CNN Android App Update Brings 360-Degree Videos And, At Last, Chromecast Support

CNN rose to prominence at a time when 24/7 cable news coverage was an impressive technological feat. These days keeping the camera running doesn't wow people quite like it used to.

Sometimes CNN is quick to make an app that embraces new form factors. I remember playing with a demo on iPads back when they were new. I vaguely recall the cable news network not wasting much time with a Honeycomb version as well.

Here’s The BlackBerry Priv Running Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Posted: 31 Mar 2016 01:43 PM PDT

blackberry-priv-marshmallow

The Priv was BlackBerry's first real Android smartphone and the company promised it would be working hard to release the Android 6.0 update. Now we can finally see what it looks like.

A new video (shown above) has surfaced online and it shows the phone running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Visually, not much has changed as the build itself looks very similar to the previous Android 5.1 version they shipped the phone with originally. Which means Stock Android!

All the changes are all under the hood and the phone seems to be running on the slightly outdated February 2016 security patch. No further information was given as to when the update will reach its users in the form of an OTA.

Verizon adding $20 fee to device purchases

Posted: 31 Mar 2016 01:43 PM PDT

Contract upgrade fees are nothing new. You have to give the carrier money so you can proceed with giving them money for a smartphone and service, to cover support costs and such. But with Verizon, buying a device full price or going with payment plans meant no fees. Unfortunately, that's changing on April 4.

Verizon will now be charging a $20 fee for all device purchases, whether you buy a device on a payment plan or buy at full price. Yes, you'll have to pay a $20 fee to buy a full price device. Verizon released this statement:

"The upgrade fee helps cover our increased support costs associated with customers switching devices. Customers can pay the charge when they upgrade, bill it to their account or trade in an old device to offset the cost. The fee for upgrading on device payment is still half of the two-year contract upgrade fee."

While none of you should be surprised, it's still an unpleasant change. Being hit with a $20 fee when trying to give Verizon $700 isn't exactly ideal. Verizon also says that Sprint charges a $30 fee while AT&T charges $15. T-Mo is the outlier with no fee. Of course, you can continue bringing your own devices to Verizon with no fee, so Nexus devices are always a good option.

Will this sway your decision to switch to or remain with Verizon? Or is this just another little fee you'll endure? Leave a comment!

Opera 36 Update Delivers New Tab Switcher, Web App Installer, Chromium 49, And More

Posted: 31 Mar 2016 01:22 PM PDT

Opera

Opera serves the same role on Android that it fulfills on desktops, being that quirky browser that one or two people you know checked out a while back. There's that one guy who swears it's better than anything else out there.

For that guy, a new update is making its way around Google Play. This release introduces a new tab browser that arranges tabs into horizontal windows. Two rows move simultaneously, with the lower row letting you swap between pages in a hurry.

Google Is Testing A New Group Conversation App Called Spaces

Posted: 31 Mar 2016 01:22 PM PDT

Google probably has tons of projects in testing that we'll never hear about until they come out (assuming they do). One of these unannounced projects is an app called Spaces. It's part of a non-public beta in the Play Store, but we've gotten a look at the app. You can think of it as a group messaging app, but more focused.

Spaces is supposed to be a tool for generating group conversations around specific topics.

LEGO Jurassic World Lets Players Explore All Four Movies As The Real Stars: The Dinosaurs

Posted: 31 Mar 2016 10:37 AM PDT

image (8)Okay, so Jurassic World didn't exactly live up to the groundbreaking standards of the original movie. That probably doesn't matter to the herds of kids who went to see it just to watch some dinosaurs scaring the crap out of a bunch of puny humans. That being the case, a tie-in with LEGO for toys and games is pretty brilliant. After a substantial delay, you can now play the LEGO video game version of Jurassic World, which also includes bits from the original Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and that other one with Téa Leoni.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, First Announced For The SHIELD Android TV At Launch, Is Finally Available On The Play Store

borderlandsWay back at the Game Developer's Conference just over a year ago, NVIDIA announced the SHIELD Android TV. While the presentation included streaming PC games and NVIDIA's GeForce NOW (formerly GRID) streaming game service, the announcement also focused on full-version PC games that would be getting full Android ports built especially for the SHIELD's high-powered Tegra X1 hardware. We've seen precious little of that - few of the big-name games first announced with the SHIELD have come to fruition aside from Doom 3 and Metal Gear Rising.

[Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3] Facebook Is Testing A New Call Tab On Messenger

Posted: 31 Mar 2016 03:16 AM PDT

Much like Google, Facebook runs a lot of tests on its products, trying to gauge whether new things are a good idea. It tested a material update to Messenger, the Reactions button and Messenger SMS (which is still ongoing), multiple Messenger accounts, and probably more besides. Now it's got a new one for Messenger as well: a call tab.

You probably already know that users can make both video and voice calls through Messenger; there's even an app for it, although it hasn't been updated since August 2015.

You Can Now Buy USB Type-C Cables From Amazon With Peace Of Mind!

Posted: 30 Mar 2016 08:56 PM PDT

USB Type C

In 2016, it's all about the USB Type-C.  The majority of smartphone manufacturers have been adopting the new reversible port and it's just a matter of time before it becomes the standard for all plugs.  Early on, however, purchasing additional cables has been a little bit dicey.  Some cables were not meeting standards and had the potential to actually fry your device!

Well you can now shop with a little bit more peace of mind as one of the biggest marketplaces in the world has stepped up to protect us.  Amazon has now added non-compliant USB Type-C's to their prohibited listing list.  Up till now we've had to rely on one Benson Leung to test out cables for us and while I still advise checking to see if Benson has reviewed a cable before buying, those non-compliant cables should fade away soon enough.

Well done Amazon, well done.

AT&T said to be considering building a Cyanogen-powered Android phone

Posted: 30 Mar 2016 05:38 PM PDT

AT&T has been selling phones to subscribers for a long time, from manufacturers like Motorola, Apple, HTC, Samsung, and many others over the years. But apparently there's been talks to make it possible for AT&T to sell its own phone at some point down the line, too.

According to a report from The Information, AT&T is said to be considering, or has at least considered, building its own phone to sell to subscribers. To do that, the Big Blue carrier had been in discussions with manufacturer ZTE to create the hardware, but apparently export sanctions made those talks dissolve for now.

However, the bigger part of the news could be the inclusion of Cyanogen in all of this. The company has apparently been in talks with AT&T to build the wireless carrier's own version of Android for these smartphones, something akin to Amazon's FireOS. That goes as far as the way the software would be handled and updated, with AT&T being in full control from the outset. This might make updates slow, and some features might not ever make it into the phone as Google rolls them out into Android, just as we've seen from other heavily modified variants of Android.

Cyanogen builds and licenses an alternate version of Android already, so a move like this wouldn't be completely unheard of for the company. However, this would easily be the biggest deal to date.

As it stands, though, there's no word on how dedicated AT&T is to this plan anymore, or if talks are still ongoing and something is already being built. Still, if AT&T does build its own phone and Cyanogen gets to create a version of Android to get it done, that's pretty big news for a company that's been part of the Android community for a long time.

Samsung announces Galaxy A9 Pro for the Chinese market

Posted: 30 Mar 2016 04:38 PM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro SM-A9100 is the successor to the Galaxy A9, which packed some pretty good specs and an already massive 4,000 mAh battery. The A9 Pro one ups it in almost every way, but the selling point is the insane 5,000 mAh battery, rivaling many tablets in capacity.

Other specs include a 6-inch 1080p AMOLED display, a 1.8GHz Snapdragon 652 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 16MP rear camera, an 8MP front camera, and Marshmallow out of the box. This comes in at a price of 3499 yuan, or around $541. Unfortunately, it is a China exclusive device, so most of us won't have a chance to buy it.

The fact that we don't have huge batteries in phones here is a bit ridiculous, as many people would gladly sacrifice thickness and other specs for a battery that big. Hopefully we'll be getting something similar in the States someday. Would you buy a Galaxy A9 Pro? Leave a comment!
