the company's new flagship smartphone for international markets, featuring a 6-inch 1080p display, 2.3GHz Kirin 950 octa-core processor, 3/4GB of RAM, 32/64GB of internal storage, 16-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front cameras, a fingerprint scanner, Android 6.0 and a massive 4000mAh battery. The Mate 8 is will sell for a starting price of €599.

honor-5x-10

While it wasn't the first Huawei phone to be unveiled, the Honor 5X is certainly the most exciting since it sports an aluminum chassis, fingerprint scanner, 5.5-inch display, Snapdragon 615 processor and 13-megapixel main camera. And it can be pre-ordered now from Amazon for only $199! Competing with the Honor 5X is the Huawei GX8, which sports nearly all the same specs while carrying a $349 price tag.

huawei-mediapad-m2-10

Hauwei also introduced the MediaPad M2 10.0 (an overpriced mid-range Android tablet) and started offering the Nexus 6P in Matte Gold.

lenovo-VIBE-S1-Lite

If you live in Asia and are looking for nice mid-range phone, the Lenovo Vibe S1 Lite may be perfect. The phone comes with a 5-inch 1080p IPS display, MediaTek processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage and a 2700mAh battery, all wrapped up in a 8.5mm-thick body that carries a $199 sticker price.

acer-iconia-one-8

Since cheap tablets are everywhere these days, you shouldn't be surprised to see one at CES. The Acer Iconia One 8 runs on Android 5.1 with an 8-inch display, MediaTek quad-core processor, a 5MP rear camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, 1GB DDR3L RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. The good news is that Acer is only planning to charge $99 for the Iconia One 8 when it goes on sale in February.

Wearables and Smartwatches

watchjewel

Huawei has introduced two new variants of the Huawei Watch: the rose gold-plated Elegant and the Jewel, which features 68 Swarovski Zirconia crystals around the face of the smartwatch. Both watches share scratch-resistant, two-layer sapphire crystal screens and 316L cold-forged stainless steel construction. Internal specification are the same as the original Huawei Watch.

htc-ua-band-scale-heart-rate

HTC typically doesn't have a huge presence at CES, but the company decided to change that in 2016. HTC finally introduced its fitness product portfolio, bundled as the UA Health Box. The bundle includes the UA Band for tracking your sleep, steps and workouts; UA Heart Rate for precise heart rate monitoring; and the UA Scale, which keeps track of your weight and body fat. HTC and Under Armour will be selling each product individually when the Health Box go on sale in February, but you can save money by pre-ordering the UA Health Box for $400.

Fitbit_Blaze_Lineup

The Fitbit Blaze is a new $200 smart fitness watch that features a color display and basic notifications and music controls. Along with the expected step, sleep and heart rate tracking, the new FitStar feature displays guided workout animations on the Blaze's screen.

WSD-F10-1

Casio is a new player in the Android Wear arena, but the Casio WSD-F10 should be an appealing option for those looking for a rugged smartwatch. The device can resist being submerged in 50 meters of water, is MIL-STD-810 "military standard" certified and incorporates a dual layer display that incorporates a color TFT LCD and monochrome LCD, which allows the smartwatch to last more than a single day with regular use or more than one month when switched over to Timepiece Mode.

garmin-varia-vision

The Garmin Varia Vision is the biker's alternative to Google Glass. Selling for $400, the Varia Vision fits onto either side of an existing pair of sunglasses and offers a heads-up display that shows ride data cyclists might find useful. That includes distance traveled, time, navigation prompts and performance alerts, in addition to call and message notifications from your smartphone.

misfit-ray-4

Your fitness tracker no longer needs to be an eye sore thanks to the new Misfit Ray. The cylindrical aluminum body of the Ray looks like a fashion accessory, but it can keep track of your fitness and sleep and can last up to six months before the battery needs to be replaced.

Other devices

sony-android-tv-2016-ces

CES announcements wouldn't be complete without a few Android TVs. Sony's  XBR-X930D, XBR-X940D and XBR-X850D 4K TVs offer quite a few improvements over last year's models terms of in contrast, color accuracy and clarity, and they give users the ability to enjoy media or gaming through Android TV.

Jaybird-Freedom-earbuds

On the surface, the new Jaybird Freedom and Jaybird X3 may seem like ordinary Bluetooth headphones, but both work with the company's new MySound app, which gives users the ability to create completely customized sound profiles for their wireless earbuds that actually stay with the hardware.

Sony’s 4K Android TV lineup gets three new models

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 03:05 AM PST

As we expected, Sony unveiled three new 4K Android TV models at CES – the XBR-X930D, XBR-X940D and the XBR-X850D. All three models sport Sony's updated 4K X1 Processor which allows for improved color accuracy, clarity and contrast. Compared to last year's models, Sony's 2016 lineup also comes with improved HDR (high dynamic range) support, allowing the TVs to display a more vivid picture.

