Posted: 22 Mar 2016 02:37 PM PDT

In the midst of the terror attack on Belgium, all four major US carriers have come out and announced free calling and texting to Belgium. Verizon users will have free calling and texting to Belgium March 22-23, AT&T users March 22-28, T-Mobile users March 22-25, and Sprint (and Virgin and Boost) users March 22-31.

If you have family and friends in Belgium, this decision will make it easy and free to get into contact with them. Our thoughts are with those affected.

Chromecast app renamed to Google Cast, new Vizio TVs to come with Cast built in

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 01:33 PM PDT

Google Cast, the technology behind the Chromecast we all know and love, has grown into much more than just part of a single streaming device. It's now a technology used across many devices made by many manufacturers. It's a great way of streaming content from mobile devices to the big screen, and some TVs even come with it.

To make the Chromecast app more in line with its uses, it has been renamed to Google Cast. Google and Vizio have also announced the new P-Series TVs, which not only include built in 4K Google Cast functionality, but also come with a 6-inch Android tablet for a remote.

The tablet remote is an interesting idea, since it can be used to stream content to the TV via different apps. The longevity of this tablet is a potential issue, but we'll have to see how it works out. The Google Cast app will get its updated name on Android and iOS this week.

Google Photos now automatically creates albums from trips

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 01:01 PM PDT

Taking photos is fun, but organizing them can be a chore. After a trip and a bunch of photos and videos, it can be annoying to pick your favorite shots and organize them into an album.

Google Photos has been updated with automatic album creation, so after a trip or an event, the service can automatically create an album using your best photos and videos, inserting locations along the way. It makes it easier to share your memories with others, as well as have a record of these trips not mixed together with the rest of your photos.

If anything about the album is off, you can always edit it, add locations yourself, and even allow others to edit it with you. The feature is rolling out to Android, iOS, and the web app today so you'll see the feature working soon!

Where is Android’s answer to iPhone SE?

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 01:01 PM PDT

With iPhone SE, Apple has something Android doesn't. Photo: AppleDie-hard Android fans probably had little interest in Apple's keynote Monday, but believe it or not, plenty will be interested in the new iPhone SE. With high-end specifications and a 4-inch display, it's a compact smartphone for those who want the latest features without a supersized screen — and there's nothing like it on Android.

Google Photos Gets Smarter Suggested Albums, No Update Needed

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 12:41 PM PDT

nexusae0_Google-Photos-icon-logo.pngGoogle Photos already has some "smart" features that try to make your photos easier to manage, and today it's getting another one. Google is rolling out "smarter albums" to the app. From now on, when you take pictures while on a trip or attending an event, Google Photos will automatically assemble your best shots into albums for easy sharing.

Google already knows where your photos were taken, and it can use its image recognition algorithms to figure out which one are the best (maybe).

HTC 10 will be unveiled on April 12

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 10:30 AM PDT

Today's HTC 10 news is not a rumor; it comes straight from HTC. We suggest you take your calendar out and circle April 12, as that's the day that the HTC 10 will finally be announced. HTC shared the date of the announcement with members of the press via email and the public through its social media accounts. Today's announcement lists three different locations, but we're not sure which will be hosting the main event. In the past, HTC has simulcast its flagship announcement events, splitting things between London and New York. For those not attending, you will be able to tune into a live stream on HTC's website.

While April 12th isn't too far off, it will probably feel like an eternity since we already know pretty much every detail regarding the new phone.

Will you be waiting for April 12th to roll around before buying a new phone or will you be picking up the Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge or LG G5 before then?

Two giants going head to head. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of AndroidAfter unboxing and filming the review for the Samsung Galaxy S7, I realized that I had never used Android as a daily driver. I had always sided with iOS in any "fanboy" debates, and I had never given the little green robot a chance. To change this, I set myself the challenge of using Android and the

Google gives Chromecast platform a much better name

Chromecast is now Google Cast. Photo: GoogleGoogle's Chromecast platform has been given a brand new name: Google Cast. The new name makes more sense given the platform's ability to stream more than just Chrome tabs, but the Chromecast dongle lineup will retain the old moniker for now. Google To Rebrand The Chromecast App As Google Cast, Updates Google Cast Website

The Chromecast has come a long way since its inception, and it is now much more than just a way to mirror a browser tab to your TV. In fact, most of the ways you can use a Chromecast today have little or nothing to with Chrome itself, and run exclusively on Google's underlying Cast technology. Google is well aware of this drift away from Chrome, which is why it will soon be updating the Android and iOS Chromecast apps to reflect the change: later this week, the Chromecast app will change its name to Google Cast.

