Samsung Galaxy Note 6 rumored to launch in the US the week of August 15

Posted: 11 May 2016 02:45 PM PDT

Back in 2015, Samsung made the Galaxy Note 5 official on August 13. Now, according to one rumor, Samsung is looking to follow in its footsteps for the upcoming Galaxy Note 6.

Evan Blass (@evleaks) has taken to Twitter to claim that the Galaxy Note 6 is scheduled to launch the "week of August 15th." There isn't much else to go on here, save for the fact that Samsung launched the current generation Galaxy Note phablet around the same time last year, so it seems like it would be a safe bet. Still, keep that calendar marked in pencil for now.

As far as specifications go, all of that's still an unknown at this point. It's likely that the Galaxy Note 6 will feature a 2560×1440 display, and that it could host quite a bit of RAM under the hood, but all of that's expected from one of the year's flagships, especially from Samsung.

Without much information on the Galaxy Note 6, are you still looking forward to its arrival?

Microsoft Announces Sunrise Calendar Will Stop Working On August 31st

Posted: 11 May 2016 01:41 PM PDT

A wave of dread washed over fans of Sunrise Calendar when it was acquired my Microsoft in 2015, and indeed that dread was justified. Microsoft ended update support for Sunrise in late 2015, and now we know when the app will shut down for good. The big day is August 31st, so you'll have to find an alternative before then.

In Microsoft's previous posts on this, there was no firm date for the shutdown or details on what that would mean.

Instagram Announces New Icons, Makes App Redesign Official

Posted: 11 May 2016 01:09 PM PDT

Instagram is ditching its standard retro camera icon. In its place is a new hyper-colorful icon with a simpler representation of the camera. The company's other app icons are getting a similar makeover, and the simplified UI we first glimpsed a few weeks ago is official as well.

As with all things design, the new icon will be divisive. I actually rather like the simpler camera shape compared to the realistic design of the old one.

Introducing the second class of Launchpad Accelerator

Posted: 11 May 2016 12:28 PM PDT

Roy Glasberg, Global Lead, Launchpad Program & Accelerator

This week Launchpad Accelerator announces its second class, which includes 24 promising startups from around the world. While the number of accelerators is at an all-time high, we take a different approach with Launchpad Accelerator, a program that exclusively works with late-stage tech startups in emerging markets -- Brazil, Indonesia, India and Mexico.

See what it's like to participate in the Accelerator.

"We provide comprehensive mentorship that delivers results," says Jacob Greenshpan, one of Launchpad's lead mentors. "We start by running a 'patient diagnostic' to determine each startup's critical challenges, and then deploy precise mentorship, actionable solutions, and Google resources that enables the app to scale."

Class 2 kicks off June 13. The startups will descend on Google HQ for an intensive 2 week bootcamp. Under the tutelage of Google product teams and mentors from the global Launchpad network, they will receive intensive, targeted mentoring, equity-free funding, and more benefits during the 6-month program.

Google's "Scalerator" Drives Results for Alumni

What advice do Class 1 alumni give to the new intake? "Come to the accelerator with an open mind. You will be shocked to find how many things are going wrong in your app. Thankfully the mentors will help you implement better solutions," says Vinicius Heimbeck, Founder of Brazilian mobile game developer UpBeat Games.

UpBeat Games had more than 1,000% increase in daily app installations in Asia during the period of a feature, as well as a 200% overall increase in active users after following a long list of improvements Accelerator mentors suggested. "We made optimizations that led us to be featured in Google Play, which changed everything for us."

See Upbeat Games at the Accelerator in this video.

"Believe you can build a world class product. The mentors will push you to bet on yourself," says Amarendra Sahu, Nestaway Co-founder and Class 1 alumni. NestAway just closed a $30M Series C, one of the largest investment rounds in India this year.

"Your biggest enemy is not failure; it is the temptation to be ordinary. But the mentors will push you to build an extraordinary product and scale an extraordinary startup," says eFishery Co-founder and CEO Gibran Chuzaefah Amsi El Farizy, who was announced as one of the top 27 leaders in Indonesia's startup ecosystem, after participating in the Accelerator program.

Now you're back to finish watching, but where did you leave off?

YouTube appears to be testing a change that will make this easy to figure out. Before clicking on a video, a red bar appears at the bottom of the card that shows your previous progress.