The top of the line Sony X930D is also equipped with Sony's new Slim Backlight Drive technology which intelligently delivery brightness to the TV's image where needed, without blowing out darker areas and even reducing power consumption.

Sony's simple "Content Bar" smart TV interface is augmented by Android TV which gives users access to digital content from thousands of Google Play apps and even turns the TV into an Android gaming system when paired with a Bluetooth Controller.

Sony will only be selling the XBR-X940D at 75-inches, but the BR-X930D will be available in 55 and 65-inches while the XBR-X850D model will be available in 55, 65, 75, and 85-inches. All three models will be available in early 2016, but Sony has not shared any details regarding pricing. Based on what Sony's current 4K Android TV's are selling phone, we don't expect the new lineup to be cheap.

Sony Electronics Unveils New 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range) TV Line

Outstanding Picture Clarity in an Ultra Slim Profile

PR Newswire

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — (CES, Booth #14200) — Today, Sony Electronics unveiled its newest lineup of 4K Ultra HD televisions, the XBR-X930D/XBR-X940D and the XBR-X850D series, built to support the highest standard in picture quality with HDR (High Dynamic Range) compatibility and unique backlighting technologies in an ultra-thin design.

HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors. With HDR compatible televisions, and Sony's unique X-tended Dynamic Range™ PRO and TRILUMINOS™ Display technologies, viewers will enjoy higher brightness, higher contrast and more vibrant colors, resulting in more depth and detail than ever before.

"Sony knows HDR from the lens to the living room – we were among the first to use cameras that film in 4K and HDR and have been on the forefront of offering consumers technology that can bring the stunning experience of 4K and HDR into their homes," said Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics. "Our new lineup of 4K HDR televisions is proof of our continuing efforts to bring the latest and greatest technologies to market that will provide the best home entertainment experience."

HDR content is becoming increasingly available on video services, with Amazon becoming the first video provider to offer titles in HDR. Amazon Original Series include the most-streamed Amazon original show ever: The Man in the High Castle and the 2016 Golden Globe nominated series Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle, as well as movies including After Earth, Fury, Salt, Elysium and more. Netflix was the first to roll out 4K content to the mainstream market and has made a commitment to providing HDR content to its subscribers. Additionally, at its press conference, Sony unveiled ULTRA, a new app from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to be launched this year in the US. With ULTRA, consumers can purchase and stream 4K HDR movies and TV shows – the best new and classic titles from the 4K digital library of Sony Pictures – directly on their Sony 4K HDR TV.1

Starting in 2016, Sony 4K televisions that are capable of fully taking advantage of HDR content, from the XBR-X850D series and up, will be branded with a new "4K HDR Ultra HD" logo. This logo will be used across Sony's 4K HDR Ultra HD compatible products from content production, to display devices and services. Logoed televisions meet the Consumer Technology Association's (CTA) HDR definition and support compelling next-generation visual experiences.

Outstanding Picture Clarity

The new XBR-X930D models feature Sony's new Slim Backlight Drive with precision grid array backlighting. The Slim Backlight Drive, combined with Sony's enhanced backlight control X-tended Dynamic Range PRO, boosts and dims the backlight to create deeper blacks and brighter peak highlights. This technology manages the light source more accurately in each specific zone while still maintaining a slim profile.

All of these premium 4K HDR televisions utilize Sony's 4K Processor X1 to enhance color, contrast and clarity, improving the quality of 4K images. This is combined with a TRILUMINOS Display to reproduce a wider color range with accurate color details at any brightness level. Further enhancing the picture quality, these televisions are also equipped with 4K X-Reality PRO to bring stunning picture detail using a reality creation database for everything from TV broadcasting to Internet video.

Usability and Design

To support an enhanced viewing experience that goes beyond the screen, the XBR-X930D and XBR-X940D Sony 4K HDR Ultra HD models will have an ultra-thin design that creates an expansive, borderless picture and mounts flush to a wall. When hung against a wall, the television is so close, and the bezel is so thin, that it can appear to be flush with the wall. When the television is set on a TV stand or a cabinet its clean cable management keeps wires out of view and looks equally elegant when viewed from the back or front.

These new televisions support Google's Android TV™ operating system, making it even easier to watch broadcast and cable TV, stream video, download entertainment, or use as a gaming device. Android TV brings the world's most popular mobile platform to Sony's TVs, providing a tailored and intuitive entertainment experience. TV lovers can watch hit shows and timeless movies from Google Play™, Amazon Video, YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, PBS and PBS KIDS. Users can also access a huge selection of games and additional apps from the Google Play store right on the TV. Additional popular apps available via Android TV include HBO NOW, EPIX, Starz Play, iHeartRadio, Fusion, PlutoTV and Vevo.

In addition, Android TV's voice-enabled searching feature has been enhanced to support natural language voice actions and longer, more complex sentences. And with Google Cast™2, users can cast their favorite entertainment apps such as HBO GO from their Android or iOS device, Mac or Windows computer or Chromebook to the TV.

