OnePlus publicly releases nearly completed Marshmallow test build for OnePlus 2

Posted: 30 Mar 2016 03:08 PM PDT

Owners of the OnePlus 2 can now run a nearly ready test build of Marshmallow if they're feeling adventurous, as OnePlus has released this build to the public. It's only usable by flashing it, so it's not for the every day user, and it still contains a few small bugs that need to be ironed out. It's not the official release, but the company says it's suitable for a "daily driver."

Marshmallow is a great upgrade in general, with new features like Doze, Now on Tap, customizable permissions (OnePlus had this, but this time it's Google supported), better audio control, and more. Along with that, OnePlus has made some big changes in OxygenOS 3.0.

  • New OnePlus Camera UI: UI has been cleaned up: swiping up/down now switches between photo/video, whereas HD/HDR and flash settings live in the top right corner, you can now change the aspect ratio and toggle grid view without going all the way to the settings
  • New wallpaper picker: Easily preview and set both home screen and lock screen wallpaper in one place.
  • Shelf UX has been improved: No more edit mode, long press boards to rearrange or remove
  • General system performance improvements: Benchmarked 47% faster than OxygenOS 2.2.1 on key test scenarios
  • Fingerprint performance improvement: Tested 45% faster than OxygenOS 2.2.1 on average
  • Settings changes: Old app permissions are gone, say hi to new (native Android) app permissions., alert Slider has its own entry point with more customization options, improved settings menu readability by changing the order a bit
  • March security patches

But there are some problems you should be aware of.

  • Your fingerprints will not be preserved after you flash the new build, so you will need to re-register your fingerprints if you have fingerprint authentication set up
  • Maxxaudio tuner and presets will be removed
  • Rolling back to previous OxygenOS versions will not work without wiping data
  • Some soak testers have experienced wifi speed issues which we are investigating
  • Some of your old apps won't work without an upgrade to M compatible versions
  • Shelf frequent apps board size might shrink if you are dirty flashing. Remove and re-add the board and it will fix itself
  • Language localization is still being improved

Hit the source link if you want to download this newest build, but be sure to read all the warnings and instructions! Flashing is pretty simple, but it also has the potential for problems. If you're not comfortable flashing this build, the official OxygenOS 3.0 update should be rolling out fairly soon once the final bugs are ironed out.

Google puts stock calculator app with Android Wear support on Play Store

Posted: 30 Mar 2016 02:08 PM PDT

We're surprised this one took so long, but Google has finally released the stock calculator app on the Play Store for all to use. Many stock Google apps have been available on the Play Store for quite some time now, but it's nice to see Google's functional and quick calculator join the club.

An extra bonus is that this app has Android Wear support. You get a calculator on your wrist, and the slide out panel that usually has your advanced functions on a phone now has the modifiers. The buttons are plenty big to comfortably press (at least on a first gen Moto 360) and it's pretty well designed. I'm sure it'll be useful at some point. Hit the source link to download it for yourself!

Lyft Introduces Carpool Option To Help Drivers Earn Money Off Commutes, Rolls Out Waze Integration Nationwide

Using the carpool lane can cut time out of commutes, but it comes with the hassle of coordinating with another worker. That's annoying. It's so annoying that Lyft is now willing to pay people to do it. Sort of.

Lyft Carpool is a new way for drivers to potentially make hundreds of dollars a month driving to work like they already do, as long as they're willing to drive someone who pays a few bucks to sit in the passenger seat.

Amazon bans non-compliant USB Type C cables from being sold on its site

Posted: 30 Mar 2016 01:39 PM PDT

USB Type C is an awesome new technology, with a reversible cable and higher speeds for future proofing devices for many years. The reversible part is quite useful in particular, as micro USB orientation can be a pain. But all new technology suffers from growing pain, and USB Type C is no exception. The problem is, the pain is coming from the third party.

Benson Leung, a Google employee, had taken it upon himself to test various USB Type C cables to see how well they work, and if they're compliant with the standards set by the USB Implementers Forum Inc. The result was that many cables weren't compliant and risked very real damage to your device. Unfortunately, he had his Chromebook Pixel damaged by one of these cables.

Although it took a while, Amazon has now banned the sale of non-compliant USB Type C cables on its site, which means a lot of the bad cables will be disappearing. This doesn't guarantee that every cable on Amazon is safe, but it's a big help for those who don't know how much of a risk a cheap Type C cable is. If you're in need of a cable, check out Leung's Amazon profile for his reviews.

There are many ways to go about watching movies on an Android phone or tablet, but when you fire up Google Play, one method takes center stage. That's Play Movies, Google's out-of-the-box way for you to buy or rent licenses to stream TV shows and films.

Play Movies isn't available everywhere in the world. Sometimes it comes to new countries one at a time. Sometimes it comes in batches. Right now, another country has made the list.

Gather 'round, gather 'round! The time has come to answer the age old question: What's on your phone? I get this question A LOT, but I don't answer it often since it changes so much. I thought I'd take a bit of a spin on it and also show you what I did to make a particular device (in this case the S7 Edge) really feel like my own. I'm convinced there's a metric here.

Try to imagine any possible way that this is not awesome. Monopoly would go faster if you could fill all that mortgage nonsense with epic infantry battles, and someone might actually play backgammon if you could call in an orbital strike. Until that wonderful day arrives, we have Talisman: The Horus Heresy, a re-working of Talisman within the popular sci-fi setting of Warhammer 40,000.

For regular travelers or those that have some compatibility issues with their local carriers, there is now an option to override the automatic country detection the app currently performs. Those users on Android N can also look forward to a fix for a pretty critical bug that could cause Messenger to crash with a simple YouTube link.

After the Google Calendar, Camera, Keyboard, and plenty of others, today's the day for the Calculator to graduate too.

This time around, all three get the ability to export to PDF, something we take for granted when using the full versions of Office. They also get a new feature allowing users to insert images directly from your camera, which of course is a feature more unique to mobile.