Rumor: Android VR and standalone VR headset to launch at Google I/O

Posted: 11 May 2016 12:12 PM PDT

According to a rumor making the rounds today, Google will be launching a new virtual reality experience at Google I/O called Android VR, along with a standalone headset to go with it.

The rumor stems from Gizmodo and Engadget cofounder Peter Rojas, who says Google is working on a standalone headset called Android VR that will not be powered by a mobile phone or computer. Google is also said to be working on an entire Android-based VR ecosystem (think Android Wear, etc.) so it's unclear if the headset itself will be called Android VR or if Rojas is a little unclear on the details.

According to Rojas, the quality of the experience falls somewhere between the Gear VR and the Vive, both of which are considerably better than Google Cardboard. Android Police had a bit to add to today's rumor, saying they've heard a controller is also in the works, there have been references to Android VR in the latest Unreal Engine preview and VR support will go deep in Android N, possibly including VR-specific launchers and more.

With virtual reality being touted as the next big thing in technology, no one is surprised to see Google doing so much with the technology. This I/O is jam-packed full of VR sessions and we can't wait to see more.

Google now posting OTA updates for Nexus devices

Posted: 11 May 2016 11:41 AM PDT

We have some good news for Nexus owners who are into manually updating their devices today, as Google is now providing Nexus OTA updates along with factory images on the Android Developers website.

Previously, Google only offered full factory images that could be flashed using ADB, requiring a bit of developer knowledge and an unlocked bootloader. The OTA files provided by Google still require a bit of knowledge, but use ADB sideload which will not wipe your device and does not require an unlocked bootloader.

To take a look at the OTA images Google has provided, hit up the source link below.

A month later, that game had attracted over 10 million users around the world. Miitomo is more of a social network than a playable experience, but it does contain mini-games. The app has made Nintendo more money than expected.

Two "pure-game apps" are coming next, based on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem.

Google Translate adds Tap to Translate feature that works in other apps

Posted: 11 May 2016 11:12 AM PDT

While you navigate the internet, sometimes you just need to get something translated. And while Google Translate has worked to make that process easy in its own way over the years, mobile translation is getting even easier with the latest update.

Google has updated Translate to add a "Tap to Translate" feature, which will let you simply translate something on the go without having to jump in between apps. Once you copy a piece of text, you'll see an option to select the Google Translate button. Tapping that will translate whatever text you've got highlighted, right from within that app.

Once the text has been translated, you can even hear how the original text is spoken, or hit "New Translation" to type out a new phrase if you so wish, which can then be translated into the original text, which will let you reply in a different language.

If you want to use the new Tap to Translate feature, you'll need to be running an Android device running Jelly Bean 4.2 or higher. It works with all of the 103 different languages already supported by Google Translate.

That's a pretty impressive addition, and should make quick translations even easier for those that use the service.

HTC 10 for T-Mobile launches May 18 with a free Rapid Charger and Ice View Case for early adopters

Posted: 11 May 2016 10:13 AM PDT

The unlocked variant of the HTC 10 has been landing on buyers' doorsteps already, but for T-Mobile customers that have been eagerly awaiting its launch, the wait is finally almost over.

T-Mobile has officially announced that the latest flagship handset from HTC is launching on Wednesday, May 18. Pricing breaks down like this: $0 down and 24 monthly payments of $28.34. For the folks that just want to buy the handset at full retail, Magenta will be charging $679.99.

Unsurprisingly, T-Mobile is offering a bit of a bonus if you buy the HTC 10 between May 18 and May 24, throwing in a free Rapid Charge and a free Ice View Case for good measure. That'll save you $85, if those are two accessories you planned on buying.

Verizon and Sprint both announced their plans to launch the HTC 10 in late April. Unfortunately for AT&T subscribers, the HTC 10 won't be available from that carrier.

Instagram launches a new app icon and redesigned layout

Posted: 11 May 2016 07:41 AM PDT

Rumor had it that Instagram, the popular social network that hinges on photos and videos, was testing out a new redesign that would aim to put a bit more focus on the images users were trying to look at. Turns out the rumors were true, as Instagram has officially announced a brand new redesign to its Android and iOS apps.

Instagram says the new, simpler design should put more focus on the photos and videos, and accomplishes that without changing the way users navigate the app. On top of all that, Instagram is also updating the app icon, making it quite a bit more colorful.