Rogers Promo Lets You Net A S7 For $0!

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 06:57 AM PDT

S7 & S7 Edge - 3

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are amazing phones but lets face it, the price tag is pretty steep.  Well if you're wanting to get Samsung's latest and greatest but don't want to throw down $400-$500 then you'll want to check out Rogers.

Roger currently has a promo running on the S7 and S7 Edge which allows you to grab one of these beauties at a much more reasonable price, $0 in the case of the S7!  To begin with, Rogers is offerings a $225 credit to both new and existing customers.  For existing customers, the credit will show up on the 2nd or 3rd invoice after purchase.  For new customers, you will receive $100 off in store and an additional $125 bill credit, again on the 2nd or 3rd invoice.  Next, Rogers is offering a $175 trade in credit when purchasing the S7 and S7 Edge.  While the finer print doesn't definitively say this, it appears that you can trade in ANY phone that is a smart phone!  Add that all up and the S7 is $0 and the S7 Edge is a much more reasonable $100!

Last little condition.  This promo is only available at "Rogers branded retail locations" which I assume means no authorized dealers can offer this to you.

Facebook's 7-Second Profile Videos Seem To Be Rolling Out More Widely On Android

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a 7-second videos is worth a whole several hundred thousand words — depending on the frame rate. So why would you want your Facebook profile to limit you to one photo when there's more to you, your duckface, your pets, your babies, your partner, your family, your latest food order, than any photo can hold? Why not choose a video montage of all of these things that matter most to you, or maybe a short video of you smiling or giggling or being sexy and cool, because how else will anyone know that you're most awesomest'est person on earth?

Here’s A Look At Android N’s Hidden “Freeform Window” Mode

Posted: 21 Mar 2016 09:55 PM PDT

Android_N_freeform

Android N has had a very good start as compared to Android L and M in terms of features and usability. While most of you know that Android N officially brought support for multi-window apps, Google has added a hidden feature that allows multitasking to be even easier and that is "Freeform Window" mode.

Similar to what you find on your average desktop OS, you can now open and reorganize floating apps just like how you would on desktop. You can even go as far as to resize the app and "snap" it to the left or right hand side of the screen. Ars Technica has conveniently produced a video showing everything it the mode can do in its current state.

[ youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lQPp0j9skA&rel=0 ]

For those that are running Android N, this feature can only be enabled if you have already unlocked your bootloader and have installed TWRP. Full instructions are provided in the source link below.

We're big fans of cross-device sync here at Android Police. Therefore, we're of the opinion that if you haven't yet heard of joaomgcd's latest app, you're missing out. Join is a bit like Pushbullet, in that it can do Android-to-desktop notifications, desktop SMS, and a cross-device clipboard. But it can do a lot more; for example, you can set your Android wallpaper through Chrome simply by right-clicking on an image of your choice and selecting :Set image as wallpaper."

Join has a fully-featured, ad-supported trial period of 30 days, costing $4.99 if you want to keep using it, although it's currently down to $3.99 for a limited time.

Samsung Galaxy S5 now receiving Marshmallow in South Korea

Posted: 21 Mar 2016 04:40 PM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy S5 may be two years old now, but Samsung is not ending support for the device yet. The South Korean unlocked Galaxy S5 on the LG Uplus network is now getting Marshmallow.

The update brings the latest version of Android currently available, which includes great features like Doze mode, Google Now on Tap, and plenty of other improvements both in speed and functionality. Also included is an updated version of TouchWiz.

While an update local to South Korea isn't important to most of us, it shows that Samsung is still supporting the Galaxy S5 and that the update is pretty much ready for the phone. It just needs localization and region specific changes, so we might see it in the US soon.
