Android TV Remote Control v1.1 Is Preparing To Add Gamepad Capabilities, Auto-Sleep For Supported TVs, And Volume Tuning For Voice Responses [APK Teardown]

atvremote

If you own an Android TV box or a television with it built in, there's a pretty good chance you've also taken the time to install Google's remote control app to go with it. It's not that the app is necessary, but it's a great backup in case your main remote is lost or the batteries die. All things considered, it's a pretty basic utility app; but it might not be quite so simple in the near future.

Pebble to lay off 25% of its staff this week

Posted: 23 Mar 2016 02:20 PM PDT

The wearable industry is in an odd phase of life. Multiple manufacturers have released a myriad of wearables upon a market that was supposedly demanding them. The problem now is that sales have been significantly lower than expected, causing manufacturers to struggle and leading investors to become wary. While large companies like Apple and Samsung can absorb the blows without too much of an issue, it's the smaller wearable-focused companies that are now feeling the pinch.

Pebble is one of the original wearable manufacturers, coming forth from a wildly popular Kickstarter campaign. The company got into the wearable scene before most of the larger manufacturers, which gave it a leg up with early adopters. The company has continued to release new products that have proven popular among fans, but the competition has grown fierce and Pebble remains technologically behind in some areas, causing it to have a narrower appeal.

As a result of the growing problem, Pebble is laying off 40 employees, or about 25% of its staff. These layoffs will occur this week and are largely to blame on a less-than-ideal fundraising scene. In an effort to pull ahead, Pebble will focus even more on health and fitness, working with partners to offer benefits and an ecosystem that other wearables can't. The company is also hoping for a good launch in India, where it will begin selling its products next month as part of a partnership with Amazon.

Whatever the future may hold for Pebble, we'll be keeping an eye on it. Stay tuned.

Marshmallow Rolling Out To The Moto X Play

Posted: 23 Mar 2016 10:57 AM PDT

Android Marshmallow

Good news for all you Moto X Play-ers out there.  The Marshmallow update is rolling out to the pseudo flagship Motorola brought to us last year.  In addition to bringing all the new features packed into Marshmallow (ie. Doze, App Permissions, etc), the update also packs the monthly security updates.

If you haven't received the update yet, jump into your settings and scroll down to "about device."  In there you'll be able to do a manual check for the update.

Latest HTC 10 teaser touts the ‘new boom’

Posted: 23 Mar 2016 10:41 AM PDT

Yesterday, HTC officially confirmed that we don't have much longer to wait to see what the company's newest flagship — the HTC 10, as it's known right now — will look like and what it will feature. But that's not slowing the company down when it comes to teases.

HTC has taken to Twitter once again to drop yet another tease about the upcoming handset, this time focusing on the audio side of things. The tweet boasts a pretty dark images with chrome accents, and "Audio 10″ in between. Along with text that reads, "Here comes the new boom. You'll hear it. #powerof10."

It's an interesting tease, and one that should get plenty of people's ears perked considering all of the rumors to date have outlined HTC's next flagship not being equipped with the front-facing speakers typically associated with BoomSound. Granted, that term has also been tagged along with software, too, featuring things like Music mode and Theater mode, so it will be interesting to see what kind of special features the HTC 10 has up its sleeve when it comes to audio.

Are you getting excited for the HTC 10?

HTC To Announce the HTC 10 On April 12

Posted: 23 Mar 2016 10:41 AM PDT

HTC Event

The upcoming HTC 10 has been pretty steadily leaked over the past few weeks but the leaks will soon be coming to an end as an announcement date has been set.  HTC will be announcing their 2016 flagship on April 12, 2016 at 8AM ET at HTC.com

While HTC still hasn't confirmed any specs, rumoured specs include a 5.1 QHD Super LCD 5 display, Snapdragon 820, 4GB RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, 3000 mAh battery and a "world class" 12MP camera.  There's also a fingerprint reader on this guy and it will be running Marshmallow out of the box.

I feel like I've been saying this every year since the M8 but HTC really really needs the HTC 10 to help turn things around for the company.  Their VR headset seems like it will help and their rumoured partnership with Google to produce the Nexus' will be a huge boost but they still need their flagship to perform well for the company to really turn their fortunes around.

Hopefully this is the year that HTC storms back!

You will be able to use Android Pay everywhere contactless payments are accepted, including your favorite places at which to shop and eat every day, such as Boots, Costa Coffee, Waitrose, and more. You can also tap and pay as you go across London on the Tube, buses and trains, using Android Pay with Transport for London (TfL).

Blossom 8 Is An 8-Zone Smart Watering Controller For Your Yard (Preorder Price $99)

Posted: 23 Mar 2016 03:10 AM PDT

Blossom8-1

When I was growing up, each summer saw us moving up to the mountains for 3 months and into a nice house with a small garden. Every few days, my father would spend his afternoons watering the different plants, flowers, and trees, making sure each one got the attention it needs. However, there were days when taking care of the yard was either too time-consuming either too tiring, conflicting with social events, requiring he maintains it even when he was exhausted after work, and so on.

Android Wear v1.5 Adds Proper Support For Marshmallow's Doze Mode [APK Download]

When Android 6.0 landed, it brought a big new battery-saving feature called Doze mode. While it was great at reining in known troublemakers like social network apps and misbehaving games, Doze had a bad habit of knocking out apps with genuinely important roles to play. One such app was Android Wear. Today, a new update to the Wear companion app adds awareness of Doze Mode and prompts users to add it to the protected list.

B&H posts price for LG G5 Cam Plus module

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 03:55 PM PDT

The LG G5 is a very unique phone in that there are modules to augment its functionality. Pull out the bottom, insert the new module, and you have something cool, like an DAC or a camera grip. LG has announced a camera grip with physical controls, and a audio DAC for high-quality music.

Unfortunately, no official pricing has been announced, so we've been left to wonder if the accessories would be affordable. B&H has posted the Cam Plus module on its site with a price, and though we don't know if it's an official price, it may be. The module is $69.99, which gets you a grip for more comfortable photography, controls for the shutter, zoom, and video recording, an LED indicator, and an extra 1200mAh to bump the G5′s total battery capacity up to 4000mAh.

It's not that expensive for what it gets you, but it's not particularly cheap either. Fans of the LG G5 camera will surely buy one of these for trips and adventures. LG may be onto something with these modules, but only time will tell.

Google warns about security vulnerability found in Android

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 03:40 PM PDT

It looks like there's a new security vulnerability found in Android, and Google is warning people about it. It's a serious one, too, as an app can get root access to your phone simply by being installed. Root access means this app has access to a bunch of functions that are normally restricted, like modifying software.

Thankfully, Google is already on it. Apps that take advantage of this vulnerability are blocked by Verify Apps, so if you try to install an app that uses this vulnerability — whether from Google Play or outside of it — the install will be blocked. You have to make sure Verify Apps is enabled, though.

Google has also released a patch for this problem, and Nexus devices will receive it during the next monthly security update. Other devices may have to wait longer, and devices no longer supported by manufacturers are out of luck. Security updates are a big problem in the Android world, but at least Google has our backs with Verify Apps and other such features.
