The default dialer app that comes with the latest Android N Developer Preview has a small but significant change.

When you fire up the Google Phone app, an indicator now appears alongside the middle tab showing how many calls you've missed. Those calls are marked in bold underneath.

Interestingly, this update doesn't just appear as version 3.0 for Android N. A release candidate has made its way to other devices.

Android Companion App For Homefront: The Revolution Is Already Live

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 11:35 AM PDT

unnamedThe followup to 2011's near-future first-person shooter Homefront is set to come out in a few weeks, but the companion app is already live in the Play Store. It promises news and information about the game ahead of release, plus it will "evolve" after the game comes out. How mysterious!

Homefront (the first one) tells the story of a military occupation of the western US by a unified Korea. The sequel takes place four years later as the American resistance fights Korean forces in Philadelphia.

Google and Microsoft agree to drop complaints to regulators

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 09:54 AM PDT

Truce? Truce.

Google and Microsoft have both made announcements today that the two will be dropping all current complaints to regulators between the companies, and will seek to avoid further regulatory complaints by working to solve issues together. This news follows last year's announcement that Google and Microsoft will stop pursuing patent litigation against each other.

While Microsoft has denied any connection, this news comes interestingly timed as European regulators have just started pursuing complaints against Android for what it calls unfair practices. Microsoft is not taking a stance on the issue, but did drop its membership with FairSearch and ICOMP, two groups linked to regulatory issues with Google's search business.

This is not expected to change either company's business practices.

Telus Update

It took a while for Samsung to get their Marshmallow updates rolling out for the 2015 flagships but those are now out and they're keeping things chugging along as the 2014 flagships will be getting their updates next month!

According to the latest update on Telus' software update schedule, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is due to get it's update to Marshmallow on May 2.  The 2014 phablet, the Note 4, will get theirs a couple weeks later on May 16.  And just to top it all off, the Galaxy Tab S2 will also be getting updated to Marshmallow on May 2.

Of course, these dates are subject to change as we saw with the S6 line up but it's nice to at least see some tentative dates listed.

Waze Has Expanded Speed Limit Testing To Parts Of The US

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 08:36 AM PDT

Waze

Waze can tell you how to get where you're going. At the end of last month, it started telling people how fast to go on the way. These speed limit notifications were only supported in certain countries, of which the United States was not one.

Not officially, anyway. As it turns out, Waze has been testing the feature in the States for the past few weeks. While Waze hasn't yet issued a nationwide rollout, it has started testing in certain cities and states across the country.

US Mobile Passport Expands: Now Available For Newark And JFK Airports

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 06:36 AM PDT

MobilePassport

If you've ever flown into the United States, you know how frustrating the customs declaration forms can be. Not only do you have to write your entire biographical and passport details, but you also have to itemize the things you're bringing into the country, and include details about your trip. They're time consuming, and if you make a mistake, you have to start from scratch.

Mobile Passport takes this process and makes it much less frustrating.

Random Flix Plays A Random Netflix Episode When You Don't Want To Choose For Yourself

So many TV shows, so little time. And why does it have to be so incredibly difficult to choose a show and an episode to watch? Why do services expect you to know what you want to see, instead of throwing stuff at your screen and hoping you'll be hooked. Like... a regular TV. We've gone full circle people, and it turns out our old ways weren't that bad.

Random Flix makes this decision for you.

Bank Of America's Android App Now Supports Marshmallow's Native Fingerprint Sign-In

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 06:06 AM PDT

bankofamerica-fingerprint

Bank of America's Android has allowed fingerprint sign-ins since September 2015, or so it would like you to think. Support seems to have been limited to Samsung's fingerprint sensor and didn't work on the Nexus 5X or 6P with their Nexus Imprint. Reviewers on the Play Store complained about that and the developers finally updated the app to fix the issue.

The new version of the Bank of America app seems to support Android's native fingerprint APIs that were introduced in Marshmallow, and thus the Nexus Imprint sensor on Nexus devices.

Social networks aiming to change the way we communicate are everywhere. Messaging applications that want to do it all are also spreading like wildfire. With Facebook, WhatsApp, and Snapchat taking a big piece of the cake, it's hard for a service to differentiate itself, but Airtime manages to do just that.

The app started 4 years ago as a web service, but faced lots of technical difficulties so its founder Sean Parker shut it down and started working in the background on something better.

Google Play Music's Search Bar Might Soon Look Very Different

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 03:21 AM PDT

play-music-search-bar

Google is on a crusade against search bars. Or so it seems to us at least. Late last year, the Play Store received an interface revamp that dumped the green search bar in favor of an overlaid grey bar with a hamburger menu, a voice search icon, and the words Google Play in grey that disappeared as soon as you started typing. Then a few days ago, it changed Play Books' search bar to a look that sits somewhere in the middle, with the blue bar switching into the grey one when you tapped to search.

Samsung And The Weather Channel Pair Up To Launch An Exclusive Weather App

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 02:51 AM PDT

scwahero

Samsung and The Weather Channel aren't two companies you would naturally pair together, but they've done just that: the two have partnered up to produce a specialized version of the weather app, exclusive to Samsung's S6 edge, S7 edge, and Note 5.

As it's produced by The Weather Channel, the main function is to tell the user the weather conditions. This works well enough: currently, conditions are 49°F outside, according to the app, although it feels like 44°F apparently.

Hype Machine Drops From $3.99 To Completely Free On The Play Store

Posted: 22 Apr 2016 01:35 AM PDT

HypeMachine-logo

Hype Machine isn't your typical music discovery service. It relies on music blogs to aggregate the most recent and talked about music tracks across the internet and from various genres. You can only listen to songs when the original blog has posted a link to SoundCloud, Bandcamp, or Official.fm for example, but the track itself isn't hosted on Hype Machine.

The service is more geared toward the music blogging scene, providing links to the articles where each song was shared and letting you favorite blogs and users to follow what they've been posting.

Haystack TV Gets Major Update: Now Shows Streamed TV Stations Alongside Broadcast TV

One of the biggest problems with TV news is that if you're not interested in a particular story – say, sports or celebrities – you have no option but to sit through it. Haystack TV aims to solve that by turning the news into personalized streams which are curated through artificial intelligence, big data, and editorial decision-making. The idea being that if you're especially interested in finance or international affairs, you can create a TV channel just about that.

Acer Liquid Zest Plus is now official with a 5000mAh battery

Posted: 21 Apr 2016 04:48 PM PDT

Acer hosted an event today in New York City, where it spent the majority of the time showing off a variety of new personal computers. However, within the PC craziness, Acer also had an Android smartphone on hand to check out.

Acer is calling their new smartphone the Liquid Zest Plus. The smartphone with probably this year's strangest name features a 5.5-inch display and what Acer calls a "tri-focus" camera on the back, which boasts a 13-megapixel shooter. That tri-focus camera means there's three different autofocus systems: contact detection, phase detection, and laser.

The big takeaway from the Liquid Zest Plus, though, is its battery. Acer's managed to shove a 5,000mAh battery in there. Compare that to the 3,600mAh battery in Samsung's Galaxy S7 edge, or the 2,800mAh in LG's G5. It's a big battery to be sure.

As far as a release date, Acer doesn't have one yet. However, when it does launch it's expected to go for less than $250, so that's something. There's no word on whether or not the Liquid Zest Plus is soap-proof.
