When Android 6.0 landed, it brought a big new battery-saving feature called Doze mode. While it was great at reining in known troublemakers like social network apps and misbehaving games, Doze had a bad habit of knocking out apps with genuinely important roles to play. One such app was Android Wear. Today, a new update to the Wear companion app adds awareness of Doze Mode and prompts users to add it to the protected list.

Stitcher Radio Podcast Manager Updated With Variable Speed Playback (But Only For Marshmallow) And Bug Fixes

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 01:20 PM PDT

2016-03-28 20.01.24If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you probably spend at least ten hours or more every week getting through them. A common feature of podcast playback tools is the option to speed up playback, allowing at least some users to get through these almost entirely spoken-word programs more quickly. Popular Android podcast manager Stitcher now includes this option... but oddly, only for devices running Android 6.0 or later. The tool can speed up playback to 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x (which is insanely fast).

AirDroid Adds Automatic Local Network Photo Backup To Its Bag Of Tricks

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 11:40 AM PDT

screenshot-pcAnyone who's been hanging around Android Police knows that AirDroid is one of our very favorite tools. And a big part of what makes it so great is that the developers are constantly improving both the core file transfer functions and adding brand new stuff more or less constantly. The latest additional goodie is a photo backup system, more or less like the ones featured in Dropbox or Google Drive and their imitators, but minus the online cloud storage element.

LG UX 5.0 video showcases some of the new custom software features in the G5

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 08:07 AM PDT

One of the features of the upcoming LG G5 is its proprietary software, called LG UX 5.0. In honor of the Life's Good crew's newest flagship arriving soon, the company has put together a quick video showcasing the new software features that future owners should expect to find in their new device.

The video starts with Friends — LG Friends, to be specific — and showcases how LG handles the G5 being a home base for a variety of different accessories, like the LG Cam Plus, the LG 360 Cam, and the LG Hi-Fi Plus. It quickly moves into the camera, covering all of the new features that LG put together. One of them is Auto Shot, which will determine when you're posing for a selfie and automatically snap the photo for you so you don't have to worry about tapping the shutter button. There are several film filters, too, and the Multi-View feature will let you create a photo or video collage quickly and easily.

LG is also offering a trio of home options. The first is the new Home, which basically puts all of your installed app icons on the home screen. There's also the Easy Home option, which makes the font bigger and has a simple layout. And, finally, the traditional Home and App Drawer home screen, which puts the more traditional design to task.

The video shows off LG Health as well, which studies your activity patterns and lets you know about exercise goals to reach; the ability to reinstall apps that you've uninstalled in the previous 24 hours; and Smart Doctor, which keeps tabs on your phone's health. And if you're upgrading to the G5 from an older Android device, LG Backup will let you wirelessly transfer content from that old handset to the new and shiny one.

You can check out the video below.

Do you plan on picking up an LG G5?

HTC planning less powerful Snapdragon 652 HTC 10 variant

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 08:07 AM PDT

The flagship HTC 10 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 SoC, but a new leak claims that there will be a cheaper, less powerful variant of the HTC 10 which will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652. Since the leak comes from Weibo and the listed price is in Chinese Yuan, we can assume that the phone will be available for sale in China. There's no indication that the Snapdragon 652 variant of the HTC 10 will be making its way to North America or Europe, but the phone could be key in adoption of HTC's new phone in markets where the Snapdragon 820 variant would be out of reach for most consumers.

The SD652 version of the HTC 10 is listed for RMB 3,799 ($585 USD), a good 24% less than the SD820 model, which the leak lists at RMB 4,999 ($768 USD). While the Snapdragon 652 can't really compete with the brute force of the 820, it's still an impressive chip. Benchmark scores show that it falls somewhere between the Snapdragon 800 and 810 when it comes to processing and 3D rendering.

If HTC were to release a Snapdragon 652 variant of the HTC 10 in your market for $150 less than the Snapdragon 820 model, would you opt for the cheaper version?

The Galaxy S7 Active is real, according to Samsung’s Level app

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 07:48 AM PDT

Last year's Galaxy S6 drew high praise from many reviewers, but one noted drawback was that the device lacked water and dust resistance, which had been a selling point for the Galaxy S5. To help quell some of the complaints, Samsung created the Galaxy S6 Active, a more ruggedized version of the popular flagship. The Galaxy S6 Active featured dust and water resistance as well as a larger battery, but was restricted to AT&T.

This year, Samsung added dust and water resistance to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, solving the issue that arose last year. According to the Samsung Level app, however, Samsung has a Galaxy S7 Active in the works. The app lists all supported devices and included in that list is the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active.

With the standard Galaxy S7 already packing dust and water resistance, SamMobile theorizes that the Galaxy S7 Active may feature military grade protection, with an alternative design to go along with it. This level of ruggedization would provide protection against liquids, drops, particles, shocks, and more. Additionally, the Galaxy S7 Active could feature a larger battery, much like its predecessor.

Unfortunately, we don't know any details regarding the availability on the Galaxy S7 Active. It's a mystery as to when it will be released, and whether or not it will be available on more carriers than just AT&T. Keep it locked on Android and Me for more info on the Galaxy S7 Active.
