Marshmallow update for OnePlus One in final testing stage

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 01:51 PM PDT

We've been hearing about the OnePlus 2 Marshmallow update recently, but OnePlus One owners may have been feeling left out. Marshmallow has been out for six months now, and the newer device was getting all of the attention. But no more, as OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has released info on the upcoming update.

According to him, the Marshmallow update is in its final testing stage and will be released fairly soon. There's no ETA, but the fact that it's nearly done is great news for owners of the original OnePlus device. Support is a big part of customer satisfaction, and this should definitely make customers happy.

Reddit introduces official app for Android and iOS

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 01:51 PM PDT

Reddit is a very popular site, calling itself "the front page of the internet." Indeed it is, as it's a collection of news, photos, stories, you name it. And it's the perfect service to use on mobile (and let's be honest, the desktop site sucks).

Until now, Android users have had to use third-party apps. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as some of those apps were fantastic. iOS users gained a semi-official app when Reddit bought Alien Blue. Now both operating systems are getting their own official apps.

For Android, a new app was designed and released. Reddit was planning to upgrade Alien Blue further, but decided to just create a new app from the ground up. The duo are now available to download on their respective app stores.

If you want to try it out for yourself and see if it can replace your favorite third party app, head to the Play Store to download it. And for iOS users, here's an iTunes link. Let us know what you think of it in the comments!

BlackBerry Priv getting price cut in a few countries, including US

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 01:16 PM PDT

The BlackBerry Priv may not be the most sought-after Android device, but it's definitely a solid one, and maybe even an underrated one. With a Samsung Edge display, high-end specs, a slide-out keyboard and Android infused with BlackBerry's security, it definitely seems like a solid buy.

To encourage people to buy the Priv, BlackBerry has permanently dropped the price in many markets. The Priv can now be purchased for $649 from BlackBerry, $100 off the previous price. You can also get 30% off accessories right now.

This price drop is effective in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. If you want to get in on this deal, head to Shop BlackBerry to buy the device! I can't be the only one tempted to do so, can I?

Google shipped quite a few updates this week, some of which are adding (or teasing) legitimate usability improvements, while others tend to be a bit more cosmetic. The new version of YouTube Gaming leans in the direction of the latter group, though some of its changes speak to subtle improvements for information visibility. There are quite a few little details and some of them aren't obvious unless you're looking very close.

Kingdom Hearts X, A Browser Game Based On The Popular Square-Enix-Disney Universe, Gets An 'Unchained' Android Port

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 11:03 AM PDT

image (6)I find most Square-Enix RPGs to be baffling in that somewhat generic anime way: as one reviewer puts it, the stories always seem to revolve around a bunch of teenagers killing Satan with the power of friendship. Throw in perhaps one of the biggest (or at least most complicated) crossovers in media history, and my head starts to spin. So it is with the Kingdom Hearts series of action-RPGs. It's been mixing Squaresoft's Final Fantasy mythos with more or less every Disney animated movie, plus its own impenetrable plots and original characters, since the first game came out on the PS2.

Android Studio 2.0

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 10:21 AM PDT

Posted by Jamal Eason, Product Manager, Android

Android Studio 2.0 is the fastest way to build high quality, performant apps for the Android platform, including phones and tablets, Android Auto, Android Wear, and Android TV. As the official IDE from Google, Android Studio includes everything you need to build an app, including a code editor, code analysis tools, emulators and more. This new and stable version of Android Studio has fast build speeds and a fast emulator with support for the latest Android version and Google Play Services.

Android Studio is built in coordination with the Android platform and supports all of the latest and greatest APIs. If you are developing for Android, you should be using Android Studio 2.0. It is available today as a easy download or update on the stable release channel.

Android Studio 2.0 includes the following new features that Android developer can use in their workflow :

  • Instant Run - For every developer who loves faster build speeds. Make changes and see them appear live in your running app. With many build/run accelerations ranging from VM hot swapping to warm swapping app resources, Instant Run will save you time every day.
  • Android Emulator - The new emulator runs ~3x faster than Android's previous emulator, and with ADB enhancements you can now push apps and data 10x faster to the emulator than to a physical device. Like a physical device, the official Android emulator also includes Google Play Services built-in, so you can test out more API functionality. Finally, the new emulator has rich new features to manage calls, battery, network, GPS, and more.
  • Cloud Test Lab Integration - Write once, run anywhere. Improve the quality of your apps by quickly and easily testing on a wide range of physical Android devices in the Cloud Test Lab right from within Android Studio.
  • App Indexing Code Generation & Test - Help promote the visibility your app in Google Search for your users by adding auto-generated URLS with the App Indexing feature in Android Studio. With a few click you can add indexable URL links that you can test all within the IDE.
  • GPU Debugger Preview - For those of you developing OpenGL ES based games or apps, you can now see each frame and the GL state with the new GPU debugger. Uncover and diagnosis GL rendering issues by capturing and analyzing the GPU stream from your Android device.
  • IntelliJ 15 Update - Android Studio is built on the world class Intellij coding platform. Check out the latest Intellij features here.

Deeper Dive into the New Features

Instant Run

Today, mobile platforms are centered around speed and agility. And yet, building for mobile can sometimes feel clunky and slow. Instant Run in Android Studio is our solution to keep you in a fast and fluid development flow. The feature increases your developer productivity by accelerating your edit, build, run cycles. When you click on the Instant Run button (), Instant Run will analyze the changes you have made and determine how it can deploy your new code in the fastest way.

New Instant Run Buttons

Whenever possible, it will inject your code changes into your running app process, avoiding re-deployment and re-installation your APK. For some types of changes, an activity or app restart is required, but your edit, build and run cycles should still be generally much faster than before. Instant Run works with any Android Device or emulator running API 14 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher.

