Samsung Galaxy Note 6 could introduce a BlackBerry Hub-type feature called Samsung Focus

Posted: 10 May 2016 02:11 PM PDT

One of the things BlackBerry handsets do very well is keep all your notifications in one centralized location. Now, if a new rumor pans out, Samsung could be taking a page out of BlackBerry's playbook to do the same thing.

According to a report from SamMobile, the Galaxy Note 6 will introduce a brand new feature called Samsung Focus. The feature will reportedly work like BlackBerry Hub, which populates notifications and content from the likes of email, calendar, text messages, and social media into one area.

With Focus, the report states that Samsung will integrate email, calendar, memos, and contacts into one area. Email will be one of the bigger focuses for the feature, which will not only compile all of the emails/notifications into one spot, but it will also let users quickly view and reply to messages per account. Galaxy Note 6 owners will be able to add calendar events, edit entries, and more, all from the single spot. And the contacts page will include all of the texts, emails, and event-specific information under their contact card as well.

Word is that the feature won't be only found on the Galaxy Note 6, as Focus will land on future Samsung devices as well.

Google Releases A Google Now On Tap Ad That's Actually Good And Informative

Posted: 10 May 2016 02:01 PM PDT

Screenshot from 2016-05-10 16-36-31

Google Now on Tap was arguably the highlight feature of Android Marshmallow. With the press of a finger, your phone or tablet would attempt to predict what you wanted to do with information available on screen. That's the glowy, abstract description anyway. What does it actually do? Well this new ad recently published to Google's YouTube channel gives a pretty clear idea.

In short, Google Now on Tap saves you from copying and pasting information from one window into another.

ES File Explorer Updated With Super-Shady 'Charging Boost' Adware

Posted: 10 May 2016 01:31 PM PDT

ES File Explorer has been on Android since time immemorial, but it has been getting a little bloated as of late. The most recent update might be the last straw for many users. ES File Explorer is now offering to speed up charging by a whopping 20%. Wow, what a deal! It's complete bunk, of course. All you really get are ads on your lock screen.

The way this new "feature" presents itself seems to vary from one device to the next.

FTC and FCC to both study security updates in the mobile industry

Posted: 10 May 2016 12:50 PM PDT

Security has been a sore spot for Android since its inception. With so many manufacturers making Android devices with their own customizations, it became impossible for Google to control updates. Instead, it has been up to the manufacturers to update devices.

With new exploits constantly being found and security being a hot topic, both the FTC and FCC launched separate inquiries into the security update practices in the mobile industry. The FTC is looking into Apple, BlackBerry, Google, HTC, LG, Microsoft, Motorola, and Samsung.

Monthly security updates are becoming more common lately, but only for certain devices. Cheaper and older devices are left in the dark, and security becomes a problem. Hopefully something productive comes out of these actions.

Beginning May 5th, a new MVNO will be joining the mobile industry in the US. Called Tello, this new player promises to rewrite the industry by offering "No Fees, Whatsoever." In doing so, it serves as a challenge to the other MVNOs in the country.

So what makes Tello different from the other MVNOs? For starters, Tello makes it easier for their customers to create their own plans. Samsung’s EVO Plus 256GB microSD card goes on sale in June for $249.99

Posted: 10 May 2016 09:50 AM PDT

For the folks out there that can't get by on the standard built-in storage from current smartphones and tablets, microSD cards are an easy way to even more.

Samsung has just announced that its biggest microSD card to date will be available soon, offering 256GB of extra storage for those people out there who are craving even more space. The EVO Plus 256GB microSD card can handle up to 95MB/s of read speeds and 90MB/s for write speeds. On top of that, the EVO Pro 256GB microSD card is IPX7 waterproof, temperature-proof, magnetic-proof, and even X-ray-proof.

Breaking down the storage options, Samsung confirms that the Class 10 card can hold up to 55,200 photos, 33 hours of full HD video, 12 hours of full 4K Ultra HD video, and up to 23,500 MP3s.

