Project Fi App Updated With Data Usage Widget Call Forwarding Toggle And More

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 02:44 PM PDT

Google's in-house Project Fi has a great app compared to what you get from other carriers. Not that it would be hard to make that happen, but it is pretty good. It's getting even better today with an update (version I.2.1) that adds a new widget and better control over call forwarding.

As usual, Google has not yet updated the Play Store app listing with a full changelog. A Googler did, however, post a list of the changes on Reddit, so we've got the full details below.

Google is sending out invites to test a new travel app

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 01:15 PM PDT

Since the rise of Google Maps, Google has always placed a focus on travel. As of late, the company has done even more with travel, with things such as the launch of Destinations within Google Search. Now Google looks to be expanding further, as the company is beginning to send out invites to certain members of its Local Guides program. These invites are for a new travel app coming from Google, but there aren't many hints on what this new travel app will consist of.

Those who were invited were asked to fill out a survey, which asked some pretty typical questions, but then also asked about upcoming travel plans, including the dates of the trip(s). With testing beginning within the next couple of weeks, Google seems to be looking for those who will be traveling during the test period. At least one member of our staff was invited and applied to be a tester, so if any details are allowed to be shared about the program, you'll be sure to hear them.

Any others receive an invite to the program?

Crossy Road v1.6 With Local Multiplayer Support Is Now Live In The Play Store

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 01:08 PM PDT

cr

The simple gameplay of Crossy Road has made it a hugely popular casual game on Android, but now it's a bit more competitive with the addition of multiplayer mode. Up to four players can cross the road (and other things) at the same time and do their best to sabotage each other.

Crossy Road multiplayer is accessible from the main screen in the lower right menu. Unfortunately, it's only local multiplayer right now—you and the other players need to be on the same WiFi network.

Google adds live TV listings to search results

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 12:47 PM PDT

Google aims to provide as much information as possible to you before showing you related links. Cards in search results give you info on cars, diseases, weather, and a lot of other useful topics. Google is adding another to the list, so now search results will display live TV listings.

If you search for a show, you'll get info on when it's playing and on which channel it'll be on. With Google Search always a tap away on your phone, this makes it the easiest way to find out when your favorite show is starting. It'll also tell you what apps and services can be used to watch the show.

I know a lot of younger people are getting rid of TV altogether, so tell us whether you would find this useful in the comments!

Sony releases Android N Developer Preview for Xperia Z3

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 12:17 PM PDT

If you don't have a Nexus device lying around but you do have an old Sony Xperia Z3, you can now give Android N a shot. Sony has released an official Android N Developer Preview build for the aging Z3 for developers to try their apps on.

Flashing the update is easier than expected. You do it through the Xperia Companion PC software, which guides you through the install. You won't have to deal with any complicated custom recoveries or ROMs, which is awesome.

Android N brings a host of new features like multi-window, bundled notifications, an expanded Doze mode, and more. All this will allow developers to make their apps compatible with Android N before its release. It's not daily driver software, it's still a preview and not an official update, but if you have Xperia Z3 lying around as a spare, give it a shot! Hit the source link for full instructions and let us know how you like it!

Google Is Preparing To Test A New Travel App Sometime Next Week

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 11:35 AM PDT

Travel

Google is apparently reaching out to Maps explorers with word of a new app heading down the pipeline.

The email invite calls on recipients to be the first to try a new app for travelers. There isn't much in the way of details, other than the availability for both Android and iOS. But given the recent launch of Google Destinations, travel is clearly an area of interest for the company.

Sneaky Platformer Stealth Inc. 2: A Game Of Clones Is Now Available For The SHIELD TV And SHIELD Tablet

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 11:01 AM PDT

image (2)The title for the sequel to Stealth Inc. is a pun on HBO's Game of Thrones fantasy series. Perhaps that's why NVIDIA published it to the Play Store this week: with the next season starting on Sunday, there's no better chance to capitalize on at least a few dozen people mistakenly putting the wrong search phrase into Google. But underneath its pop culture allusions there's a solid platform-puzzle game, and now it's available for the SHIELD Android TV and SHIELD Tablet (sorry, SHIELD Portable owners...

The ZUK Z2 Pro is Lenovos new Chinese flagship

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 10:06 AM PDT

Lenovo has been trying to get into the mobile game for years, but hasn't had much success under its own brand name, which is better known for PCs. As such, Lenovo has been purchasing, restructuring and utilizing other brand names to delve into the market. The most well-known is Moto, formerly Motorola, which Lenovo has used to penetrate the US market. A new up-and-comer among Lenovo's brands is ZUK, which has just announced its new Chinese flagship.

ZUK's Z2 Pro packs a hefty list of specs, including a 5.2-inch 1080p Super AMOLED screen that's covered in 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 and features brightness settings between 1 and 500 nits. The screen also packs a 100% sRGB color gamut and is nearly borderless. The sum of all of those parts is a fantastic display.

Other specs include a 2.15GHz quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor, 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.0 storage, 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS and 1.34um sensor for better low-light pictures, front-facing 8-megapixel camera, 3100mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and USB-Type C charging port, front-facing fingerprint scanner with self-learning capabilities and support for wet fingers, dual nano SIM card slots and Cat 6 LTE support. One feature of note that's missing is NFC support. NFC, however, isn't commonly used for payments in China, so this isn't a glaring oversight.

ZUK has designed the Z2 Pro to be a companion during fitness, and has added plenty of features to ensure that it's up to the task. The device is built with a rollcage design that features a shock absorber between the back of the device and the mid-frame, which is 4.6mm thick and made of metal. Lenovo has also placed an optical heart rate sensor on the back of the device and has enabled the Z2 Pro to track uphill movements and running cadence for better fitness tracking. Finally, the Z2 Pro's rear camera also doubles as a 15-level UV sensor, which allows you to better judge whether you need sunblock or not.

The device software is built on Android, but features ZUK's heavy ZUI 2.0 overlay. Interestingly enough, the Z2 Pro can sync with iCloud, allowing iPhone users to easily transfer over to the Z2 Pro.

The ZUK Z2 Pro will be available for pre-order tomorrow and the fully-specced model is priced at 2,699 yuan, or roughly $420 USD. ZUK will also be releasing a variant with less storage and RAM on May 10, but hasn't announced a price for that model. In any case, you're still scoring a fantastic deal, particularly with the fully-specced model, which is cheaper than nearly every other flagship.

ZUK is launching the Z2 Pro in China, but may also be bringing it to Europe and the Middle East.

What are your thoughts on this powerful new flagship?

Microsoft Translator Inches Ever Closer To Google Translate With New Image Translate And System-Wide Translation On Marshmallow

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 07:07 AM PDT

microsoft-translator-image-translate

When it first launched last summer, Microsoft Translator had some potential but a lot of catch-up to do with Google's own Translate. No offline mode, no natural conversation mode, no Android Wear app, and many other missing features made me refrain from recommending it when I compared it against Translate. But Microsoft has been updating its app, bridging the gap with each new version, adding all of these features and more like Klingon support and a kickass Android Wear integration.