Since previewing Instant Run at the end of last year, we've spent countless hours incorporating your feedback and refining for the stable release. Look for even more acceleration in future releases because build speeds can never be too fast. To learn how you can make the most out of Instant Run in your app development today, please check out our Instant Run documentation.

Android Emulator

The new Android Emulator is up to 3x faster in CPU, RAM, & I/O in comparison to the previous Android emulator. And when you're ready to build, ADB push speeds are a whopping 10x faster! In most situations, developing on the official Android Emulator is faster than a real device, and new features like Instant Run will work best with the new Android emulator.

In addition to speed and performance, the Android Emulator has a brand user interface and sensor controls. Enhanced since the initial release, with the emulator you can drag and drop APKs for quick installation, resize and rescale the window, use multi-touch actions (pinch & zoom, pan, rotate, tilt) and much more.

Android Emulator User Interface: Toolbar & Extend Controls Panel

Trying out the new emulator is as easy as updating your SDK Tools to 25.1.1 or higher, create a fresh Android Virtual Device using one of the recommended x86 system images and you are ready to go. Learn more about the Android Emulator by checking out the documentation.

Cloud Test Lab

Cloud Test Lab is a new service that allows you to test your app across a wide range of devices and device configurations at scale in the cloud. Once you complete your initial testing with your Android Emulator or Android device, Cloud Test Lab is a great extension to your testing process that provides you to run through a collection of tests against a portfolio of physical devices hosted in Google's data centers. Even if you do not have tests explicitly written, Cloud Test Lab can perform a basic set of tests to ensure that your app does not crash.

The new interface in Android Studio allows you to configure the portfolio of tests you want to run on Cloud Test Lab, and allows you to also see the results of your tests. To learn more about the service go here.

Setup for Cloud Test Lab

App Indexing

It is now easier for your users to find your app in Google Search with the App Indexing API. Android Studio 2.0 helps you to create the correct URL structure in your app code and add attributes in your AndroidManifest.xml file that will work the Google App Indexing service. After you add the URLs to your app, can you test and validate your app indexing code as shown here:

Google App Indexing Testing

Check out this link for more details about app indexing support in Android Studio.

GPU Debugger Preview

If you are developing OpenGL ES games or graphics-intensive apps, you have a new GPU debugger with Android Studio 2.0. Although the GPU debugger is a preview, you can step through your app frame by frame to identify and debug graphics rendering issues with rich information about the GL state. For more details on how to setup your Android device and app to work with the tool, check out the tech documentations here.

LG G5 Friends Pricing Unveiled

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 09:47 AM PDT

LG G5 Accessories

The LG G5 hits the market tomorrow and some of its Friends will soon be joining it!  While not all of its Friends will be available in Canada, three of them will, the LG Cam Plus, LG 360 Cam and LG 360 VR, and we now have some pricing for them.

The LG Cam Plus is the most affordable Friend at $99.99 (it's also been included for free with most pre-orders).  This accessory attaches to the G5 and gives you a much more camera like experience for photo taking with a dedicated shutter button and zoom dial.  The LG 360 Cam does exactly what its name suggests, captures 360 degree photos and videos using a pair of 13MP.  This accessory is quite a bit pricier at $299.99.  Last up is the LG 360 VR, LG's attempt at virtual reality.  This is also priced at $299.99.  The VR in particular may be a big miss on LG's part as there are several cheaper options out there (the GearVR being the main competition) and early reviews online aren't promising either.

We don't have a firm release date for the Friends quite yet but I imagine that the Cam Plus will be the first to hit as it's being included as a gift for pre-order-ers.  Once we have dates on the other Friends we'll let you know.  We'll also let you know if the other two Friends plan on coming to Canada.

HTC’s Latest Teaser Highlights The Camera

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 09:30 AM PDT

We're just 5 days away from the HTC 10 announcement and I for one am getting pretty excited.  And if you're feeling the same way as me, here's another teaser video from HTC to hold you over till the 12th.

This latest video highlights the camera on the HTC 10.  The camera has arguably been the worst feature on the One series thus far so HTC needs to step up in a big way with the 10.  Current rumours state that the HTC 10 will be using the same sensor found in the Nexus 6P, which is a great start as that phone is more than capable in the camera department.  The video also hints at OIS and 4K video capabilities.

How are you guys feeling about the HTC 10?  Are you excited?  Or have you already opted for the S7/S7 Edge or G5 for your 2016 phone fix?

T-Mobile is launching another promotional plan that includes two lines with a hefty chunk of monthly LTE data that doesn't break the bank.

The magenta carrier officially announced the new plan today, but it doesn't go into effect until Friday, April 8. It offers two lines with 6GB of LTE data per month each, and you'll pay only $80 per month for it. Unfortunately, T-Mobile says the promotion is just a limited time offer, but it doesn't say when the promo will end.

T-Mobile is also offering a new deal on the LG K7, saying that for a limited time you'll be able to get the phone for $0 down, regardless of your credit score. T-Mobile says it will be offering the same deal for Samsung's Galaxy Core Prime "soon."

You can take advantage of these promotions from T-Mobile's online sales, in a physical retail store, or calling them up on the phone.

[KeyBard] SwiftKey Announces ShakeSpeak, A Predictive Keyboard For All Your Shakespearean Needs

It appears SwiftKey missed April 1 by a few days, as today the company has uploaded a new keyboard app with a difference: instead of using SwiftKey's predictive talents to figure out what your next word will be, it uses none other than William Shakespeare's own words. That's right, England's most famous playwright powers the 'KeyBard,' or rather his words do.

If you start typing a famous Shakespeare quote, such as, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet," or, "Now is the winter of our discontent," the app will try and fill them in and complete the sentence.