As far as a launch date and pricing go, Samsung says that the new card will be available beginning sometime in June and that it will retail for $249.99. It's a big chunk to get a card of that size right out of the gate, but sales for microSD cards are pretty common, so waiting a bit longer might not be a bad idea.

Who plans on picking this up?

Foobar2000 Arrives On Android, Direct From The Year 2010 Apparently

You may recall the popular desktop audio player foobar2000 was supposed to come to Android several years ago by way of a crowdfunding campaign. That didn't work out, but now the app has appeared in the Play Store anyway. I can confirm it exists and plays music, but it does look pretty rough.

Foobar2000 supports all the audio formats you could ever want, as well as gapless playback and UPnP streaming.

Xiaomi Mi Max now official with a 6.44-inch display

Posted: 10 May 2016 08:20 AM PDT

For fans of the Xiaomi brand and the folks who've been waiting for a really big smartphone, May 10 has finally arrived and the Mi Max is now official.

Xiaomi has officially announced the Mi Max, a new flagship smartphone that features a 6.44-inch 1920×1080 display with 2.5D glass. The phone measures in at only 7.5mm thick, which Xiaomi says makes it still pocketable, despite its gigantic screen. The phone features a 16-megapixel camera on the back which is coupled with phase detection autofocus and dual LED flash. The front-facing camera is a 5-megapixel shooter with a wide-angle lens, which features things like Beauty Mode and other features.

The Mi Max comes in three variants, and each of them boast a fingerprint reader, microSD card support, and a battery that's measured in at 4850mAh. There are some differences between them, though.

The base model features 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage, with a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor under the hood. It's priced at 1499 yuan, or $230 USD. The second variant features 3GB of RAM, bumps up the built-in storage to 64GB, and also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 quad-core processor, all for 1699 yuan ($260 USD). Finally, the high-end Mi Max boasts 4GB of RAM, 128GB of built-in storage, and a Snapdragon 652 processor for 1999 yuan ($307 USD).

xiaomimiui8

Xiaomi also revealed MIUI 8, the company's proprietary software attached to Android. It features multi-window management, a feature that will alert you when you receive spam and/or fraudulent messages, and a power management feature that will reduce background app activity. MIUI 8 will be available on the Mi 2, 2S, 3, 4, 4C, 5, Max, and all Redmi and Mi Note phones, with a beta rolling out on June 1 and a developer ROM launching on June 17.

The Mi Max goes on sale in China on May 17. As it stands, and has been the case in the past, it doesn't look like the Mi Max will be available in the United States anytime soon.

What do you think of the Mi Max?

Disney Releases Official Apps For The Shanghai And Hong Kong Disneyland Resorts

Posted: 10 May 2016 04:16 AM PDT

disney-hong-kong

The only time I've been to Disneyland, it was lightly raining on a gloomy Paris day, but everything was made better when I saw the colorful castle from afar and spent the day giggling and hopping between attractions, playing with every toy I could see and buying a couple, eating a Mickey Mouse pancake, and then ending it by watching the parade and joining in the final dance. If the Winnie the Pooh photo waiting line was shorter and less filled with kids, it'd have been perfect.

Piper's Home Security System Gets IFTTT Integration And A Brand New Android App

Posted: 10 May 2016 02:31 AM PDT

piper-ifttt-ux

I love crowdfunding projects that work well, especially when the product delivers relatively on time and with most of the features working as promised. Piper's home monitoring / security system is one of these success stories, but despite the product's hardware being great, I have been letdown by its poorly designed software and that didn't change since September 2014 when I first reviewed it. But Piper has been growing up in the meantime, releasing a night vision hardware version, adding Life360 integration, and offering several accessories like sensors and lights, and now it's ready to graduate its software and automation too.

There aren't as many local newspapers as there used to be. You may have heard about this, and you may have heard that the Internet is part of the problem. Now Google is making a small change to throw local sources of news a bone.

Google News is introducing a new tag that will surface local news sources. The site identifies articles by observing where a publisher has written about in the past and comparing it to the location of a relevant story.
