Sony's Xperia Weather App Is Out Of Beta And Live In The Play Store

Posted: 12 Feb 2016 03:27 PM PST

unnamedThose of you with a Sony device are in for a treat today. Well, maybe not a treat, but something kind of fun that you can install on your phone. Is that still a treat? I don't know. I guess just calling it a weather app is more accurate. Am I rambling? At any rate, the Xperia Weather app has left beta and is live in the Play Store.

You've probably seen a lot of weather apps in your time, so you can probably evaluate this app pretty quickly from the screenshots.

You can head here to check out the full resolution shot plus a crop showing off the detail. While a single photo isn't representative of a device's camera quality, this detail does look really good. The resolution also confirms a 16MP sensor. The Xiaomi Mi 5 will be announced on February 24, so we'll get to see for ourselves soon enough!

Runkeeper Becomes Next Mobile Fitness App To Get Acquired By An Athletics Company (This Time It's ASICS)

Runkeeper-ASICS

A number of fitness-oriented apps popped up over the past few years and attracted users with ways to track their workouts. Whether it's counting calories or mapping out runs, people have embraced the concept by the millions.

Athletic companies have picked up on this. Last year we watched Under Armour purchase MyFitnessPal and Endomondo. Months later, Adidas scooped up Runtastic. Now ASICS is buying FitnessKeeper, the company behind Runkeeper, for an as of yet undisclosed amount.

Picasa officially shutting down on May 1

Posted: 12 Feb 2016 12:36 PM PST

Google's Picasa photo service will soon be no more, as the company has decided to focus on Google Photos instead of working on both. The service will officially be shut down on May 1, while support for the desktop app will end March 15.

Thankfully, your data won't be lost. Google is making a way for people to continue accessing old data, including tags and comments, for those who don't want to use Google Photos. Users won't be able to add or edit anything, but giving them access to old data is a great move by Google.

If you want to move from Picasa to Google Photos, all of your photos and videos will already be there. There's no need to move everything over. Google Photos is a pretty nice service, so at least give it a shot.

How many of you still use Picasa?

T-Mobile HTC One M9 has a date with Marshmallow next week

Posted: 12 Feb 2016 12:36 PM PST

While the Marshmallow update for the AT&T One M9 remains in a holding pattern due to some complications, the T-Mobile One M9 is full speed ahead, with its Marshmallow OTA starting this coming Tuesday, February 16th. This is all according to the ever reliable (but not infallible), Mo Versi of HTC.

Not surprisingly, despite AT&T's issues, it still looks like they will manage to edge out Verizon on the One M9 update, with the latter still undergoing testing.

HTC is keeping things competitive as far as speed of updates, and thanks in no small part to Mo Versi, they offer a level of transparency that many manufacturers lack. Of course, we'll see HTC hardware get a tremendous boost in software update speed this year if the Nexus rumors actually come to pass. For now, T-Mobile One M9 owners should get ready to join in the Android 6.0 fun this Tuesday.

Verizon updating Motorola Droid Turbo 2 to Marshmallow

Posted: 12 Feb 2016 12:35 PM PST

Verizon Droid Turbo 2 users, your time has come, because Verizon has finally decided to start rolling out the upgrade to Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the Turbo 2. Better late than never, but still later than Motorola's own update for the Moto X Pure Edition.

The update to Marshmallow might not seem so significant when you first start using it, but trust us, it's big. There are a ton of new features that subtly make the user experience a lot better. Battery life is better thanks to Doze mode, security is improved due to customizable app permissions, Do Not Disturb is more advanced than Motorola's previous version of the same feature, and Now on Tap might be useful to some. Here's Verizon's list of changes:

  • Now on Tap
  • Doze Mode
  • App Standby
  • App Permissions
  • App Links
  • Expandable Storage
  • Do Not Disturb
  • Volume Controls
  • Direct Share
  • Moto Display and Ambient Display
  • Moto Assist
  • Attentive Display

If you own the device, check for the update in Settings and hope you'll get it now! If not, you'll have to wait for the rollout to reach you. Let us know how the update goes!

Coupons are great. Who doesn't like saving money on stuff? (Or better yet, free stuff.) But we can all agree that keeping track of coupons is awful. With this in mind, Google introduced the Save To Wallet API way back in 2012. It was a pretty simple way to transfer loyalty card or coupon information directly from a webpage or email into the Wallet app. Unfortunately, Android apps didn't get this same feature until two years later (yeah, this was clearly a priority).

Duck Hunt Meets VR

Duck Hunt VR

Virtual Reality has really taken off this past year with every major manufacturer from Samsung, to Apple, to Google working on (or allegedly working on) devices and various developers working on new games and applications.  Well here's a pretty sweet game 21 year old New Jersey Institute of Technology student Joseph Delgado put together.

Now if you grew up in the NES era, you'll immediately recognize the happy little rover above.  If you have no idea what we're talking about, you missed out on a great time in gaming.  Anyway, Delgado recreated Nintendo's iconic Duck Hunt game but took it to the next level with this 360 degree virtual reality version.  Using an Oculus Rift DK2 and Razer's Hydra motion controller, Delgado got to shooting down 8-bit birds, orange gun in tow and all!

It's really an awesome achievement and gives us yet another glimpse as to what the VR world has to bring!

Exercise apps are a really good target for the Chromecast. If you're trying to follow the exact steps of a workout and you don't know the body position and movements, you don't want to check your small phone's screen and keep fiddling with its angle and trying to turn it on each time the display timeout kicks off, while also struggling to maintain a Crab Bridge. Play Music Valentine’s Day deal will save someone you love 50% off a subscription, even if it’s you

Posted: 12 Feb 2016 07:45 AM PST

Play Music pricing is competitive with the rest of the streaming music world at $9.99 a month, and for YouTube fans the added bonus of ad-free bliss with YouTube Red makes it an even more compelling offer. But regardless of whether the standard pricing is fair or not, I'm sure no one is going to get upset at the idea of saving a few dollars on it every month.

And that is precisely the deal that Google is offering up for those that are looking to give the gift of Play Music this Valentine's Day. You can save 50% off the standard $9.99 a month pricing by purchasing either a 1-month, 3-month or 6-month subscription at $4.99, $14.98 or $29.97, respectively. I'll leave it up to you as to whether Play Music is the right fit as a Valentine's gift for someone in your life, but if it is, this is a nice little savings on your generous gift.

Unlike Amazon Prime, Google isn't preventing users from giving themselves the gift of Play Music with this offer. It comes as a completely standard subscription, so you should be able to tack this on if you are an existing subscriber. And because the subscriptions don't expire, I don't see any reason why you couldn't also take this opportunity to stock up on subscriptions if you want to lock in this $4.99 price for the foreseeable future.