Layout Boomerang new app icons

Instagram has updated the app icons for its other services, too, including Layout, Hyperlapse, and Boomerang.

Instagram says that within the social network over 80 million photos and videos are shared every single day, so a change in the way people look at content makes sense.

Google Camera v3.2 Prepares To Support Shooting In RAW+JPEG On Nexus Devices [APK Teardown]

Posted: 11 May 2016 05:53 AM PDT

Google's Camera app isn't the most advanced tool for taking photos. It completely avoids manual controls and generally lags behind OEMs for most major features. Where it's lacking in advanced features, the Camera app tries to make up for with a simple interface and clever techniques to intelligently deliver better photos without putting the burden on users. This means it works pretty well for simple point-and-shoot purposes, but skilled and professional photographers aren't likely to give it a second look.

Google Is Now Providing Nexus OTAs Alongside Factory Images, May 2016 Security Update Now Available

Samsung Marshmallow - 1

Don't you just hate it when Google releases a new Android update and you still have to wait days, if not weeks for it to pop up on your Nexus device?

Well now it looks like Google will officially provide links to download the OTA update itself alongside providing factory images for the same update. I still vividly remember the days when I had to wait for someone to figure out the URL for the update but now that this is no longer necessary, it should help those willing to install it manually but without having it wipe phone data.

Note that to install the update, you will still need to do it through adb sideload on your computer. Factory images and OTA images for the May 2016 security release are available in the source link below.

Motorola To Bring Multiple Moto X’s Again This Year

Posted: 10 May 2016 07:10 PM PDT

Motorola 2016

Last year Motorla brought multiple Moto X's to the table and according to a new rumour, the Lenovo run Motorola will be doing the same thing.  According to Evan Blass (aka @evleaks), one of the most reliable leaksters on the net, there will be two Moto X's this year!

The photo you see above was first leaked by HelloMotoHK and according to Mr Blass it depicts the two different Moto X models, the Vertex and Vector Thin.  The Vector Thin (right) is the higher end device sporting a 5.5″ QHD AMOLED display, Snapdragon 820, 32GB of internal storage, 3GB-4GB of RAM, a 16MP shooter with laser-assisted and phased detection autofocus and a 2600 mAh battery.  The Vertex (left) also sports a 5.5″ AMOLED display but only a 1080p offering.  Internally the Vertex packs a Snapdragon 625, 2GB-3GB of RAM, 16GB-32GB of internal storage, a 13MP camera with laser autofocus and OIS and a 3500 mAh battery.

As nice as those spec sheets are, these devices have an even more interesting feature.  According to Mr. Blass, the new Moto X's will follow in the footsteps of the G5 and offer modular attachments.   You see the dots on the bottom of the device that looks like a speaker grill?  Well apparently, those are actually pins that allow you to connect the modules to the device.  Some of those attachments include speakers, battery packs, camera grips, and even a pico projector!

I have to say, I'm pretty excited to see what the final product looks like!

Huawei GR5 Now Available In Canada

Posted: 10 May 2016 05:25 PM PDT

Huawei GR5

Huawei has officially released its first non-terrible smartphone here in Canada, the GR5 (no, I'm not saying the 6P is terrible, but it's not really Huawei's).  Here's a rundown of the specs:

  • 5.5″ 1080p display
  • Snapdragon 616
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of expandable storage
    • 3000 mAh battery
  • 13MP camera
  • 5MP front facing camera

The device, which is now available at both Rogers and Fido, will hopefully usher in a new era of Huawei devices available here in Canada.  Historically, Huawei has only sent their entry level devices to North America, devices that are just not fun to use.  But Huawei had committed to bringing some of their higher end stuff to North America and the GR5 definitely fits the bill.  No, it's not a flagship caliber phone but it's a solid mid ranger at a solid price.

The HTC 10, the company's latest Android flagship, began shipping to those in the United States at the beginning of the month. And now, for the lucky folks out there who have the handset in hand, there's a new software update making the rounds for US-based owners.

The update clocks in at 394MB, and its main focus is bringing in improvements for Wi-Fi performance and the camera. Improvements to the overall system stability are thrown in there for good measure.

Once the software has been downloaded and installed, HTC 10 owners will find themselves on version 1.53.617.5. If you haven't received the update just yet, you can head into the Settings app and select "System update" to see if you can pull it down manually.
