TeamViewer Splits Samsung Support Off Into Two New Apps

Posted: 06 Apr 2016 02:55 PM PDT

tvSamsung was the first OEM to get native TeamViewer remote control support. The necessary support for Samsung devices had been included with the TeamViewer app ever since, but things are a little different following the latest update. There are now two new apps for Samsung phones, a host and a standard quick support app.

The reason for the change isn't clear, but it's mentioned in the changelog for the main Quick Support and host apps.

The LG G5 Will Be Pretty Easy To Fix

Posted: 06 Apr 2016 02:43 PM PDT

The LG G5 is nearly here and if you're planning on picking one up you might be happy to know that the phone should be relatively easy to fix!  As usual, the guys over at iFixit have torn apart the latest flagship and have scored it a pretty nice 8/10 when it comes to repairability.

I've done my fair share of taking phones apart and putting them back together and from the looks of it, all you'll need to replace the display is a screw driver and maybe a guitar pick.  The process really looks very very simple.  Much easier than other flagships like the HTC One M9 and Galaxy S7.

Of course, we hope you never have to go through the processing of repairing your shiny new G5 but if you do break it, a fix should be relatively easy to do yourself if you're a little bit adventurous!

AT&T matches Verizon’s upgrade fee of $20

Posted: 06 Apr 2016 01:41 PM PDT

Verizon recently enacted a $20 fee for customers upgrading with a phone payment plan or even bringing their own device. This didn't sit well with Verizon customers, as they were being charged for the ability to give Verizon money for service. Of course, Verizon used the excuse of "AT&T and Sprint do it too!" and claimed it was to cover upgrade support costs.

Not to be outdone, AT&T has raised the same fee from $15 to $20 to match Verizon. Whether you buy a device on the Next payment plan or bring your own, you'll still get charged $20. For those on contracts, the fee remains unchanged at $45.

Are you upset that both AT&T and Verizon are upping upgrade fees? While T-Mobile doesn't always have as good a network as the big two carriers, it also has no upgrade fees for phone payment plans. It's not hard to see why AT&T and Verizon are so disliked by customers.

T-Mobile rolling out EVS voice technology for better phone calls

Posted: 06 Apr 2016 01:41 PM PDT

As much as people love to say that voice calling is dead thanks to texting and online chats, it's far from the truth. T-Mobile claims its customers are making almost 600 million calls a day, and over half of those are through Voice over LTE. VoLTE was a big improvement over the archaic cellphone calls of the past, allowing calls to be made over LTE for improved (read: not awful) clarity and quality. And now, T-Mobile is taking the next step and rolling out Enhanced Voice Services (EVS).

EVS will improve call reliability on LTE due to weak signal, improve call quality by using a broader audio frequency range, and will improve both LTE and WiFi calls. And somehow, it'll benefit you even if the person you're calling doesn't have a device that supports EVS.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were updated with EVS support last week, and the LG G5 supports EVS out of the box. T-Mobile plans to add at least four more smartphones to that list by the end of the year.

Though calls are getting rarer as time goes on, they're still a critical part of communication and it's great to see T-Mobile continue to improve its network.

Android's notification system has always been a strong selling point for the platform, and Google has added a multitude of great notification features in recent years. Nevolution (from the developer of Greenify) seeks to make app notifications on Android more configurable and powerful independent of the original developers. There's even a plug-in framework so users can add more features over time.

Nevolution has been in development for a few months, so some of you might have already played with it.

Huawei announces the P9 and P9 Plus in collaboration with Leica

Posted: 06 Apr 2016 08:48 AM PDT

It wasn't long ago that Huawei announced that it would be partnering with Leica to create collaborative devices together. Today brings us the first results of that collaboration, with the new Huawei P9 and P9 Plus. The Huawei P9 is a powerful device that places a heavy emphasis on its cameras, with Huawei touting it as setting a new standard in mobile photography. Let's dive right into the specs and see what we're working with here.

  • 5.2-inch 1080p display
  • Kirin 955 octa-core processor, four cores at 2.5 GHz, four cores at 1.8GHz
  • 3GB/4GB RAM
  • 32GB/64GB storage
  • Dual-lens 12-megapixel rear camera
  • 8-megapixel front-facing camera
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • 3000mAh battery
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow with EMUI 4.1 overlay

Resting on specs alone, the P9 is impressive. While it may not boast quite as powerful of specs as some of the latest flagships, it instead touts its superiority as a device for mobile photography. The key feature is the dual-camera setup that Leica and Huawei have utilized. This consists of one 12-megapixel RGB sensor, which is designed to maximize the capture of color. The other camera is a 12-megapixel monochrome sensor, which excels at picking up details. The P9 then combines the shots from both cameras into one incredibly crisp, vivid and accurate photo.

Huawei P9

Additionally, users can capture stunning monochrome photos by only using the monochrome sensor. Huawei has made sure that it holds its end of the partnership up as well, by packing the P9 with Huawei's Hybrid Focus technology. This set-up focuses by combining laser focusing, contrast focusing and depth calculation focusing, for which the phone has a dedicated processor, to ensure fast, accurate and consistent focusing.

Huawei has also announced the P9 Plus, which differs from the P9 in three different ways, shown below.

  • 5.5-inch 1080p Press Touch display
  • 3400mAh battery
  • Dual-IC Rapid Charge, which delivers six hours of talk time in just ten minutes of charging

Both devices will initially be launching throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia on April 16. The P9 will be priced at either €599 or €649, depending on which storage and RAM configuration you choose. The P9 Plus is a bit higher priced, at €749. While the P9 and P9 Plus are both more expensive than many other devices, the pricing structure is still fair considering the Leica technology in use, as Leica products typically cost thousands of dollars.

Google Removes Merged Tabs Entirely In The Latest Chrome Dev

Posted: 06 Apr 2016 08:29 AM PDT

chrGoogle made a lot of changes to the Android UI in Lollipop, many of them successful. Chrome merged tabs was not one of those features. After first making the old style tab management the default again several weeks back, the latest Chrome Dev build removes the merged tabs option entirely.

Merged tabs was an interesting idea in theory. Rather than having a tab switcher in the browser, you would just find your tabs in the main recent apps screen.

If you're not using Google Maps as your navigation assistant, your choices of accurate and updated mapping solutions are varied, but OpenStreetMaps (OSM) remains one of the top contenders thanks to an open-source user-generated approach. There are many OSM apps on Android, but the choice is much more limited for apps that also allow users to edit and contribute data right from their phones. There's the simple OSM Contributor which is just an editor, Bertel's favorite OsmAnd which is a full-fledged navigator and editor, and now MAPS.ME is getting updated to allow for OSM editing.

Android Distribution Numbers Out For April, Android 6.0 Marshmallow Doubles To 4.6%

Posted: 05 Apr 2016 09:56 PM PDT

android_dist_apr2016

It is now the 5th of April and Google has updated their Android distribution numbers, as you'd expect from this monthly phenomenon. These numbers are updated by Google at roughly the start of every month for developers to look at so they can gen eralize what version of Android their potential install base is running and act upon it.

Last month, we saw Marshmallow at 2.3% now it has doubled to 4.6%. This number will only grow from here on out as more OEMs release their Android 6.0 OTAs (we're looking at you ASUS, BlackBerry and Sony…). The other versions saw a decrease, with Lollipop and KitKat down to 35.8% and 33.4% respectively.

The only version that did not see neither was Android 2.2 Froyo as it still remains at 0.1%.