Beyond streaming content, Sony's Android TV platform allows Home Automation control directly from the TV's UI using a Logitech Harmony Hub. More than 270,000 home entertainment products and IoT (internet of things) devices, such as lights, shades and thermostats can be controlled and automated at the push of a button on the TV's remote.

Casio WSD-F10 Android Wear smartwatch features a dual-layer TFT, monochrome display

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 02:12 AM PST

Over the past 18 months or so, we've seen a handful of "active" Android Wear smartwatches, but nothing like the new WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch from Casio. Available in gree, orange, black or red, the Casio WSD-F10 can resist being submerged in 50 meters of water and also comes with a MIL-STD-810 "military standard" certified build. But that's not all that makes Casio's first Android Wear device unique.

The WSD-F10 sports a 1.32-inch (320×300 pixels) dual layer display which incorporates a Color TFT LCD and monochrome LCD which allows the smartwatch to last more than a single day with regular use or more than when switched over to Timepiece Mode. The watch also comes with pressure, accelerometer, gyrometer and compass sensors along with Bluetooth 4.1 and 802.11 b/g/n Wifi connectivity. The device also comes with a microphone, magnetic charging port and dedicated Power, Tools and App buttons so that you can easily interact with the device while wearing gloves. While Casio has packed a lot features into the watch, it only weighs 93 grams and measures 61.7mm x 56.4mm × 15.7mm.

Casio will begin selling the WSD-F10 in April for $500. Yes, that's a bit more expensive than many of the Android Wear smartwatches that are currently on the market, but the WSD-F10 will be the only true "rugged" Android Wear option for those who can't leave their technology behind while enjoying the outdoors.

Video: hands-on with the Huawei MediaPad M2

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 12:42 AM PST

After the Huawei MediaPad M2 was announced yesterday at CES, we had the opportunity to get some hands-on time with the new tablet. The 7.3mm body of the tablet is wrapped in aluminum around the back and sides and a single pane of glass on the front. The device has a premium build, but it can be a bit slippery if you hold it with just one hand. The highlights of the tablet are its four Harman/Kardon speakers and the included M Pen active stylus which is bundled with the $419 version of the tablet.

The MediaPad M2 10 comes in two configurations, one in silver with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, and one with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Both tablets will come with the same 10-inch 1920×1200 display, 2GHz Kirin 930 Octa-core processor, aluminum alloy body, 13 and 5-megapixel cameras, and Android 5.1.

Twitter’s 140-character limit may jump to 10,000 in March

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 11:12 PM PST

According to multiple reports, Twitter is planning to fundamentally change its social networking service in March by increasing its arbitrary 140 character limit to 10,000. In an effort to retain the same look and feel within Twitter, users would need to click to expand Tweets that are longer than 140 characters.

After the initial news hit the web, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Tweeted a screenshot with a 1,317 character message which seems to confirm the reports.

"We've spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it. Instead, what if that text… was actually text? Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted. That's more utility and power."

Expanding Twitter's character limit from 140 to 10,000 would dramatically change the way Twitter is used and would likely alienate a good portion of Twitter's user base. That being said, the change would also make the service a lot more appealing for those how enjoy the freedom offered by Facebook and Google+. Twitter has been under a lot of pressure to find new ways to grow its user base and increase revenues.

Are you a Twitter user? Would increasing Twitter's character limit from 140 to 10,000 change the way you use it?

Samsung updates Gear S2 Classic with new Platinum and 18K Rose Gold options

GearS2_Classic_Platinum_Rosegold_Main

Samsung's announcements at CES today mostly centred around home entertainment, however they did unveil two new models of the Gear S2 Classic to accompany the standard black watch.

These two new colour options aren't anything wild or out there for the 'Classic' variant of the Gear S2, intended for those after a more traditional timepiece. New Platinum silver and 18 carat Rose Gold casings will be available with genuine black and ivory white leather watch straps respectively.

Under the hood, these new Gear S2 Classic models are exactly the same as the black model currently available in Australia at RRP $599. Samsung Australia has confirmed both new options will arrive in Australia at some point, but exact dates and pricing ...

Android Distribution Numbers Updated For January, Marshmallow Slowly Rises To 0.7%

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 08:58 PM PST

android_dist_jan2016

We're now well into the new year and Google has updated their Android distribution numbers accordingly. These numbers are updated by Google at roughly the start of every month for developers to look at so they can generalize what version of Android their potential install base is running and act upon it.

The newest Android version, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, only saw a 0.2% increase from December 2015 to sit at 0.7%, while Lollipop as a whole increased by 3.1%. KitKat and Jelly bean also decrease by 0.5% and 2.2% respectively. ICS and Gingerbread also decreased while Froyo for almost a year manages to stay constant at 0.2%

Comparing the adoption rate to iOS is indeed quite embarrasing but it's worth mentioning that at this time last year, Lollipop hadn't even made it to the chart so Marshmallow's adoption rate should be considered as a huge improvement.
